All that off the field stuff is moot IF the guys can come in, play and not be a distraction. It's when they start having to miss games that it becomes an issue. No Thurman for four games, what about Henry, and Palmer? That's not the way you want to start the season.

What the f**k? I don't even know what to make of this? Why is all this happening? Why are these players getting a chance from us in the first place, and why do all of them have to f**k up? I love Odell, but I liked Henry too. But we're wasting all these draft picks on people who can't play for us or might not be able to. Thurman, Henry, Rucker, Nicholson, and I'm sure with all the talent in the world Brooks will find a way to f**k up too.

Its not like we need Thurman he will just miss the

Kansas City,Cleveland,Pittsburgh,New England games

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

This is why character counts.....

Next time one of you tell me that character doesn't matter REMEMBER this day.

Remember it for the first 4 games when O'del is O'missing cause O'del cant stop O'smoking

Talent counts too. I fact, I'm willing to bet that Odell Thurman intercepted more passes last season than Caleb Miller will end his career with.

Talent has to get on the field first---if talent cant live within the rules of the game and society(also known as CHARACTER),then talent cant get on the field.

Brilliant move by Marvin, he kept Odell under wraps until he got Brooks so the Dolphins and Niners wouldn't take him out from under us. If it had been public knowledge that Odell was going to be suspended one of those two teams (figuring that the Bengals were targeting him) would have taken Brooks in the third. Hats off to a game well played.

Good point. It must've been pretty difficult too based on the frequency of the rumors. This has probably been the case for at least a month. I'll bet this is exactly what actually happened. I think the 9'ers were certain that he would be theirs at the top of the 4th.

I just had to check out PFT's take and was somewhat compelled. The ususal stuff, but less so and then this little tidbit about how OT has been working hard on this problem (ie, recovery?) and how he can be a great player. Not exactly what I expected.

I just read on Profootball talk that in order for Thurman to get to this level(4 game suspension) he has had to go through several levels of the substance abuse program.

Which means that the Bengals likely knew this before the draft.

Which begs the question, why would you draft Nicholson(character question) to replace him?

And then why draft another person kicked off his team for drugs?

All this in light of the Chris Henry stuff, then the Nicholson stuff, then the Rucker stuff?

Somebody take away Marvin's copy of the Longest Yard.

You could feel it coming.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a four game suspension means he failed multiple drug tests, right?

That or he missed one or more drug tests, since a miss counts as a fail in the NFL's book.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that if he fails/misses another test at any point going forward, he gets the boot for an entire season.

And Caleb Miller can't get on the field because he's not talented enough. There's no getting around that.

We can go around in circles all day but it's not going to change anything. Teams constantly take measured risks in the pursuit of pure talent, and when that talent is on the field it frequently shows up in the win column.

Chris Henry makes this teams offense more explosive than K-Dub or Kevin Walters could. In fact, he scored more often than any WR taken in last years draft. Like it or not, Odell Thurman made more impact plays in a single season than Caleb Miller will ever make. And finally, just as the article that you posted in another thread correctly claimed, if Ahmed Brooks is a risk...he's a blue-chip risk.

Teams that never take risks never have to defend their actions because they never matter.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that if he fails/misses another test at any point going forward, he gets the boot for an entire season.

Yup, that's my understanding as well. We're talking about a very short leash now, and we'll know soon enough if Odell has a long term future in the NFL.

One failed drug test....you go into the substance abuse program but no suspensions and no one in the media is alerted. It also means more drug tests than the average player.

2 failed...4 game suspension.

3...done for the year.

I think the type of drug also matters. I think the above is for recreational drugs like MJ.

Missing a drug test, and giving a diluted sample are also considered positive.

You two are both right -- and I think in that we may be missing a larger point: the Bengals don't seem to have a lot of luck, or perhaps I should say skill, in finding guys who are 1. talented, and 2. not character risks. In short, their last few drafts look a lot worse today than they did 24 hours ago. Which also helps explain reaching for Brooks today in the supplemental.

They had some success a few years ago in Marvin's first draft, with Carson in the 1st and Steinbach in the 2nd, but that was also with the huge benefit of the first overall pick in each round. Thrown into the mix with everyone else and the results seem rather thin to me. Madieu is really the only starter so far that they have drafted who has been both kick-ass and not a headache (Pollack and Landon may get there).

Meanwhile you have two starters in Odell and Henry (2nd and 3rd rounders) in the process of character implosions, and a bunch of apparently "good" guys like Washington, Miller, Ratliff, Perry, all day one grabs, who aren't living up to their selections.

We can't go on drafting this way; the war room needs a revamp.
