Bengals/Panthers game after thoughts

Absolutely critical win in the big picture, no doubt. A few random thoughts cluttering my head:

1. Enormous game for the O-line, and one they needed. If they can build on that, I like this team's chances a lot more than I did one week ago.

2. Chad's maturity this year must be applauded. He has still contributed enormous catches even while teams kill themselves to take him away. That catch was the 4th and 1, with my heart in my throat, was a nice reminder why he is an All-Pro.

3. I heartily welcome the TEs back to the pass offense. That is how you make teams pay for taking away the WRs.

4. Defense gets an extra gold star. Progress being made, definitely. Foster was not a factor, and they actually did a decent job containing Steve Smith, all his yards aside. Good consistent pressure on Delhomme, too. I am still processing the fact that Smith and Geathers may each go double digits in sacks this year.

5. As noted in the Brooks thread, he needs to be a fixture in the middle from here on out.

6. Jon Joseph is going to be a stud. Hell, he is that now. That pass break-up on Keyshawn in the 4th quarter is not a play I am used to this team making over the years.

7. Madieu Williams is at an all-pro level right now. Getting D-Jax back is huge, as they can get back to working together.

8. D-Jax's return moves KK back to dime back, where he is actually pretty damn deadly.

Welcome back to Henry next week, got Perry's first game action under his belt, won a game where all phases of the team pitched in, a lot to be happy about. A lot.

Thoughts from the rest of you?

I think it's worth noting that the defense kept playing even though it took the offense forever and a day to get going. They could have easily have thrown in the towel after that 3rd or 4th straight 3-and-out -- and didn't.

This team still has a lot of work to do, but they kept shoveling today, and it paid off.

Great game, first off. Gotta give credit to the entire coaching staff for making some great adjustments at halftime. Held Carolina scoreless the entire second half. I loved Chuck's aggressiveness today, and i saw a lot today I hadn't seen before(constantly blitzing the center, run blitzing, d line penetration, even some formations)

Good times

Complete grinder of a game today, and the Bengals stepped up and got it done. :sure:

I think this is proof that Brat's system can utilize the TE just fine... but we;ve often just had far too many great WR weapons for Palmer to need to look in that direction. But without Tab Perry, Kelly Washington, Chris Henry, as well as Chad and Chatman both struggling through the game with injuries... well, TE's quickly become important.

Once we get Henry back, and a few more healthy guys, I expect TE to quickly return to its deemphasized role in this offense.

1. Tory played well. I'll hold off on the "start Joseph" chatter for a little while. :P

2. The offensive line did the job in the second half, and the results were clear. The offense is back, finally.

3. Ahmad Brooks is a freakin' stud.

4. Madieu Williams is a freakin' stud.

5. Bratkowski owes me a new pair of underwear.

6. The Falcons are screwed.

James did play well. The coverage he had on Smith in the Panthers last drive for the 23 yard catch was tight. James was step for step with Smith down the sideline and it took a really remarkable adjustment mid air by Smith to make the grab. Joseph made a couple big time plays but it looked like he was trailing receivers more this game than any other. Hopefully the comp James faces for PT will get the most of out of him and what's left in him is enough down the stretch to contribute whether starting or not.
