The Pollack Injury Saga

Hobson...

But the most serious injury happened to Pollack, who suffered "a significant neck injury," which raised the possibility he could be lost for the season. Pollack left the field on a stretcher giving the thumbs-up. He could move his extremities and was conscious, and was taken to University Hospital after running back Reuben Droughns collided with him during a 10-yard run on the Browns' second offensive snap. He's expected to spend the night there.

"Everything is working. Everything is stabilized," Lewis said. "It put a little damper on it for me and the guys."

:( Well, at least we have a spot for Odell. Get well soon & all, David.

Can't fault Pollack for the effort but I hope the rest of the LBs and the secondary get some advice on keeping their hat up when they go for a big hit. The big hit is a sight to see but a drive tackle through the midesection or lower is more effective.

If it is a cracked neck, Pollack is done for at least the year. Sure looked like a stinger but we'll see and hope for the best. Jeanty has come along and will get the job done for the most part. He's no Pollack tools wise though. It's high time the Bengals get either Ahmad Brooks or AJ focusing on strong side play.

Really can't believe he went in with his head that low...after watching that replay I was wondering if he was trying to get hurt on purpose. I'm sure the coaches, after showing him their sentiment for him getting hurt, will ask him what the f**k he's doing making a tackle like that. It's not like he was caught in an odd situation or angle, he did it himself. Damn, I'd really like to see him in there on a regular basis.

Pollack is snake bit, just can't stay on the field. Hopefully he'll be safe and can play soon.

Credit Marvin for building a very deep linebacker group. Jenty has played well and he was a nobody last year. Odell will be back after two more games. Just hope Pollack will recover and be able to chase his dream; same for the Bengals.

Poor guy :( loves the game so much has so much energy and just bad fing luck.Fingers are crossed he isen't ird.

Agreed, since the injury wasnt to chris perry it was just bad luck. Good thing Pollack didnt go to michigan or he'd be a bust by now.

I want to see some more of Ahmad Brooks. I think they could plug him in for a series or two to back up Jeanty.

Brooks isnt close to ready. I dont think we can expect much of him until late this season at best. I expect to see a lot of Jeanty, and some Caleb Miller. This will probly accelerate Thurmans return to the lineup once he gets back from suspension if its really as bad as Hobson says.

guys that are calling for brooks, nicholson and jeanty are wrong. You already know who the 3 will be: it'll be Simmons, Thurman, and L. Johnson. Jeanty should see some PT, but this is our 3. Pollack will be a big loss if out for the season, because of his versitility at the OLB position and his pass rush abilitiy. Simmons is looking like a new man, maybe we leave him at middle and put O dog on the right side....

This from Brad Johansen's blog over on bengals.com:

Get Well David

I'm praying for David Pollack. He needs your prayers, too. According to friends and family the Bengals No. 1 draft pick in '05 has a fractured C-6 vertebrae or a broken neck. He might be done for the year. He might be done playing football. He is sitting up, laughing and joking and eating and has no signs of paralysis.

If you're lucky in this business, a bunch of the people you have to cover become friends. David is one of them. His Empower foundation that has just gotten off the ground is about making the lives of children in our area better. He wants to be a difference-maker. On the field, he seems to have nothing but roadblocks to that end. A holdout cost him his first camp, then a knee injury, then a foot injury, then a hamstring problem. Now this.

His character has allowed him to overcome it all so far. My prayer is his healing will be complete, and he'll get to be the difference-maker he's always wanted to be.

Makes the Bengals' depth chart seem pretty insignificant.

Pollack is done for the year...

Article off Cincinnati.com

David Pollack will be placed on the injured reserve list, which ends his season as a player, after breaking his neck during the Bengals game Sunday.

The second-year linebacker suffered a severe neck trauma when he hit Browns running back Reuben Droughns in the shoulder pad with the top of his helmet early in the first quarter.

Center Rich Braham (deep left knee bruise) and strong safety Dexter Jackson (right ankle sprain) will miss the game Sunday at Pittsburgh but are likely to return later in the season.

Until then, second-year lineman Eric Ghiaciuc will start at center. And Kevin Kaesviharn will join Madieu Williams as the Bengals safeties.

The Steelers will play at Jacksonville tonight.

Pollack spent the night at University Hospital.

Earlier today, Pollack’s wife, Lindsey Pollack, posted an e-mail on Cincinnati.Com’s Bengals blog.

She writes:

“I first want to thank everyone for all of your thoughts and prayers for Davey. It means so much to both of us to know that you are thinking of him.

“I know you are all probably hearing all sorts of things. We have been overwhelmed with phone calls, text messages and e-mails, so I apologize for not getting back to some of you sooner. I just wanted to give everyone a brief update before I head back to the hospital.

“Davey did break his neck. I hate how that sounds, though. He fractured his C-6, for those of you who know what that is, but he is so blessed to have feeling everywhere! The doctors have put him in a Halo brace to stabilize him. He is able to move from the chest down, so he can sit up (and) eat, walk, etc. Right now we are just in a waiting period.

“We won't know for a little bit whether surgery has to be an option or not. We are hopeful that he won't have to have surgery and that he will be able to wear the brace and the bone repair itself. We just have to wait and see how his neck responds to the Halo for the next week or so.

“I wish I had more to tell, but that is where we are now. We are hoping he can come home in the next couple of days.

“On a lighter note... Davey is in wonderful spirits! He is joking with all the nurses and keeping everyone laughing still. He has a wonderful perspective on things and he has just been solid! He amazes me more each and every day! Please continue to say your prayers please!

“He will be at University Hospital at least until tonight. I will be there all day, so I won't be able to respond to emails. I will continue to keep you updated as I am able! We love you all so much and are so blessed to have your friendship and support!

“We both know that God's hand is in this and He has a great plan than either of us know. We are both leaning on Him right now to guide us through this time and our decisions. He has blessed us with each and every one of you in our lives and for that we are grateful. Love, Lindsey”

Makes the Bengals' depth chart seem pretty insignificant.

Serious injuries tend to have that effect, don't they? That said, I think Johansen's news is, on the whole, good. Certainly, losing him stinks for the team, and if the injury forces him to call it a career, that stinks, too. But even in that worst-case scenario he's still walking and talking and otherwise just fine, and he would leave with several million dollars in the bank -- a springboard into the rest of your life that a lot of young men and women would love to have.

Obviously, I hope he comes back strong. But if he doesn't, well, there have been much, much worse ends to careers in the NFL.
