Spor_tees Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 I have to say one of the most frustrating things about the Bengal's defensive scheme is, it changes every week. The Bengals adjust their defense every week to suit the team they are playing instead of setting up a strong defense that opposing teams have to adjust THEIR offense to try and break. Marvin's defenses in Baltimore was just that, a defense the Offensive Coordinators had to game plan against instead of vice versa. This just might be the major pitfall this entire year. The players just aren't getting into any kind or rhythm each week because they have to learn new formations, responsibilities, and play calls for every different offense they play against instead of going with what works and making the offense adjust.Key in point will be next week against the Broncos. The Broncos are a totally different type of offense than the Colts where they run the ball well and have a rookie QB. Question is, will the defense be a better fit to the game plan next week than they were this week? I certainly hope so. Quote
Stripes Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Yes, I think the defense will be in a much better position next week. They're stopping the run very well, and against the Broncos that will be critical. Cutler will not be as technically sound as Manning was tonight, and I fully expect a good defensive game. Offensively, the Colts are built perfectly to screw our defense... The Broncos are on the other end of the spectrum in terms of matchups IMO. Quote
WhoDey93285 Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 We'll bounce back next week, I think. Our Run D is looking pretty good, and I don't think Cutler is good enough to pick us apart like Manning did. I still fully expect us to make the playoffs. But, is our D good enough for us to go anywhere once we get there? Probably not. Quote

CBin2k7 Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 I have a feeling the Broncos will give the Bengals D some serious problems. They run alot of play action and get Cutler out on the edge. They have two tight ends who are threats to catch the ball, and they also can go 3/4 wide and be pretty effective out of those sets. The Bengals have a habit of turning number 3 receivers into superstars so expect David Kircus or Brandon Marshall to play a huge role in the game. Quote
HairOnFire Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 MY biggest complaint about tonight's defensive showing was the lack of aggression built into the gameplan. We're all used to the defensive ends constantly mush rushing by now, but they also backed off the LB's and the safeties so that everything given up was fairly short and contained. Then when you factor in the corners playing a soft zone all night long or giving 8 yard cushions in rare man to man situations.....nobody had a chance to make a positive play. At best they kept the play infront of them and made the tackle. Quote

I'm guessing that nobody was impressed by the Bengals defensive scheme...or their offensive scheme for that matter. But the point that I was attempting to make has less to do with where players line up and more to do with how the schemes robbed the Bengals of the aggression and emotion that all teams need. Frankly, the idea that players should be coldly professional is an inaccurate stereotype. On both sides of the ball they need the opportunity to dictate the action, physically blow a play up, and hopefully produce big plays that build momentum. Neither scheme, offensive or defensive, allowed the Bengals to do that and as a result the Bengal players seemed to go into an emotional shell almost from the start. Whenever the camera paused on a Bengal player, even when the score was close or tied, it focused on a glazed look lacking energy, urgency, or even anger. Quote

rwjcgc Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Last night wasn't anything new, the only difference was the lack of interception in the end zone getting the team out of trouble. The total and complete lack of a pass rush is the downfall of the defense. There is noone on the defensive line causing so much as a ripple when they play the top tier teams.Last night Peko looked like a lap dog nipping at Jeff Saturday's heels. He needs a haircutand some serious coaching on how to move upfield and cause some disruption. The rest weren't much better. How good would Krumrie (sp?) look on this line? Quote

He may be a rook, but he has the ability to shred us. We need to keep constant pressure. I'd like to see allot of Dexter and K2 in the backfield.Jumpy and Bustin need to keep contain on him as well. Cutler is faster than he looks, and the broncos love to roll their qb's out after the play fake. Quote
buck3y3d Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 We should have blitzed from the secondary. I don't see the point in letting them throw underneath all day. Ok, so they score on 10 plays instead of 5, well with a rush at least we have a chance at a turnover. We basically played prevent while losing. Absolutely genius. I love this coordinator. All I want is a blitz. I don't care if it's one extra guy. That is all I ask. Quote
