Herm had this to say in an interview today...

"Q: Your thoughts on the first two weeks with games against Cincinnati and Denver.

EDWARDS: “We can’t change the schedule. (Cincinnati) is 6-2 on the road (in ‘05) and Marvin’s done a great job. They were 11-5 last year and won their division. They’re a playoff team. Denver’s a playoff team and won our division. They’ll test your mettle right away – one at home and one on the road.

“I think it’s great. I think you find out a lot about your football team. You have no choice. A lot of people were wondering in the off-season that their quarterback might not be there (for the opener.) You know what? I’m glad he’s playing. I want him to play. I would be disappointed if they came in here without their starting quarterback. I want to see how good we are.

“That’s just me. That’s the kind of player I was and I’ve always been that way. I want to play against the best guys. I don’t want to sugar-coat it. Let’s find out about ourselves. They’ve scored a lot of points the last couple of weeks. They’re a machine. That’s great."

Boo Yah! Lets go play!

Oh, BTW, just to rankle a few folks: how come the Chiefs site has an article about NEXT Sunday's game already and we don't? How come they have a coach's interview talking about the Bengals already and we don't?

Just wondering... :o

Sounds like he's getting ready for a loss.

I haven't been following the Chiefs' training camp/pre-season, but if they're already talking about week 1, then they must not have had any notable come-backs (i.e. Carson) or any notable roster battles. Plus, playing the Bengals is a bigger deal for them than playing the Chiefs is for us.

I don't think it's a big deal to still be covering the pre-season cuts. If this were the regular season, they wouldn't be talking about the next game until at least Tuesday.

I like Herm Edwards... He wants to play us at our best ..no excuses either way .. Thats the way it should be..

I want Trent Green and LJ to be healthy as well..

Lets the offenses go at it for both teams and see who blinks first..

High scoring game.. trouble for the Chiefs is the Bengasl score most of them!

Bengals 31 Chiefs 20

Let the smack talk begin:

The Bengals have been preparing for several weeks for their opening-day opponent, Kansas City. The Chiefs are getting ready for the Bengals, too.

The Chiefs yielded more passing yards than all but two teams last season. Though they were impressed by Palmer, they weren't awed.

"I think our defense is better than Green Bay," Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen said. "We have a different mentality up front."

Well, from the stat sheets:

Points per game last year-

Kansas City 20.3 (Bengals last game probably deflated this some.) :P

Green Bay 21.5

Yards per game last year-

Green Bay 293.1

Kansas City 328.1

1 point per game differential in scoring but 35 yds per game differential? Methinks that KC defense is just as bad as the GB defense, if not just a little worse, Jared. But we WILL find out the truth on Sunday.

WhoDey

On another note, this story is up on the KC paper...

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/s...fs/15428214.htm

Shields remains on guard for KC

Chiefs’ Pro Bowler returns for another year, but he isn’t saying that much about it.

By ELIZABETH MERRILL

The Kansas City Star

Go find Joe. He’ll tell you what’s eating at Will Shields. The clock hand clicked past 3 on Saturday afternoon, Shields emerged from the training room, and in seven days, one of the longest streaks in the NFL could effectively end because of a bum ankle.

How do you feel, Will? Is it ready?

Shields let out one, “Can’t complain,” several, “I can’t tell yous,” then conceded after 13 years in the league, he’s grown a little grumpier.

The king’s followers, at the moment, are getting restless. Pro Bowl tackle Willie Roaf retired, the Chiefs offense has struggled, and Shields has been out for two weeks because of a high ankle sprain. In times like these, Kansas City turns to its veteran, an 11-time Pro Bowl guard, an iron man who’s started in 207 straight games, for some sort of pulse.

I know that pre season means squat, but I was pleased with the tendencies that the team displayed. Consistency on both sides of the ball ..... always around the ball .... take aways vs fumbles 0 ints. All good indicators.

Having said that ... and considering the problems that the Chiefs have had they are not going to be easy at home. I enjoy our encounters with the Chiefs like I used to with the old Oilers ( Pastorini era). Just plain good ol tough football.

No injuries .... anywhere .... good game ..... final 28 to 20 Bengals. :bengal::cheers:

The Chiefs also gave up on DT Junior Siavii on Saturday, which has to be a setback for a team that's been investing (fruitlessly) in buidling a better D for years. (Somehow a scenario that sounds a tad familiar...)

I'm betting it will be a reasonably high scoring affair, something along the lines of 31-27. Hopefully the Bengals come out on top.

so they Chiefs will run behind 285lb Kyle Turley? little diffeent than Willie Roaf this year to be sure...

Is Turley and the other inexperience tackle going to stop Justin and Geathers all day from getting to Green? dont think so..

How will the Chief secondary stop a 3 receiver set and a no huddle?

Answer ..they wont...

Crowd factor? Last I recall the Bengals have played in Cleveland and Pittsburgh so its not like thats a major problem either..

I dont see this game as close at all....

Bengals 31 Chiefs 17....the score wont be as indicative as what really transpires on the field...

Will Trent Green have his knee shredded early in the game, and the Bengals will overcome a 7-17 deficit to win it?

I dont wish injury to any Chief....

With the weak play at OT the Chiefs will rely on Tony Gonzalez to block more and take him out of his recieving more than they'd like..

They are hurting offensively and their secondary is second rate toast..

Plus, as I learned from fantasy football, Tony Gonzalez doesn't usually hit his stride until 5 or 6 weeks into the season. My only concern is Larry Johnson.

Not taking anything away from LJ but its allot different running in back of Turley than Roaf woudlnt you think.

Will Shields has a high ankle sprain as well and may not play....even if he does how effective can he be in run blocking...

True. And with Sam and Peko, our concerns over top-notch RB's shouldn't be so automatic.

Here's an interesting stat that I stumbled on earlier today. Among RB's last year... only Reuben Droughns of the Cleveland Browns had more fumbles than Larry Johnson. I imagine that Larry would have exceeded that amount had he been the starter the entire season.

And in the event that you hadn't noticed... it's never a good idea to fumble against the Bengals.

They have a pretty awesome CB duo in Surtain and Law. I know the preseason stats werent good, but these guys know how to pick it up when it counts. They also drafted a pretty good LB last year whose name i forget.

I cannot get the images of LJ running anywhere and everywhere through our D last year. He scares me. Lots! I hope ML has made our D watch that film a hundred times.

Im gonna count on our D improvements and say Bengals win 28-24.

Derrick Johnson is the LB you are thinking of

Chiefs have always patent themselves on their ability to run the ball, especially in the red zone. Without that hulk of an offensive line in tact I see them and especially Larry Johnson having problems moving the sticks all season long

At the risk of belaboring the obvious, it will come down to 1. stopping Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzales, 2. harassing Trent Green, 3. protecting Carson, and 4. opening holes for Rudi.

The Chiefs have some talent at LB and in the secondary, but their d-line is iffy. Our o-line ought to be able to create room for the run game. One guy to watch out for is rookie Tamba Hali; I'm sure they will send him Palmer hunting early and often. Hopefully, the Bengals can get the run game going and force the Chiefs to keep a safety or corner up near the line.

TG really worries me more than LJ. The Bengals historically suck at stopping talented TEs, and elite ones like TG usually eat our D for lunch. Best way to stop him IMHO is to get some pressure on Green, which might force them to keep TG in for pass protection. With an unsettled KC o-line, the Bengals just might be able to do that. Hopefully Pollack's hammy is good to go at game time, this looks like a contest in which an elite situational pass rusher could put multiple notches in his belt. Justin Smith could get his contract year started off right, too. And hopefully Jumpy Jr. continues his preseason ways.

Gonzales has a bad habit of starting season's very slowly... Fantasy owners always seem to go into a panic before he breaks out of the funk around week 6. I'm not saying that trend means much, but it's there regardless.

I think our woes in stopping tight ends last season had a lot to do with Ohalete being very crappy at just about everything safety related. I expect improvement this year.
