TJJackson Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 As many of you were aware, I was not happy about this year's draft. To put it mildly. When they Bengals took Peko, I was already seething about what I considered (and still consider) to be the single worst pick made - Frostee the Slowman - and so when the r4 choice came up I was expecting them to choose a good player from amongstDT Barry Cofield (Giants - helped shut out the Chiefs)DT Kyle Williams (Bills - already the starter at RDT)S Pat Watkins (Cowboys - Parcells is VERY happy with himLB Terna Nande (Titans - is having a decent camp as far as I know - was not run over by a mascot on golf cart)and so I wasn't unhappy they went defensive, I was just wanting a player I felt was of better caliber.Well...he's had two good games now, and I have to say, I am starting to come around. I believe I have said in the recent past that he will be a pratice squad player at best, but it's clear now he will not only make the team but push for significant playing time, with the outside possibility of even supplanting a starter. What more can one reasonably expect of a 4th round draft pick?I realize there are still 2 preseason games to be played and a lot can happen between then and now, but I just wanted to openly admit I was wrong about Peko and now look forward to seeing him play.I still hate the Frostee pick, tho :-) Quote
BlainThePain Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 What would it take for you to warm up to Frostee? By the way, I hated the Frostee pick, too Quote
cincy9275 Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 peko has been pleasantly surprising Quote
BengalChamps Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I assume that Peko's game snaps will be much reduced when Fat Sam gets into the action. He has been a pleasant surprise though. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I think Peko has a chance to supplant Thornton now. i've never been too happy with Thornton's play, and I'm not sure off the top of my head when his contract ends, but I hope it's this year. Quote
ChadJohnson-85 Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I'd like to see Peko get Rookie of the year + become a starter by next year. I wouldn't be surprised.Who Dey!!! Quote

Has a non-starter ever won Rookie of the Year? I doubt it.I like what Peko's doing, but I'd also like to see him go up against 1st stringers. It's still early. Quote
Kazkal Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Mybe he'll end up a starter How active has fourth-round defensive tackle Domata Peko been? Five days after being the leading tackler with six and sharing a sack, he had the exact same numbers against the Bills, trailing Friday’s team tackling leader Justin Smith by one.“Look who I play against every day,” said Peko, when asked for reasons. “Bobbie Williams, Big Willie. Those guys make me better.” Quote
Stripes Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 Peko was my favorite pick on draft day, and has certainly done nothing to change my mind. He might lack the raw talent that others had in the draft (or previous drafts... Askew...), but seems to be very motivated. Hopefully that motivation goes beyond just making the team. Quote
aaronburr Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 “Look who I play against every day,” said Peko, when asked for reasons. “Bobbie Williams, Big Willie. Those guys make me better.”Nice theory, Peko, but it doesn't explain our d-line's problems in the past. Heck, last year's secondary practiced against one of the best receiver corps in the league and still had problems. The kid's good, he's working hard, the sky's the limit. Quote

Peko was my LEAST favorite draft choice on draft day, followed closely by Reggie McNeil. That said, Peko has been very impressive and if it continues I'll happily eat a crow biscuit. Quote
kingwilly Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 The Peko pick, to me, passed over better talent and was tainted by the Frucker pick. If Peko can vie for playing time but putting up nice performances in pre-season, then hats off to him...anything that can be done to improve the D line is welcome.Anyone know why Frucker did not play? Wraith Posted August 19, 2006 Report Posted August 19, 2006 I will admit to hating the entire 2006 draft, though Joseph only because I was still upset about missing out on Manny Lawson by one team.I had predicted Lawson followed by Richard Marshall and I firmly belive thatr was the way we would have gone if Lawson had slipped past the 49ers. sigh. I just hope they all prove me wrong certainly Marvin and co. know a heck of alot more about pro football than I do. Quote

You have Joseph who looks very good. Whitworth looking outstanding. Peko looking like a future star. AJ showing up. Brazell looking good. Thats five good players and I haven't mentioned Brooks yet. This draft is fine. The key to a draft in my mind is who is a starter from rounds 4 to 7. This is where you find the guys who can be surprises in the pleasant way and who play for low cost contracts. In he Lewis era, they are finding NFL players in rounds 4 to 7. Quote

aaronburr Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 I thought he got the start last night? He did, but CJ85 is suggesting that he won't be a regular season starter until next year. That he'll be good enough to win ROY but not good enough to win a starting job. In my mind, that's like saying a girl is good enough to sleep with, but I'm not sure if I want to kiss her. Okay, maybe that's a bad example. But still, he's putting the cart before the horse. No pun intended.Regardless of whether or not a non-starter deserves to win, it's unlikely that a non-starter would get enough attention to win. Look at how Odell did last year as a Day 1 starter. It's not likely that Peko will get the same opportunties, making the road to ROY that much more difficult. Quote
derekshank Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Had a DT ever won rookie of the year? Maybe a good pass-rusher DT... but one that fills the gaps and stops the run? They get very little love. LB's, DE's and CB's win rookie of the year. Quote

semiotter Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Hey its great to see "D"line with more depth and better players. Im not complaining..... Quote
angst Posted August 20, 2006 Report Posted August 20, 2006 Peko and fat Sam shoulder to shoulder as the interior line. Old guy teaching the young stud and they make each other look good. Isn't that Sam's speciality, standing next to another big guy to create a stone wall? W o W ! Quote
