Marvin's Enquirer interview

I, for one, have no interest in my head coach going into specifics about what the team wants to do in the draft or FA or scheme or whatever. While you and I want to know about what's happening with our team because we are fans, any real information he actually provides would only weaken the team's position as it goes about trying to target players or deal with its own problems. While it might be fun to read ML say something like "Adalius Thomas is a great player...we're going to do whatever it takes to sign him" that would be about the stupidest thing he could say. So, I continue to not look for any pearls of wisdom from these interviews because, unless Marv has a bad day, it ain't gonna happen. And it shouldn't.

Agreed. Marvin ain't unlearned.

However, from this I do note he didn't mention linebackers as a weakness the way he did with the Dline and DB's. So that might mean something come draft day. I've thought his yin & yang was between linebacker and DB's mainly because the Bengals rarely draft Dlineman on the first day.

Looks like a run of the mill Marvin interview, but thanks for the read. He seems to take pleasure from keeping his plans/expectations a secret (or he's just paranoid). He's still the man, however.

It's not reasonable to expect Marvin to lay out his plans in the media. Not only would it be unwise to show your hand too early, but there are so many things that Marvin has little control over it's reasonable to assume that he has as many plans as there are possible outcomes.

For example, the Bengals have fewer important free agents at risk of leaving this offseason, but the decisions about whether to tag Smith or Steinbach won't be made for another month or so, and only then after attempts to re-sign them have been exhausted. So what's Marvin going to say about the status of those players right now?

In addition, there are a staggering number of complimentary free agents that could be moving on. So it'll be interesting to see how committed the Bengals are to backup players like Caleb Miller when they know that allowing such players to move on gives the Bengals the freedom to remake the roster. And it can't be an accident that the Bengals drafted so many potential replacements last year for players that might be leaving. For example, Whitworth can step in for Steinbach, Rucker could soften the loss of Justin Smith, and Brooks and Nicholson are potential replacements for Johnson and Miller. To be sure, the Bengals may want to keep many of the incumbents if possible, but they've positioned themselves very well if new agreemensts can't be reached. Knowing that to be true what would anyone expect Marvin to say right now? Nothing, right? He's got to wait or something to happen before he can react.

Last, I was encouraged to see that Lewis is on the same page as most Bengal fans by saying that the Bengals are approaching the coming draft looking at upgrading the same two team units that most of us have targeted. Frankly, I know that some of us continue to chase the ever elusive TE siren, but everytime I play draft games using my own short lists I come up with scenarios that result in secondary or defensive line positions being addressed with the two highest draft picks.

Ehhh?

I think that was Curnutte's note, not Marvin's comment. In other words:

We will continue to develop our young talent on defense and supplement where we are on offense. We've got a little bit of age some places on defense (line, cornerback)..

Curnutte is adding line and cornerback. That's total speculation on my part, but when you generally add parenthesis like that, it's not the direct comment of the interviewee.

Yeah, I agree. I don't hold it against Marvin when he hides his hand under the table every time the media is nearby. He has plenty of logical reasons for it, and as fans we shouldn't bitch. I'm just noting that he'd probably still do so even when obviously unecessary just because he enjoys it.

Yup,What coach goes in to great detail in his plans?

PS I enjoy marvins interveiws :P

A: We will continue to develop our young talent on defense and supplement where we are on offense. We've got a little bit of age some places on defense (line, cornerback).

We've got to make sure we get some young players there and, frankly, players who play more productive... At first made it sound like a age thing but turned it to no they just suck ;)

A: That's why you saved that one for last.

:sure:

Exactly. At this point we don't know who amog the potential FAs will and won't be a FA come March. How much cap space thre is depends on how the bengals' own negotiations with their potential FAs goes. I haven't seen calculations for the RFA tenders or the franchise/transition tags yet. The deadling for juniors to enter the draft was just 2 days ago and the paperwork there is still in the mill. At this point, everything is as clear as smoke.
