Team Troubles Creates a Distraction

Not that I really value his opinion... but Skip Bayless was on the Cold Pizza show 1st and 10. He mentioned that he covered the Dallas Cowboys during the years of their dynasty. He said something along the lines of:

"That Cowboys team makes the Bengals look like a Sunday School class... and they wond 3 of 4 Super Bowls."

I'm not saying these problems won't be a distraction. But I do think that for the most part their problems are over-stated.

This dudes article is pointless. He goes on to talk about distractions but then mentions Ray 'The Knife' Lewis at the end and how it was such a distraction that the team won the SB....I don't get it?

Besides everyone knows Atlanta was lucky to be in the SB the year they were, their SB was the NFC Championship Game when they stunned the Vikings in what had to be one of the biggest upsets ever in a Championship Game.

I don't think football players are distracted by the same things that bewitch fans and the media. For example, after the Biggest Ben did a face plant into a speeding car, and was feared lost for some time, I read several comments from Steeler players who said that Roethlisbergers situation wouldn't become a distraction. Instead, they'd just mentally treat it within their lockerroom as if he had been injured normally...something NFL players are constantly reacting to.

Besides, whenever someone misses time due to being hopelessly fugtarded it creates an opportunity for other players. For example, Henry's meltdown has breathed life into Kelley Washington's career just as he's approaching unrestricted free agency. And Tab Perry has to be chomping at the bit knowing that he's likely to play a greater role than previously expected. Henry may have had special talent, but the Bengals are extremely deep at WR. So everybody moves up one spot and someone is going to get an opportunity that they're hungry for.

Don't get me wrong as there's really no way to put a positive spin on player meltdowns. But for all of the gnashing of teeth it shouldn't be forgotten that the Bengals are able to react to todays headlines from day one, before camp has even begun.

i am getting real f**king sick of hearing all the reporters and fans saying that these guys will be a distraction . if any of these guys know anything about people or football they should know these guys are not the core players on this team or are any of them team leaders . odell was close but isn't now. i am positive that guys like carson , chad , willie and so on will not let any of these guys become a distraction to what the want to achieve . a championship . so let''s stop with all the negative bulls**t and start talking about how this team will be a dominant force this season or anything positive . like carson's progress or levi's extension . i really believe this team will be better than last season and be a top contender for the superbowl . WHO DEY !

Distraction? A team divided? The return of Cancer Corner?

Whether all the offseason follies become a distraction or not will largely depend -- IMHO, of course -- on whether they continue into the season. Obviously, there are existing court dates that will have to be dealt with over the next few months, but as long as everyone stays out of trouble once the games begin, I think things will be fine.

Note this assumes that the Bengals do reasonably well on the field; if they get on a losing streak expect the negative to rear its ugly head regardless...

Of course Palmer and Chad want to keep Henry around. It created huge mismatches for Palmer to take advantage of, and it lessens the ability to double team Chad. I still just don't know if he's worth the trouble, and if you want to send a message to the rest of the team about personal condut, heavy discipline for Henry is where you have to start.

That's just the point. Football players, even conservative good guys like Palmer, don't really care if you spend your free time clubbing with drunken teenage whores.

They just want to know how fast you can run by a defender.

As for discipline, Henry may have to be ritually sacrificed, but the Bengals can remain neutral if the wish to and let the NFL swing the blade. They can, if they so desire, openly support the player(s) in question, and in the process promote team unity.

You could be right, but I'm not sure if it's more just a little sympathy for the guy they played and practiced with all through last season. In the end it's Marvin's choice, but I do think having two players he trusts coming to him expressing their opinion will make an impact on what he decides to do.

Henry does seem to be the odds-on favorite as sacrificial character lamb, but if any of the "troublemakers" fail to make the roster, I wonder if Odell isn't the more likely one. From a position and talent standpoint -- good MLBs are harder to find than good No. 3 WRs -- it would seem unlikely, but when all is said and done I think Henry will still have a strike or two left under NFL policy. Odell, meanwhile, is for the rest of his career one missed whiz quiz away from getting bounced for a year. Their grabbing Brooks was, I think, insurance against just that. And if someone comes on in the middle (Hobson suggests on bengals.com it'll be Caleb Miller but 'll believe that when I see it) they might decide just to cut ties with Odell and remove the volatility from the MLB slot.
