AGrizzlyBaer
http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5854“It has to stop,” Palmer said hours after he heard the news. “If it doesn’t stop, we’re not going to have any fans left and I don’t blame them. It’s ridiculous. We can’t get through a month without getting a guy arrested. It happens on another team and they’re shocked and surprised to hear about it. With us, you hear about it and it doesn’t surprise you and you just shake your head and say, ‘Another one.’ ” “In the NFL, talent isn’t everything. It couldn’t have been any more evident than in that game Sunday,” Palmer said. “The best coaching wins and getting guys who are coachable. It doesn’t matter if you run a 4.4 (40-yard dash). What matters is if you run a 4.7 where and how you’re told to do it.“Look at that game. The only recognizable names that went to a Pro Bowl for New England are Tom Brady on offense and Richard Seymour on defense. Other than that, they’ve got average guys who do what they’re told and play together. Talent isn’t everything, and we’ve got talent but we’re sitting home for a reason and we have to do something about it.”
ShulaSteakhouse
I agree. More low risk, high reward players please. And no more tweeners on the defensive front. (Smith, Pollack)And make sure they are committed to football and love playing/competing, more than they do spending money, and driving around drunk and high. HairOnFire
Expressing your frustration is all well and good, but I'll argue that Jonathan Joseph played better against the Colts, Broncos, and Steelers than Carson Palmer did. Or isn't that relevant?
AMC
im happy hes frustrated.ditto....I want more players to speak up, to isolate bad karma and crush it.Expressing your frustration is all well and good, but I'll argue that Jonathan Joseph played better against the Colts, Broncos, and Steelers than Carson Palmer did. Or isn't that relevant? But I bet Carson wasn't cruisin' with a half-man/half-woman individual with weed in his possession either....Fact is JJoe is good but COULD BE BETTER with more focus and professionalism.Carson did what needed to be done, play on the field aside. This is about credibility and commitment of an entire team.

First, I may make jokes but when it comes right down to it I simply couldn't care less what Joseph's friends look like. Second, he was focused enough to be drafted in the 1st round and he played well enough to be named to several all-rookie teams. Does that count for nothing when his chosen profession involves playing football? Third, every player could be better if they did nothing but focus on football 24/7, but that's not realistic. In fact, while some players are wasting time smoking weed and playing video games others are wasting their time doing voice-over work for Disney cartoons. In fact, while some players are wasting time smoking weed and playing video games others are wasting their time doing voice-over work for Disney cartoons.I think people are concerned that they've seen this story before. Odell and Henry played great in '05 too, then the s**t hit the fan in the offseason with weed, booze, underage hookers, and trannies. OK, maybe not trannies. But still, we've seen this one way too recently, and I think people would like an offseason where they didn't have to cringe wondering how much of their roster will be in jail or suspended during the upcoming year. The other thing is that there's a pretty high correllation between people who do dumb crap like driving with weed in a car and people who skip meetings, don't practice hard, etc. Come on, have you never had a pothead for a coworker? How hard do those people work? Maybe JJ is the exception who works hard and parties hard. But it isn't what you want to see, especially now when these guys KNOW the spotlight is on them. ShulaSteakhouse
HOF - think you're taking the professionalism and commitment thing too literally. It was made public that Tory/Deltha and JJ often left the facilities early together, didn't take part in things with the rest of the team, and were generally slackers.Nice veteran leadership. Odell had a good rookie year too.

While the anecdotal connection between getting arrested and being a generally bad teammate who doesn't work hard or play well seems like it should be true, I would argue there's just as much evidence to the contrary. For every TJ there's a Chris Henry. I don't recall any stories about Caleb Miller getting arrested, but I don't see anybody wishing that we had a team full of mediocre, nice guy, nominally NFL talent players. The reason this is even a story is because pretty much everybody that we're talking about is a damn good player...Joseph, Henry, Odell. In fact, if we drafted so called high character players (whatever that means) for the next two years, I would argue we would have the same people demanding a coaching change because the team isn't trying hard enough to get the talent to win. HoosierCat
In fact, while some players are wasting time smoking weed and playing video games others are wasting their time doing voice-over work for Disney cartoons.Doing voice-overs for cartoons doesn't endanger your ability to stay on the field. Smoking weed does.If there is any one guy on this team who has an unquestioned right to complan about all the arrests, it's Carson. After all, this is the guy who spent the entire offseason undergoing a grueling rehab from a horrific injury. He could have called it a day. He could have taken an extra 8 or 10 months. But he worked like a banshee and made it back, however imperfectly, for the whole season. And at no time before, during or since has he ever done anything to endanger his ability to play. Thats not football 24/7, thats' just respecting yourself, your job, and your team. What does it say that nine guys on this squad apparently care so little about whether or not they are ultimately permitted to play? Is there no shame left? How do they go in to a locker room and faced guys who have battled to get back on the field, like Palmer, and guys who have played through pain and injury to stay on the field, like Willie Anderson--and say, yeah, I smoke weed, I drive drunk, so what if I get caught, so I get benched or suspended, so what?Frustrated? Yeah, I bet Carson's frustrated.

Kirkendall
im happy hes frustrated.ME TOO!It's nice to know that some guys on the team are just as frustrated as we are. The only thing that would be concerning after Palmer and Anderson speaking up today, is that it took speaking up to the media to get their points across where face-to-face, one-on-one interaction doesn't work. Either way, I'm happy we're hearing the same thing we're saying from members of the team. The footballiismo will speak! Carson should smoke pot!Whatever you do Spain, don't change. HairOnFire
The footballiismo will speak! Carson should smoke pot! Well probably not, but how funny is it that Palmer's first acting gig is as an animated version of himself? I wouldn't be surprised if the cartoon version was more lifelike than Palmer normally appears in interviews.[[[And now we endure a slight pause while I await the treasured rimshot.]]] Ba-Dink-Bonk!!!! Thank you. Thank you very much.

Smoking weed does. True, but I was responding to the speculation that regardless of how well Joseph played he could always be better if he completely devoted himself to football. But that ignores the fact that all season long he played better than any of us could have hoped, and much better than Palmer when it counted most. BTW, ask yourself which player caught Palmer's pass against the Steelers that should have secured the win that launched the Bengals into the playoffs? HINT: It's the same guy who caught a TD pass against the Broncos that due to a Chad Johnson penalty didn't count.

Why am I not surprised that you couldn't bring yourself to answer the question? Despite all of your whining and moaning the fact remains that Joseph was outstanding this season, as was Chris Henry, and without their play none of you would have the opportunity to complain about the Bengals disappointing 8-8 season. Instead, you'd be complaining about a 6-10 season. Or worse.
GapControl
why don`t we all just man up and say what we really mean? i know, we are all thinking, smoking weed makes a weak football player. Right? And going out and drinking late and driving cars makes weak football players. Now, it is time we at Bengalszone and the country as a whole admits that these two hobbies can be disruptive if not done in moderation. Partying for the sake of partying is disruptive. But partying to enjoy life, while doing so in moderation, has almost no ill effect whether it be with weed, alchohol, or both simultaneously. The key lies in how you go about your party. Don`t drive in a car. Don`t go to work. Don`t go on TV or go to practice. A party should be outside the realm of normal activity. If those are your normal activities, a party should logically occur at spaced intervals. All the while, when partying, you will consider your responsibilities and not damage your football team in anyway.
MinnyBengal
Maybe he would actually intercept some of the passes that he so adeptly bats down if he wasn't high all the time. It is starting to make some sense now at least. He should have had like 10 picks when Baltimore came in. Guess that's why he plays defense...
