Texans | Talks with M. Williams heating up

Fri, 28 Apr 2006 14:40:47 -0700

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports talks between the Houston Texans and North Carolina State DE Mario Williams are heating up. The Texans are now offering more than the money paid to QB Alex D. Smith, the first pick in last year's NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Williams might feel comfortable accepting the offer to become the first pick in this weekend's NFL Draft.

They may just be trying to get someone who covets Mario to offer a trade...but Houston already has a good RB and I've never really seen the sense in Bush (for them). If I were them, frankly, I would already have come to an agreement with Ferguson. Houston is going nowhere until they stop giving up a dozen sacks a game.

We'll see.

Gossip-meister Florio over at PFT sez Super Mario to Houston is a "done deal." If true, wow.

MARIO TO HOUSTON A "DONE DEAL"

A league source tells us that the Houston Texans have informed Joel Segal, the agent for Reggie Bush, that the team has a "done deal" with defensive end Mario Williams.

The only question at this point, as the source explained, is whether the Texans are simply making a last-ditch effort to squeeze Segal into taking a more friendly deal.

If this isn't just a marketing ploy, it represents a stunning turn of events. On Thursday, we heard that Bush was a "done deal." And even though the team denied it, another source told us that the team's interest in Williams was merely a smokescreen, aimed at leveraging Bush into wanting less money.

If, in the end, the Texans pass on Bush, the question is whether the team decided to make the move based on merit, money, or mischief. Our guess is that it's a mixture of all three, and that the most recent round of ugly news reports regarding Reggie, his family, and the dudes of New Era was the thing that made the Texans decide to move on.

Still, we've re-confirmed that, earlier in the week, the Texans' interest in Williams arose solely from their desire to drive down Bush's price tag, and that the Texans viewed Williams as the guy whom Bush's camp would most likely regard as a legitimate alternative. So if the Texans have indeed locked on to Mario, it represents a complete 180 from their earlier position.

We're still chasing this on. For now, this has got to be the craziest run up to the draft that we've ever seen.

This is amazing! I really feel bad for Houston fans. They thought they were gonna get Bush... one of the most exciting players in college FB. Then they get a defensive guy. Yeah, defense wins championships. But I don't see how anyone could pass on Bush.

Texans feel they just upgraded their defense immensely and they can come back in the second round and get a very good Olineman in McNeil or Mangold type... They have a good back in Davis.. They need line help on both sides and this is a huge step for them...

The draft is in turmoil now.. All GM's are contacting New Orleans to trade as New Orleans has Duece McCallister and will be waiting for the calls to start....Denver, Jets, Packers, 49's and on and on !!!

I think it was a pretty good move on the Texans part, because no one was going to trade up to number one this year and with the RB's they have, they will be ok. Their defense will be much improved right away with Super Mario and they will still be able to improve their o-line with their 2nd and 3rd round picks.

The Saints have to be looking to trade out of #2 bad. They dropped a big contract on Duece last year and I can't see them putting that much money into the RB position. I see them taking D'Brick if their are no trade partners. I think the Jets have to be loving this one if they are truly comfortable with Pennington !!!

WHODEY !!!

I like it and I don' like it.

I like that the Texans did not hesitate to hold thier ground when it came to contract timing as they had said they wanted a deal done in advance of the draft. They have LOTS of rebuilding to do and a contract hold-out would kill them even more.

I don't like that they took Williams. D'Brick is "AS GOOD" of a ball player, fills an even more drastic need and will have a longer/better career IMHO.

I predicted in my mock that SF would trade with HOU to get to Bush....Now that Bush is still there at two, and to stay true to my guess, SF will deal with NO to get to Bush....

2. SF (via NO) - Bush

3. TEN - Young

4. NYJ - D'Brick

5. GB - Hawk

6. NO (from SF)- Davis

7. OAK - Leinhart..grudgingly

SO FRIGGIN DUMB. this is going down as the dumbest draft move EVER!!!!!!!

Why is it so dumb? The Texans already had one of the top receiving backs in football. Now they get a physical freak that can play any position on the D-Line. This was a gift from God for the Saints, though.

Reggie Bush would make me forget Domanick Davis was ever born. This is what happens when you give a bunch of clowns 4 months to screw up a simple decision.

Agree 100%. Not that Super Mario is a bad move -- I like it better than Bush, frankly. But Houston's problem is its o-line, IMHO.

But that said, props to the Texans for a gutsy call. I think they did the right thing.

First thought...its really hard to believe that Mario is worth 50some million. Dont think the Texans will ever get their moneys worth on this one.

Also, looks like Bush's greed is going to cost him bigtime. Financially he's going to regret not being more signable.

Deuce is coming off a bad knee injury. This has got to make N.O. salivate. They should not trade this pick. Plus Bush will be happy when N.O. moves to L.A. in a couple of years.

:bengal:

Nature of the beast, IMHO. Bush isn't worth that money, either. It's virtually impossible for any top pick to live up to expectations nowadays.

Supposedly, the Texans think their O-line is fine. They have a zone blocking scheme and attributed the bad performance to mental errors and bad coaching instead of lack of talent. Alot of the same thing was said last year when everyone thought they should have drafted Alex Barron. Imagine if the would have drafted Barron last year (who is already a good right tackle for the Rams) and D'Brick this year. They could have been stacked.

First, let me say that I agree completely with your comments.

As to the Texans' supposed opinion of their o-line, all I can say is that if you and I had just one lousy ounce of whatever they are smokin'...we would be set for life!

To think about this move from an outsiders perspective... it is really good for the rest of the league. Not just for whoever gets Bush... but for everyone. Bush was demanding major cash, and his agent was dragging his feet, because he knew that the team has all the leverage until the player is actually drafted. Mario agreed to a deal that is much cheaper than Bush would have ever agreed to.

Therefore, when it comes down to the Bengals pick, the price should be significantly lower than if Bush had been selected with the #1 pick. Remember how much Alex Smith got last year, and all the teams were pissed because they knew that they'd have to shell out more cash to their draft picks? Well, Houston just taught Reggie a valuable lesson about not overestimating his own value, and gave the entire league a gift in the meantime.
