Undrafted Free Agents

So far, 4 of these poor discards might have a chance to stick: Meyer could seriously give both Krenzel and A-Wright a run. Henderson if healthy could wind up starting.

Absolutely. Meyer is going to be the talk of camp....just wait and see. In his career at Eastern Washington, he threw for 10,261 yards, with 84 touchdowns and only 17 interceptions. For you non-math people, that's almost a five to one touchdown to interception ratio. He also was his conference player of the year (twice) and won the award for best player in all of D-1AA.

Just to recap this and two other threads, I believe the complete list of UDFA signing reported so far is:

TE David Jones, LSU

TE Ryan Hamby, Ohio State

DE Eric Henderson, Georgia Tech

RB DeDe Dorsey, Lindenwood

QB Erik Meyer, Eastern Washington

P Danny Baugher, Arizona

OC Jesse Boone, Utah

FB Naufahu Tahi, BYU

LB John Busing, Miami

LB Wyatt Gayer, Anderson U.

I'd consider paying someone to assasinate Ryan Hamby to make sure he never lines up with the first team offense. God forbid he has to actually block someone. He'd probably just whiff, then half-assedly follow them and watch as they destroyed Carson Palmer.

I was fine with him dropping the catch against Texas. I even felt bad for the guy. But when he missed the block against Penn State that caused Troy Smith to get blindsided by Hali and fumble to lose the game, I reacted like Michael after Kay told him she had an abortion. Now I want nothing to do with him.

he also got sacked about 10,000 times-- is he that tough or does he have that tough of a time accounting for pressure?

It probably means he was trying to do too much as the teams best player. Half of the sacks that David Carr received was because he always tried to make a play rather than throw the ball away. Who knows though. I've never even heard of the kid.

Maybe his o-line was awful. Maybe he tried too hard to make plays. Regardless, that can be fixed with coaching. The fact is, he threw 411 passes last year and only FIVE of them were intercepted. That one pick every 82 throws.

Here's another write up on him:

Pros: A strong athlete with a great deal of confidence in his ability. He is quick in his setup and has the ability to slide in the pocket to avoid a pass rush. Has a strong, live arm with a quick compact delivery and is capable of spraying the ball around to a number of receivers. He has developed a nice understanding of defenses with valuable playing experience and has shown excellent decision-making at the Division I-AA level of competition.

Cons: His production in I-AA leaves questions about competition he faced. Has only adequate foot speed to scramble outside the pocket. He needs work on the finer points of the position. He needs to learn to pick up more sophisticated defensive coverage and how to respond to it.

Numbers: In his finale as a senior in the first round of the I-AA Playoffs, he passed for 387 yards and 4 TDs. He finished the season with 4,003 yards passing and 30 TDs. At the Combine, he ran a 4.7 and had a 32.5-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump.

Skinny: A good athlete with the live arm and intangibles including poise and leadership to become a possible NFL starter, but he has a tough learning curve starting as a No. 3 QB. Has all the talent and intangibles to make this jump, but only time will tell if he has the athleticism to compete in the NFL. A good late pick.

Definetly a solid pick-up. His stats are undeniable... because even though he was in I-AA... the guys he played with were too. He should get a boost playing with our offense.

Biggest reason he won't challege Anthony Wright though is that the speed of the game from I-A to the NFL is hard for rookie QB's to adjust to. Think about the difference between I-AA and the NFL.

Definitely. He's one of those players who will probably play on the scout team this season (we obviously won't have 4-5 quarterbacks on the active roster), but in a year or two, he could be competing for the backup spot to Carson.

He has more talent than Krenzel, it's just a matter of learning the offensive system & the ins and outs of NFL defenses and adjusting to the speed of The League.

I'm always wary about the dub-Division I quarterbacks. He obviously has some talent to have put up those numbers, but he was playing against near-high school competition.

Wasn't there another guy in Division II or III that threw like 60+ TD passes this season? I remember there being an article about him being snubbed from the combine on espn.com.

Hey everyone, long-time lurker, first time poster. I registered since I hadn't seen anyone mention this yet, but one of the most intriguing undrafted free agent TEs was Greg Estandia of UNLV and the Bengals have signed him per his hometown newspaper. I like the signing, myself.

we overdrafted Kenny Anderson. I had the guy as a tenth rounder tops

I think coming from out of UNLV probbley hurt him what good players come out of UNLV & UNR (which hurts me because I love nevada) but damn I hope hes our #3 /crosses fingers

PS,ghent can be moved to 2# and then tony can be practice squad :P

Not another signing, but the Fort Wayne ppaper is reporting that University of St. Francis QB Chris Brammel got an invite to Bengals minicamp...

That's my area, St. Francis has been to the last three championships under this kids leadership, they have lost all three.

St. Francis has been a very good team, I think the last 2 years thier only loss came in the championship game.

He will be able to handle some of the throws at Rookie camp, that is probably all.

Has anyone heard whether McNeil is going to Rookie camp as QB, WR or Both?

Tue, 2 May 2006 22:34:17 -0700

Running tally:

LB John Busing, Miami

LB Wyatt Gayer, Anderson U.

Initial reports said they were trying to sign 16 guys...that's 14 so far...

Not another signing, but the Fort Wayne ppaper is reporting that University of St. Francis QB Chris Brammel got an invite to Bengals minicamp...

A swing and a miss. He signed with the Patriots.

Are you sure it was Brammel? I saw a note on kffl they had signed closely-named Wyoming QB Corey Bramlet, but didn't see any blurb about Brammel. Not that they couldn't have inked them both, of course.

My bad. The report I read about the Patriot signing was indeed Corey Bramlet.

I'll accept any punishment you deem appropriate. :bag:

Bengals | Team invites UDFA Bramell for a tryout

Wed, 3 May 2006 14:55:53 -0700

The Journal Gazette reports the Cincinnati Bengals have invited undrafted free agent QB Chris Bramell (St. Francis) for a tryout. At least 10 NFL teams contacted Bramell in the run-up to the draft, but it was no surprise that the Bengals were the team that finally opened the door to him. Cincinnati had been by far the most persistent in staying in touch, he said.

That said, I would be surprised if he were to even make the PS considering the backlog we now have at QB. He's what, No. 7 counting Palmer?
