Henry to play with Chatman on IR.

For the second straight Friday the Bengals put a wide receiver on season-ending injured reserve when Antonio Chatman was lost for the year and activated Chris Henry to take his place on the 53-man roster.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said Henry is going to play Sunday against the Falcons with Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh his only other healthy veterans. Chatman and Tab Perry (hip) are out for the year and Kelley Washington (hamstring) is out for the second straight game.

Lewis said rookie defensive back Ethan Kilmer, a wide receiver at Penn State, has been taking snaps at wideout for the past two weeks.

But there are no indications the Bengals are going to sign Peter Warrick before a game in which he couldn’t have played even if he’d joined the club Wednesday. Reached after the Bengals practiced Friday, Drew Rosenhaus, Warrick's agent, said the club told him Thursday night they are holding off at the moment.

"They said they're going a week at a time with Peter," Rosenhaus said. "Peter is going to stay in shape and we hope we get that opportunity."

The Bengals also lose another receiver if they again make rookie Reggie McNeal the third quarterback for the third straight week. Glenn Holt, a free agent rookie from Kentucky looks like he’ll be suited up for the second straight game after coming off the practice squad.

Running back Chris Perry can also line up some at wide receiver.

Chatman, who came over from Green Bay in free agency, has never been right since he pulled a muscle in his groin/abdominal area on the first weekend of training camp. He hardly ever practiced and played in one preseasn game before making his regular season Bengals debut in Week 4 against the Patriots.

He caught a big third-down pass last week before finishing the year with just three catches for 22 yards.

But he also returned punts and kicks, duties that appear now fall to Keiwan Ratliff and Kenny Watson, respectively.

It will be awesome to see Henry back in action sunday!

Who Dey!!!

It's great to have Henry back but we still need another receiver. T.J. has had some problems staying healthy in the past, Chad is also banged up and there is still a possibilty that Henry could face another suspension. The rest of the receivers on the roster are very, very questionable. Glen Holt has played exactly a handful of special teams snaps for the Bengals, Reggie McNeal is taking most of his practice snaps at QB (which I originally thought was a good move, before the injuries) and the only other option right now, considering KW'ss injuries is also our 3rd string safety who didn't even start at WR at Penn State last year. If not Warrick I would like to see Cincinnati sign someone who could not only be a quality 4th receiver but also a decent return man. I am not impressed with Ratliff or Watson in the return game. Tab Perry's loss has been a HUGE blow. At this point, I think it's almost a must to sign Warrick, as he gives you something (at least more than we currently have) in both areas, even if it's not the old "FSU" Warrick, and people forget he was the Bengals best run-blocking receiver, too.

On the other hand, Perry looked decent at receiver last week, so that might be worth a shot. The bad news is that, he is also banged up. I hope that T.J. doesn't happen to miss any time during another Henry suspension (which looks more and more like it might happen). We'd be SCREWED! Time to get PW reaclimated with the offense.

Man I know that I did some bashing of CHenry for all the things he did this offseason, but I swear it feels DAMN good to have him back...I think that I would take PWarrick back right now also, if we have too...all the weapons are finally on the field at the same time, I hope we beat the s**t out of Atlanta...passes everywhere...

If this doesn't create playing time for Reggie McNeil then nothing will. He already filling the role of emergency QB, he's the most explosive player that could be inserted into the return roles, and adding him as the last WR off the bench makes activating him now even more feasible.

If he isn't activated now that Chatman has been shelved then somebody needs to explain why NcNeil was drafted in the first place.

I do not think that McNeal had experience in college catching punt and returning kicks so you do not want to just throw him out there. Yeah, I agree he is most definitely the most explosive, fastest and most gifted athlete on the roster to do this, but I for one, would rather take the Pissburgh approach and not-put-anyone-back-there-so-that-we-don't-turn-the-ball-over approach to punt returns than have McNeal back there and fumble a kick and give up points.

Not a knock on McNeal, just a thought...

Give him a year to develop in practice, then insert him in the lineup.

what happened to bennie brazel

Isn't he on IR due to pre-season injuries?

Yep.

I think McNeal will be the 4th guy in K-dub's place. We simply have nobody else left to put there. Having Henry back is great though... While D-Fall is worrying about Fatburger, Henry will be in the midst of a 100 game.

Henry coming back will make a huge difference. Brat loves to run three reciever sets, and now he can put perry in the backfield more on passing situations.

McNeal is a great athlete, but i think asking him to contribute at WR this early in his career may be asking a bit too much. I can't believe it, but I'd be more comfortable if they just resigned P-dub

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that McNeal can't get playing time at other positions if he's listed as the third QB. I believe there is some kind of regulation prohibiting people listed as quarterbacks playing other positions. Am I on crack?

that doesnt make sense cuz how many times has Mike Vrabel or even Warren Sapp lined up as an eligible receiver at TE in teh past?

Also as stated, Seneca Wallace for Seattle has played at WR as Hasselback's backup (QB2)

My understanding of the rule has nothing to do with "playing other positions". The rule is more related to the 3rd string QB designation. As I understand it, teams are permitted to dress 45 guys for each game, plus one additional guy who is designated as the 3rd string QB ("emergency QB"). Because this is an 'extra guy', if you use him (plays at any position), the 1st and 2nd string QBs are no longer permitted to play (or at least until the 4th quarter or something like that). Not sure of the specifics, but I am sure that it's a matter of this 'extra player' designation and that if he enters the game, the other two QBs suffer in terms of when/if they are permitted to play.

McNeal wouldn't have to be designated as an emergency QB if he played an actual position like PR/KR. You'd be giving him a role, and filling a hole, that would allow the Bengals to actually use his speed and quickness for something more than simple curiosity value.
