Hobson

Is it just me or has Mr. Hobson become the Bengals lackey/minister of mis-information?

When I read his stuff these days (e.g. the Pollack's not really hurt bit), I feel kind of like I'm reading the reports from the Cubs medical staff. You know, Prior's not hurt bad even though his arm just fell off!

It's got to be a tough situation to be a journalist and get your paycheck directly from the team you cover (ask Steve Stone after he criticized Baker a& the cubs) or with the clubs approval (remember the knock down drag outs the Reds and WLW had over Marty & Joe when the Reds sucked in the 80's?)

It just makes Bengals.com less meaningful. Thank goodness we have the zone for objective team coverage!

1. Bengals.com is NOT a commentary website. It's a marketing website set to provide information about the team, the organization, and more behind the scenes, the business. To expect hardcore commentary from a website that markets the team would be a bit counter-productive, wouldn't you agree.

2. Hobson is a beat writer that uses a well mannered approach when it comes to opinions. Why? Have you ever had to interview a player? Well, do you want to interview a player AFTER you spend an entire paragraph just writing "he sucks, he sucks, he sucks". Again, counter-productive.

I'm not going after you Walls, honestly. I just think he gets more flak than he should simply because of expectations that are way too high that he should find and uncover Roswell.

As for mis-information, you may want to talk to Marvin about that. That's who Hobson, as he points out in his e-mail on the front page, gets it from. Hobson, being the beat reporter, passes it along. He's not an investigative journalist -- and no, just because you're a journalist doesn't mean you're supposed to go on a crusade finding out who truly killed Kennedy; not all journalists are like Bill O’Reilly.

Really, I think the problem is that Hobson is just *too* objective - if he was less so, it would be more apparent that he was just a mouthpiece and nobody would bitch. But he does a decent job - if one goes back and reads the pieces written around the time of the draft, he seemed a tad more ah, *bewildered*, than a lot of the homers on this board for sure.

Actually, ever since RalphMTSU from the huddles board called him out in the now-infamous "why are you a lying sack of s**t" (OK, I'm paraphrasing  ) Hobson's Choice not long ago, Geoff has become noticeably -- at least IMHO -- more, uh, feisty in his appraisals of the team and its moves.

I just wish he would stick to writing. His video interviews are terrible. The guy can't speak without stuttering. He sounds like such a wienie when he tries to spew out a question to Marvin during a press conference and Marvin just looks disgusted in his direction.

Thats because Hobson ISN'T stuttering, he's cutting the cheese and Marvin is taking it with both nostrils!

Yes, but you see, when he did stick to writing, people just like you bitched about it because Bengals.com didn't have enough video.....

Hobson provides the facts we need.

Quit bustin' this guys balls. I think he's fine. You have to think he's a fan as well. He's only got the sweetest job in the world. He is the Bengals main reporter, he has access to all of the players. You would have a rosey outlook too. What are you going to do? Bad mouth a player and then go into the locker room and have everyone treating you like an idiot?

What are you talking about ?

Your buying into the idea, that because Pollack has a boot on his FOOT it must mean that he has a broken leg ?

Has it ever occurred to you, that it just might be the scum-sucking-bengal-hating-steeler-homer over at PFT who is the real "minister of mis-information" ?
