I haven't had a chance to go yet, but here are some comments from Lance . . .

"Things I saw and heard this morning

Thoughts from the morning practice in Georgetown:

Heat: Unbearable....I don't know how they do it. Don't know how they'd put them thru it Tuesday 3-5pm.

Crowd: Huge.....biggest I've seen for a morning, weekday

Guys not practicing:

*Antonio Chatman: New injury. Didn't see any wraps or braces....maybe a groin?

*Sam Adams: Walked with a little hitch. Cap on backwards. Consensus from those I talked to. "That's Sam being Sam". "Marvin knows what he's got in him....it bothered Tim Krumrie in Buffalo, but not Marvin here." "He'll be ready in week one." "Combo of not needing to push him and him being a little out of shape"

*Jonathan Fanene: Hammy

*Chris Perry: Walking with wrap on foot/shin.

*FA quarterback Erik Meyer in a walking boot after spraining his ankle Sunday

Sizing them up:

*Ahmad Brooks: The body God meant for a LB. Unreal.

*Andre Whitworth: HUGE!. Played OT vs 3-4, totally engulfed Frostee Rucker on the rush.

*Bennie Brazell: Has to be the smallest waist I've ever seen on a football player...it's super model like...can't be more than 28-inches. Fast!

*PK Sam.....long and skinny

*Dexter Jackson: You are going to love this guy. Brings attitude, always talking.

Sight of the morning: The Oklahoma Drill. As one observer said, "This is why we show up".

Other sights:

*Carson moving well and rolling out, but you can tell timing is off....especially with Chad. Carson slapped his hands together a number of times after missing WR's.

*Carson in an extended conversation with Chris Henry after they didn't hook up.

*TJ and Tony S dropping passes and then dropping to do push-up's.

*Reggie McNeal dropping a couple of passes over the middle

*Brazell: Catching a beauty of a deep ball from Carson. Deltha was covering him and said, "Good route rookie", after the play. The kid runs like a gazelle.

*Jonathan Joseph: Wow...fast/quick. Never thought he'd close in time on a couple of sideline passes. He did.

*Eric Henderson: Wearing Anthony Munoz's #78

*Chad: Challenging Marvin to cover him for a snap....."Come on, you afraid of me?"

Cool drill: They split the LB's and DB's.....one drill is with a giant rubber ball that is rolled at them....they must stop it, pin it down and then chase the loose football that is rolled to their side. The other drill has one player run with the ball and the defender strip them from behind.

Conversation/battle of the day: Chad vs Dexter Jackson. Squared off in the Oklahoma drill. At one point, Chad said, " We don't need a whistle...let's go. TJ yelled "go" and they squared off, away from the drill.

After Chad could not stay in bounds for a catch vs Dexter.......Dexter walked toward the fans and playfully said, "Who are you going to cheer for now?". Then Chad walks over toward the fans and said, "Don't feel sorry for him". Then when Glenn Holt went deep and faked out Jackson, who fell down, Chad looked at him and said, "Uhhh, he went that way."

I will be attending Wed the 3rds 7-9 practice, as well as Friday's scrimmage. I will be posting the pics as soon as I get home for your viewing pleasure. I wanted to go today, but I couldn't get out of work early enough!

From Sports Illustrated Camp Tour (Bill Syken) today (LINK: SI Bengals Camp )

1. The Bengals had their first two-a-day on Monday; rehabbing quarterback Carson Palmer participated in the morning session and looked fine but took the evening session off. Not to overstate the obvious, but Cincinnati needs him. In the night session new backup Anthony Wright, replacing the departed Jon Kitna, threw some nice balls but also a couple of ugly picks, including one to rookie defensive end Frostee Rucker. Third stringer Doug Johnson, on his fourth team in four years, threw one pass to Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson that was just off-target enough to make you think Johnson was going to pull half his muscles contorting to make the catch. (He pulled in the ball unharmed).

The Bengals think Palmer could be ready for Kansas City, but if they decide to take the cautious route with their 26-year-old franchise quarterback, the Bengals will do well to come out of their first four games -- at Kansas City, home against Cleveland, at Pittsburgh and home against New England -- with two wins.

2. Here's a quote from coach Marvin Lewis about one of his rookies: "He's going to be a big-time asset for us when we get into the season ... He'll make a big impact."

He was talking about wide receiver Bennie Brazell, the Bengals' second pick in the seventh round. The Bengals think they have a good one in the former U.S. Olympic team hurdler who played football only part-time at LSU. Brazell has plenty to learn but he has impressed with his grit as well as his ability to zip by corners. That's why, less than a week into training camp, Lewis is talking about the 231st overall selection as if he has already made the team.

3. At the other end of the draft, the Bengals are also happy with their top pick, cornerback Johnathan Joseph of South Carolina. In drills Monday he showed the ability to stay with Johnson stride for stride down the sideline. Says safety Madieu Williams, "The guy can just run. He's definitely working his way into the rotation."

4. Assuming Palmer is in the lineup, the Bengals will return all 11 starters from last season. If there's an issue on offense, it's their lack of depth at running back, particularly with the possibility that Chris Perry may not be ready for the season opener because of knee problems. After Rudi Johnson the Bengals have Kenny Watson, who is mostly a third down back, two rookie free agents and a guy from last year's practice squad.

5. I may be guilty of judging a book by its cover, a dangerous thing to do with an accomplished and savvy veteran such as DT Sam Adams, whom the Bengals signed in the off-season. Adams has never been a candidate for the cover of a fitness magazine, and looking at him, it's hard to believe he's the answer for the team's run defense. Right now he's the answer to the question, "Who's that fat guy over there on the sidelines?"

Factoid

Brian Simmons played five seasons at middle linebacker before moving outside three years ago. He'll have a four-game return engagement in the middle in '06 while last year's rookie defensive star, Odell Thurman, serves a suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Fantasy Geek Note

The Bengals threw the ball nearly 100 times more than they ran it last year -- and that's including 34 runs credited to Palmer, for 41 yards. But hearing Marvin Lewis talk about how he thought the offense was "too cute," it sounds like the run-pass ratio might level out some this year. If you're thinking about taking Rudi Johnson, keep thinking that way.

Camp Confidential

The Bengals have an abundance of talented wide receivers, which means someone with ability is going to get cut. My hunch: fourth-year player Kelley Washington.
