Kazkal
I bet we can't sign a FA Now It's not believed the deal is going to curtail the eforts to re-sign such regulars as Kevin Kaesviharn, Kenny Watson, Reggie Kelly, Tony Stewart, and Marcus Wilkins, or a decision to franchise or reach a long-term deal with defensive end Justin Smith.well duh. HoosierCat
A note from Curnutte...Club signs OL Kooistra to three-year dealMIAMI -- The Bengals this afternoon announced that they have signed offensive lineman Scott Kooistra to a three-year contract through 2009. Kooistra would have been eleigible to become an unrestricted free agent March 2.Kooistra has produced whenever he has had the chance to play, and he is a valuable part of a solid backup group of offensive linemen for the Bengals.Kooistra, who will be a fifth-year player in 2007, played in 15 games in 2006 with time on both offense and special teams. He has played in 54 games with one start since joining the Bengals as a seventh-round draft pick in 2003.FWIW: Good deal. Koo is a solid player and frankly I haven't seen Andrews show me he's better. Especially with Steiny apparently gone, this is a good move.
HairOnFire
Most of you guys would be even happier if the Bengals had signed a backup offensive lineman from another team. Admit it.

Bite me. I'm on record as saying Koo is a starting caliber RT. I repeat: good signing.Frankly, looking at the remaining Bengals FA...nope...no one I'd wanted back more left... Whur CHad At?
I think Kooistra was one of the most important players to re-sign. The guy is a stud!
Stripes
Good deal. We all know too well after this season how important offensive line depth is.
schroomytunes
Exactly, I am all for this resigning. #1 it didnt break the bank and he can play the G/T positions for us. and #2 it allows us to look primarily at the G/C positions in the draft, something that is usually found in the later rounds. We usually carry @9-10 OL every year, so right now we are looking at:C-Guichaic, WilkersonG-WilliamsT-Jones, Whitworth,Willie,Andrews,KooistraI do like our line options, even w/o Steinbach cause one of those Tackles can be inserted to replace him, but I would still like us to Draft a young Guard to provide depth. I think we should be able to land one of them in the middle rounds(4-6), after we address some defensive concerns.

Whitworth will probably start if/when Steinbach departs, but we'll still need at least one more body on the roster behind him.
TJJackson
FWIW: Good deal. Koo is a solid player and frankly I haven't seen Andrews show me he's better. Especially with Steiny apparently gone, this is a good move.Agreed and agreed, but I found myself wondering when we were playing 3 backup offensive linemen, why Kooistra STILL wasn't being played. They did play Stacey ahead of him.....and it wasn't just to get him reps....they needed those games....
jditty47
emergency situation in the 4th quarter of a close game, no one else id rather have in there at G or T. good signing, even though he is a goofy looking mother f****r. They did play Stacey ahead of him.....and it wasn't just to get him reps....they needed those games....Dunno, but I suspect it's a case of them still swooning -- rightly or wrongly -- over The Dancing Bear.Every coach has some attribute they salivate over. For some its speed, for others size, for others smarts, etc. In Marvin's case, I think he has a soft spot for "athletic" players, meaning those high-motor, high-potential, versatile types who just have to make great football players eventually because...well...because they're just such great athletes. So you get guys like Andrews and Pollack and Fanene, who get moved around to multiple positions, and sometimes even get starting jobs when they arguably haven't done anything to earn them.Meanwhile, guys who don't fit the "athlete" mold have a hard time staying on the field, even if they do produce. Shaun Smith being one example. Another is Ahmad Brooks; despite the mess at LB he couldn't stay in the game...because, according to Chucky B., he couldn't play on special teams. In short, if there's a choice between going with the best player at position X, or the best athlete who can play position X, the Bengals seems to lean heavily toward the latter option.
