Man, the hype machine is running overtime right now.

He's a gimmick player, and I don't expect anything more than that.

Agreed.

I doubt he makes any noticeable impact as a wideout, even if Henry doesn't return. I think he makes the roster at the #6 receiver, and will be used for tricks.

I think he could push Krenzel for the #3 QB spot though.

hell man I would try him out returning kick offs! That is if he can handle catching the ball. He could be the next Dante Hall, the way stops on a dime and changes direction.

I believe Tab Parry will be the next Dante Hall.

i agree.

watchin that video only showed that he is very very fast. he can't cut that well honestly, and he's not a reciever. patrick johnson was faster than he is, and that dude pumped my frickin gas last thursday.

benny brazell is much faster than mcneal, anyways. not a peep about him? that dude was an olympic runner and i've read he ran under 4.2 in the 40

...brazell didn't get much p.t. at lsu because he was behind two future 1st-round recievers. i know a dude who avidly watches lsu games and said that brazell has great hands as well, but just flew under the radar because of a lack of playing time. not sayin he'll be a stud, but i am more psyched about that dude than mcneal..

he can't cut that well honestly

I totally disagree with that assessment.

It looks to me like he can cut very well and can change direction on a dime.

Ditto. Not only is he very agile, but his reaction/decision-making speed is amazing. A lot of those plays, you can't tell if he's going to run or throw until it's too late.

And if those highlights are representative, he seems to be good at avoiding big hits. Brazell might be faster, but he doesn't have as much experience being chased, and avoiding tackles. All the speed in the world isn't going to help if you can't avoid that first hit after the catch.

There is a great deal of hype here, but there's no reason to think he wouldn't be able to make big plays on the next level. Even if he's not the best route-runner in the beginning (his hands should be fine), I'm sure Marvin wouldn't mind dusting off the old reverse play they used to run with PDub when they couldn't rely on the QB du jour to get him the ball.

Keep in mind that this guy was only a 6th round pick. It's not going to take much to live up to a reasonable expectation. Two or three touchdowns in year 1? Doesn't seem far-fetched to me.

Anthoney Wright never ran a sub-4.4 40....

McNeal could get on the field as a WR...but only if Henry and KW are gone....

I am one who does think he could jump Krenzel for the #3 as well....he is a GIGANTIC change of pace...and would be far more difficult to defend than Krenzel...heck, he could beat out Wright....

Whoever posted that he isn't very good at making cuts is a f**king idiot, the guy is a rare athlete that can cut on a dime. He might not make it as a QB but he will make the team. He is a bigger, faster, quicker, more powerful, and stronger armed version of Randel El. If you cannot see that potential, you should quit watching football altogether because you don't know a damn thing about the sport. His cockiness is the only thing getting in his way.

Mcneal will not be our Randel El. I don't see him being on the field as much as RE, or running back punts.

I see him as the #3 QB, who can play the slot in a pinch..and may catch a screen out of the backfield or run a reverse..or facilitate a gadget play.

The Randle El comparison isn't really appropriate anyway. For one thing, after Plaxico left, the Steelers pretty much made him their straight-up, non-gadget, #2 WR. I don't see the Bengals doing that with McNeal for some time. Barring injury or major drop-off in ability, Chad and TJ are locked in for at least 2-3 years. But then, our offense is more pass-oriented, so the #3 and #4 guys are going to get more looks. Here are Randle El's pertinent stats from the last 4 years...

Games / Starts / Catches / Yards / TD's

16 / 0 / 47 / 489 / 2

16 / 1 / 37 / 364 / 1

16 / 7 / 43 / 601 / 3

16 / 15 / 35 / 558 / 1

Meanwhile, here are Chris Henry's stats from last year...

Games / Starts / Catches / Yards / TD's

14 / 5 / 31 / 422 / 6

So if I may make a few broad generalizations, Randle El was lower on the depth chart than Henry his first 2 years, but got a similar number of catches and yards. As he evolved into a starter (and presumably got more playing time), Randle El actually became less productive, even as his QB situation improved. And in his 4 year career, has only scored 1 more TD than Henry did in his only year in the league.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I would want McNeal to be better than "our Randle El".

And for what it's worth, Washington and Walter combined for 29 catches, 312 yards, and 2 TD's last year. Chatman, Tab and McNeal should be able to do better than that. I'm thinking 35-40 catches, 350-400 yards, 4 TD's.

P.S. No 2005 stats on .com from departed FA's (Kitna, Walter, Schobel). Intrigue or just sloppy webmater?

If Cheech is suspended for a few games and the Bengals go 3 wideouts with Chatman included then the possibility of Oneal getting a chance at punt returns may be realistic.. It gives him the opportunity to showcase himself.. Look for him to get a little action in preseason ..

I understand what you are getting at... but I would argue that you didn't include all the "pertinent stats" as you say. For instance...

Randle El's Rushing

Rushes/Yards

19/134

15/75

8/34

12/73

Randle El's Passing

Attempts/Completions/Yards/TD's

8/7/45/0

4/3/6/0

1/1/10/1

3/3/67/1

Randle El's Kick Returns

No/Yards/TD's

32/733/1

24/466/0

25/127/0

1/16/0

Randle El's Punt Returns

No/Yards/TD's

37/257/0

45/542/2

42/347/0

44/448/2

Even if you ignore the punt and kickoff returns... the rushing and passing aspect of his game can't be ignored. When you wrap all of these stats into one player, you get a very versatile and dangerous threat on the football field. (this is why Washington paid him... not because of his pure receiving ability).

I agree with you that he is not as good a pure WR as Henry is. The receiving stats bear that out... but Henry is not the running or passing threat that Randle El is. This is something that can't be measured in stats, and has the ability to impact the rest of the team positively in ways that his stat line doesn't show. The rest of the team can be more effective when the defense has to be prepared for his shenanigans. If McNeal can bring this aspect to our offense, we'll improve much more than just the number of yards and TD's he puts up as a WR.

And Carson Palmer catches a 50 yard reverse pass from Reggie McNeal for a TOUCHDOWN!!

Randle El's Rushing

You're absolutely right. I don't know what I was thinking, not looking past his receiving yards/TD's. My bad.

I still think the versatility a Randle El or McNeal brings to the table is better served in an offense like the Bengals' rather than the Steelers'. The point I was trying to make by bringing up Henry's numbers was not that one player was better than the other, but that a WR (or some hybrid form of a WR) would have more opportunities to score TD's with the Bengals than the Steelers.

If you combine all of Randle El's passing, rushing, receiving and special teams TD's, he's never scored more than 4 TD's a year. Chris Henry scored 6 as a part-time starter, playing 1 position, and no special teams.

It's interesting to look at Randle El's passing numbers though...

1st season -- 7/8 for 45 yards and no TD's. His longest was a 20 yarder, so the other 6 passes were for a total of 25 yards.

2nd season -- 3/4 for 6 yards and no TD's. His longest was a 9 yarder, so the other 2 passes were for -3 yards.

3rd season (first without Plaxico) -- 1/1 for 10 yards and a TD.

4th season -- 3/3 for 67 yards and a TD. His longest was a 51 yarder, so the other 2 passes were for 16 yards.

If I may make another broad generalization, the value of a WR's ability to throw doesn't seem to be in the number of passes attempted, but in the fear that such a play is possible. As Randle El's time as a WR increased, he attempted fewer passes, but had a higher completion rate and scored more points.

Draw whatever conclusion you want regarding McNeal, I just think it's interesting...
