I know "ever" is a long time... but it is a different college football world out there than it was 50 years ago. There is more parity than ever before. However, the Buckeye's are dominating like it was the good old days.

There was a lot made of the defense returning only 2 starters... and yet, we are #1 in scoring defense, holding opponents to only 8.3 pts/game. We also are 2nd in the nation in scorind differential (26.6 pts/game), trailing only West Virginia (28.2) whose strength of schedule is currently ranked 89th to the Buckeye's 7th.

The closest game we have played was @ 5th ranked Texas winning by 17. We have won all our other games by 3 TD's or more. There is also the possibility that if Texas continues to win, we beat Michigan, and win the national championship that we will beat 3 teams that were ranked #2 when we played them, and would all finish ranked 2, 3, and 4.

I'm not sure if such a thing has ever happened in college football history... but if it does, it would have to go down as one of the most dominating single seasons in history.

I haven't been able to get really excited about any Ohio State games this year (except the Texas game) just because I haven't been worried in the least that the games would even be close. I've focused all my energy on the Bengals... but the more I see, the more I realize that this team might be chasing history. Perhaps we'll eventually finish #1 on one of those stupid ESPN "who's #1" shows.

No. This team is great, and it's the best team in the nation this year, but no way best ever. I'd argue some of our one loss teams with huge star power (97 Eddie George, David Boston, Joe Germaine) was better.

If they can continue and win the National Title in dominating style than I may start to think they are the best but I have to agree with boomer that some of the teams that Cooper had that just could not win against UM were better than this team. As of right now even the Krenzel lead team instilled more confidence in me than this one, that PSU game scared the hell out of me untill the last 3 minutes.

The Krenzel team scared the hell out of me almost every single game. Remember the Purdue game?

Didn't the '97 team lose 3 games? :P

The '96 team would've been great if not for the Michigan loss. Can't consider a team one of our greatest if they can't beat our biggest rival. That was a great game against Arizona State though.

If this team can finish what they've started I might consider them the best, but there's still football to be played.

They have to beat one of the best Michigan teams in a long time before they can be given any special recognition.

If they do get through it all with a championship, then I'd say it's a top 3 Buckeye team easily. The scoring margin isn't of much interest to me though... some of the best Buckeye teams ever didn't quite do that. Woody Hayes just didn't coach that style of football.

This team'll be hard to top though. Massive wins throughout the season, undefeated, Heisman winner at QB, best defense since 2002, etc...

IMHO the best OSU team was the Woody Hayes coached 1970 NCAA Champs who finished with a 9-1 record. Of course most members around here weren't even born yet, so they have no way of knowing much about that team.

Scoring margin wouldn't interest me either, Tressel doesn't run up the score like a mack brown does.

maybe it was 95 B24, I'm talkinga bout the team who lost to MSU while ranked #1(I think it was 97). I know it had Eddie George(year he won the heisman I think)

Depends on how you want to rate the teams actually. I can't see OSU beating the #2 team three times, winning the Championship and doing it all with the great stats they've put up and still not be considered great. What's the weak link here that makes people want to shy away from giving them such a lofty place in our personal histories? If they had a weak schedule sure... but they don't. If they were winning, but only by close margins, sure... but they've been dominant in most games they've played. Is it, perhaps, that it's hard to be emotional about a team that seems like a sure bet every week? There's still football to be played but if they do come through and win every game, I don't see how they can not be considered one of the all time great Buckeye teams.

Then again, I'm smart enough to know that I'm not old enough to be making these sorts of judgements myself. I will defer to the Old-Timer's take on what exactly this team is made of when compared to its tremendous past.

Buckeyes Forever.

That's what I'm getting at though, this team seems to be less exciting because they are blowing everyone away. THe competition has hardly stepped up at all. It's actually kind of hard to get excited about games when your best competition was blown out 24-7. If this Buckeyes team goes all the way and blows everyone out doing it, I think they will be less memorable than older teams. That really sucks too, to be so good that you fail to leave an impression. They aren't really trying to run up the scores in their games and yet they have out scored their competition 323 to 66!

Including their last 88 points have been unanswered!

By the way... the '95 team was not our best team ever. We weren't even ranked #1 in the country that year. Had we gone undefeated we would have had a share of the national championship... but we lost to Michigan. You can't lose the biggest game of the season and think you are the best team in Buckeye history.

You are defined by your big games. The jury is still out on the greatness of this year's team, because we haven't played Michigan or the National Championship yet... but if we win beat Michigan convincingly, and win the National Championship, beating 3 teams in the top 5 on our way to doing it... well, you're going to have a hard time convinicing me this isn't the most dominiant team in OSU history.

I did a little research when I heard the last time Ohio State and Michigan were ranked #1 and #2. It was 1973. As I was looking to see the results between OSU?Bitchigan, I discovered that this tidbit of information. The Buckeyes had a scoring diffential of 413 to 64! They shut out 4 teams including 3 in a row and finished with a 10-0-1 record. The tie, 10-10 against Michigan. The Big Ten sent the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl as they had the same conferance record as Michigan because they were considered the better team and proved the right with a 42-21 victory over USC. This is the best Buckeye Team ever!

Impressive, but if this year's team beats the Wolverines and takes the championship, I think we'll have a new all time best. We may not have a better scoring differential, but that is not really a big deal, Tressel does not run up scores. Victory over Michigan will trump the tie.

Incredibly impressive. Those stats are hard to deny. However... it looks as though we played only 2 ranked teams... and beat only 1 of them. (I could be wrong... but you only listed Michigan and USC as being ranked, and we tied Michigan).

As it stands this year, we will face at least 3... maybe 4 ranked opponents if either Iowa or Penn State can manage to get back into the rankings (which seems likely to me).

The shut-outs indicate that it's the best defense in OSU history... but right now we have the best scoring defense in college football, and that is not likely to change against Illinois or Northwestern. Add to that the Heisman winner, and probably the most complete offense in college football and you have by far the best team in college football... not even close.

If we continue winning the way we have the last 2 weeks, and dominate Michigan and the Nat Championship, it will be one of the most impressive runs in college football history... let alone Ohio State history. But for now... I'll give you the '73 season.
