We're probably thinner at DE now. Besides, Jumpy showed how that doesn't generally work.My question is, why isn't Sam living up to expectations? Here is a hint, Sam is an individual that causes teams to run away from him and takes up blocker so line backers and safety can run in space and make tackles one on one. He did this well the 1st 2 games when we had linebackers and a real ss. Now our backer/safety play has fallen off and thus an increase in rushing yards. Its not his fault, its that we have 2 linebackers that weigh 220 and cant get off blocks, scrape properly or tackle.
ArmyBengal
I don't really see this as an option... Although anything should at least be thought out after last weeks efforts...WHODEY !!!

We all new after KK started, opposing QB's would start looking better. Losing David Pollack has really hurt hasn't it? Run defense died after he got hurt.I don't know if he'll ever play again, but clearly the Bengals are feeling the pain from losing him and Dexter.ML is looking like a genius though in drafting extra quality LB's in AJ and Brooks. The way things are going, one or the other might be starting by mid November.

He didn't start against KC... and didn't play much at all, recording no stats of any kind. Then he was injured incredibly early on against Cleveland. What hurt our run defense was losing Jeanty and Jackson. We get them back, we start filling the gaps again like we did @ KC.
ShulaSteakhouse
Every year they change DT's, every year the same defensive results.I don't why you guys think these LB's are so great - including Brian Simmons. This defense is a gap scheme that forces backs to re-direct, cut back or get collapsed upon - it's up to the LB's to fill the gap and make the tackle when that happens - they rarely do. The DE's suck here too - they do nothing - and don't give me this "Justin Smith is a hustler" B.S. either - he's just as bad getting burnt in the backfield, not holding contain - then catching back up 5-10 yards downfield. I don't even know if he listens to coaches, or is so bad that they just let him do what he does best, and over-compensate for his weakenesses with strength and speed. I honestly have had enough of Smith. Couldn't even beat a rookie tackle last week. Yeah he's a stud.I swear to god I see guys like Thorton, Peko, Geathers and Smith making more tackles on RB's downfield than I do LB's.They can win with what they have due to the over-all mix of talent, and will just have to live with their weakenesses. But when the Bengals' are able to get a stud LB or two in the fold here, and a real DE, things will change vs the running game. Look at what a guy like Urlacher did for Chicago, Lewis for Baltimore, Tatupalua for Seattle, Merriman for SD, etc.., etc.., The problem on defense and the 0-line is talent. But no one ever wants to criticize the LB's or 0-line in this town - for some odd reason they're untouchable. It's as bad as someone daring to criticize the loaf of poo that is Ken Griffey Jr. or the slack-jawed Adam Dunn on the Reds.</rant over>
derekshank
Yeah yeah yeah Shula. We all know what you think. If the situation was really as bad as you make it seem we'd be back in the 2-14 days. Our O-line doesn't suck, Levi Jones and Richie Braham are not over-rated. Justin Smith doesn't suck... and although most the LB's are young and inexperienced (and injured)... they're still very talented and will only get better.Your pessimism that leads you to ignore the talent on this team that virtually the whole world acknowledges has gone past being uninformed... it is now tired and aggravating.</rant over>
Kazkal
Well could be used as DE on running downs then go in on passing downs, but reason why bring it up because more then likely will be getting 1st or 2nd rnd DE next year.I diden't want him to be starter just a protect o_O.....But no one ever wants to criticize the LB's or 0-line in this town - for some odd reason they're untouchable. This years LB's I am very unhappy with =/ but if things work out and odell cleans up I like how corps would look next year with Odell-Brooks & pollack
Kazkal
Ravens 270-251-240Falcons 236-250-245Panthers 231-240-240 (davis sure will put on more weight sense he was drafted as a safety)Colts all sub 235 but their defense is still questionable + their line > our linejaguars 244-235-245 (best tackles in the nfl)Eagles 240-262-230Seahawks 230-238-235Bucs 225-225-235250-232-243The weights of some best LB corps I thought in football...Only teams with light backers seem to also have great Dline...but most teams seem be going for bigger backers.so bengals have 2nd lightest starting LB corps in the nfl only second to bucs who have a great line and scheme. HoosierCat
I was just thinking mybe we could try devolope him as a DT?They already are. The Bengals rotated Fanene inside on a regular basis last season. I think they see him in that DE/DT swing role Marvin & Co. seem to love so much -- the one formerly occupied by Carl Plowed and now by B-rob -- versus strictly a DT, tho.Bottom line is, if you want to improve he DT position you can do one of two things: chase and sign a top-tier DT or two in FA, or spend some high draft picks on young prospects. The Bengals, as we know, don't chase top-tier FAs (at least outside their own organization), and the last time we used a day 1 pick on a DT was Big Daddy.
