derekshank Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 The guy is an absolute stud on Special Teams. He had 25 special teams tackles last year... and I just read this write-up on him. Kilmer is a very interesting prospect because he began the 2005 season as a backup receiver at Penn State and only had 15 catches for the entire season (his season high was six vs. Florida State in their Bowl Game), but by season's end he had become Penn State's star special teams player who helped them win the field position battle in nearly every game. He is an excellent "Gunner" on the punt coverage team -- he flies down the field, finds the returner and breaks down and tackles very well out in space -- he was amazing vs. Purdue, making six solo tackles on coverage units. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/draft/1108916He should be a much better special teamer than Walter (who I assume he is replacing). The other aspect that I like about him is that even though he didn't make much of an impact at a WR, he is versatile, because he was a FS the year before. Hopefully he'll be able to mature into decent depth at both WR and S in a bind (although it would mean bad things if he ever had to take the field in either capactity). All that said... with a 7th round pick we got a player who should make an immediate impact as an upgrade on Special Teams, an area that we didn't exactly struggle in to begin with. (7th in the NFL in oponents starting field position). Quote
Folz Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Yea but whenever we screwed up hardcore on special teams we lost. Buffalo and Jacksonville. Quote
duus Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Yea but whenever we screwed up hardcore on special teams we lost. Buffalo and Jacksonville. Thanks for reminding me of those games. The first was the Jags on Sunday night. I had friends over and hated it. I was at the Bills game ... hated that even more. Last year, I believe I saw only the following games due to living out of town:First Steeler game ... ugly lossJags game ... another ugly lossColts game ... very exciting, but a lossSecond Steeler game ... finally, I saw a winBills game ... ugly, ugly, uglyChiefs game ... I happened to be in KY, and, yes, another lossSteeler playoff game ... more friends again, ugly beginning, a lossMaybe I should find a way to not watch any games. Hmmm. Quote
Stripes Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 I think Kilmer was a good pick as well, but he'll be hardpressed to make the roster as a WR. I guess the same was said about Walter last year and he still made due to his special teams contributions. Quote

HairOnFire Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 It sucks, but Duus must be sacrificed for the greater good of all Bengala. He'll be missed. Quote

derekshank Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 No... he's not going to play anywhere but special teams. I was just mentioning that he's got background in both offense and defense, so can be panic button depth in a bind. (God I pray this never happens) Quote
walshfan Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 makes the team as a gunner... 23 special teams tackles last year tells you he's a good one... Quote
GROIIIDayton Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 No one is making the team as a gunner. You have to be able to contribute in other ways to make this team. Quote
Stripes Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 No one is making the team as a gunner. You have to be able to contribute in other ways to make this team.I said the same thing last season before training camp... I didn't think Walter would make the team because of all the WR options ahead of him, but it seems Marv liked his special teams contribution (and later his emergence as a real WR option in the preseason). I think Kilmer has a shot, but only if Henry is gone or McNeal doesn't make it.*EditNevermind, he's not a WR at all if his number is any indication. It'll still be tough for him to make the team, but any extra safety depth would be welcome. Quote
BlainThePain Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 No one is making the team as a gunner. You have to be able to contribute in other ways to make this team.I disagree. Marvin values special teams and I remember reading an interview with him saying he would use the third string of some positions to fill special teams. I bet he's the fifth safety on the roster. By the way, I love the pick, too. Quote

I guess the same was said about Walter last year and he still made due to his special teams contributions. He won't try out as a WR they gave him a DB number so hes a DB which is fine sense most of our DB's after 2nd string were pure special t eamers who were never ment too play on defense Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Yes he'll be a DB and ST'er - Myles replacement. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Where is R.Myles these days? Serving Frostees at Wendy's? Knowing he will prob. never make it on an NFL roster again? Quote
TJJackson Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Hard to say. a lot of teams subscribe to the notion that after 3 years on special teams, if a player doesn't break through at a so-called "real" position, it's time to bring in a younger (and cheaper) guy to replace him.Reggie had his three years *shrug* Quote
Mondo Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Marvin's comments about Kilmer were specifcally Special-T oriented. I be he will be a difference maker & leader there and a backup saftey. Quote

TJJackson Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 can you tell mitchell that? He's on the bubble, isn't he?What works in his favor is that his position is one of the thinnest on the team, and he is one of the most personable guys you'd ever want to know, what they call a "good locker room guy".Nonetheless, he's a single free agent pickup or a rookie suprise away from the waiver wire.
