This ranking is interesting...

Their formula includes record vs quality opponents which is defined as a team over .500. So everyone that is 1-0 is 0-0 vs quality oponents so far and anyone who has a loss is 0-1 and 0-1 vs quality oponents. :P

I think that that is pretty funny. Obviously meaningless this early in the season.

Maybe it's because I'm a numbers guy, but I've always liked the CHFF statistics. The quality wins quotient doesn't usually begin to mean anything until week 4 or 5. It's actually only after week three that any team can claim a quality win, so right now they are meaningless, just like all the other statistics.

I gotta say that I believe all of these rankings having Indy so high are wrong.

Indy has absolutely no running game, and it is all about Peyton connecting with his WRs. One hit wonder, and they will get exposed because of it. Just wait and see.

Funny, I was gonna mention that I thought it was a toss-up between Jax and Indy in another thread. One game does not a season make but they had no running game vs. the Giants, Eli actually put up better numbers than Peyton, and Tiki ran at will.

Me, too. But I must say that the CHFF guys are starting to tie themselves into the same stat knots as the football outsiders guys -- this quotient, that value, some bloody index. Quality wins was nice, simple, and reasonably reliable once you got the season going a few weeks.

I figured we'd be in the 3-4 range. If/when we demolish the Browns next week, we might have a 1 vs. 2 matchup (though it's much less meaningful than the college rankings obviously).

Anybody read the Eisen article @ nfl.com. Some funny sh!t. :lmao:

"That said, fresh off a season-opening Striped Cat pasting of the Kansas City Chiefs and Trent Green (wonder what Bengals Nation thinks of that "late" hit to knock out the other team's starting quarterback?) the folks in the Queen City are already feeling their oats."

"Last I checked, there won't be an NBC pregame show covering the raising of the AFC North division championship banner this Sunday."

Did anyone happen to be listening to SPort's Bash with Erik Kuselias last night when he went over ESPN's power rankings? He said if he had been in that meeting, he would have been booing them.

He said... these are week 1 rankings, not 2005 season rankings. So, you can't have Seattle in your top 5 because they barely escaped with their lives from Detriot. You can't have Indy in your top 5 because they couldn't run and couldn't stop the run. You can't have Pittsburgh in your top 5, because they were losing in the 4th quarter in their home opener against a team that didn't make the playoffs.

Then he listed his top 5.

5... Chicago

4... Jacksonville

3... Baltimore

2... Atlanta

and 1... Cincinnati!!!

He was impressed with the defense being able to shut down Larry Johnson, but he was really singing the praises of the offense. Here was his best quote:

"How are you going to stop them? You have to put 9 in the box to stop Rudi Johnson, and if you put 9 in the box, Chad Johnson is going to be proposing to cheerleaders on the sideline. They are an absolute bear."

Seriously being unbiased, his picks do look really accurate. Although I think that until The Steelers get beat they are #1. Hopefully Jacksonville can handle some business this weekend. Herre's my picks:

1... Pittsburgh

2... Cincinnati

3... Indy

4... Jacksonville

5... New England (everyone keeps forgeting about Brady)

6... Atlanta

7... Baltimore

8... Seattle

9... Da Bears

10... Toss up between Miami (even with a loss in pittsburgh), New York Giants, and Dallas - One of these teams will be in the playoffs.

I think you have to include San Diego on that list. You can argue that Rivers only threw the ball 11 times, and that they were playing against Oakland... but that defense was dominating, and Tomlinson is the reason Rivers only had to throw it 11 times. Going based only on what we know right now, they were as impressive as anyone.

I agree the Chargers looked strong, but I'm waiting to see them play someone else beforeI jump on their bandwagon. Tomlinson can't carry that type of load week in weeek out, he'll become the Earl Campbell of his generation. I'm surprised the Seahawks aren't ranked higher.

Charger's are nice, but I don't see them being as successful this year. Yes mainly b/c this is Rivers 1st season. They do have a good D but Rivers will not do the same as Big Ben did his 1st season, which is very rare. Rivers will throw alot of interceptions but learn a lot this year. I remember Palmer's 1st season when he made some mistakes like throwing some pretty big interceptions like the one to Polamalu when he got ran over for a TD. Every game is a learning period for new QB's in the NFL. Palmer has done a great job at learning coverages and how to check down and how not make bad decisions. I honestly do not see the Chargers going to the playoffs but I could be wrong. Rivers is a good QB, better than Brees, but will make bad decisions and blow a few games. Tomlinson I dont think will be able to carry the team, and SD's defense isn't that of the SB ravens caliber, which will not carry them into the playoffs or better. Maybe next year....

Denver will win that div.

I agree with everything you said... but we have to establish the critera for the ranking... and maybe that's why people hate them so much.

Are we going off of what we think they will continue to do in the future, or based on what we've seen so far? If we go based on what we've seen so far... then you have to have SD in the top 10, and Cincy has a legitmate claim on the #1 spot. If we're going based on what "experts" continue to predict... well then, the Colts, Steelers, and Seahawks have to stay on top.

Eventually expert opinions don't matter anymore, and what you do on the field is all that counts. I prefer to go based on what we see on the field (mostly because the Bengals were as impressive as anyone in week 1).

I think that power ranking do have to take into account a little bit of actuall fact too, like Pittsburgh being the #1 team b/c they won the SB and haven't lost yet, and SD having basically a rookie QB and also beating a weak Oakland team. As much as I hate to say this, Pittsburgh has the best team in the league at this point. I do think that we're better than Pittsburgh but won't know that until week 3. If Pittsburgh losses to Jacksonville, they will slide back significantly to like 5-6 but Jacksonville could very well be in the top 3. If we go to Pittsburgh week 3 and win, every power ranking out there will have us at #1...

I see that your from Japan, but she's pretty well known around the tri-state (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana). She went to the University of Kentucky and is a Famous Hollywood actress who's starred in dozens of films. Her name is Ashley Judd, check her out, she's is such a fox. Never had the chance to meet her though, unfortunately.

Dang...does the AFC North rule the NFL or what!?! Steelers/Bengals/Ravens...three out of the top 4 teams? Toughest division in the NFL I'd have to say! :bengal:
