princeton
Denver gets the 37th and 68th selections in return for the 22nd overallMy guess is that the Bengals would be happy to make a similar trade. The difference between 24 and 37 doesn't look like much in this draft, but there'll be good value at
Stripes
I don't like to see bad teams trading away draft picks, such as the 49ers have done here. That's what they get for hiring a Ratbird to coach their team!I also would like to see the Bengals trade down. The deep talent pool in our positions of need makes this year a prime opportunity for such.
HoosierCat
Wow. That gives the Broncos 7 picks in the 1st four rounds. Nice deal. And the Niners get another 1st with which to reload. Good trade.
bengalboomer7
How many picks do the Broncos have now?Awful lot of picks for an AFC team coming off a conference championship game. I don't like that at all.

HoosierCat
Be interesting to see how this impacts the Bengals' draft. A lot of mockers have Verson Davis pencilled in to the Niners at 6, had the Broncos going offense (RB, WR or TE) at 22 -- thus being no competition for the Bengals -- and then the Niners going DE or DB early in the 2nd.If they now go DE or DB at 22, obviously they could snag someone the Bengals had their eye on...OTOH for all the Pope fans this likely increases the chances he's there at 24. ArmyBengal
I don't like the fact the 49er's gave up two picks for another 1st rounder due to the fact the draft is pretty deep in some defensive positions of need and the 49er's could have used those picks better, but then again, what the hell do I know it's just a hunch...I also don't like the fact that the 49er's may use the #22 on defense and would hate to see them draft a player we thought may have been there.Does the trade up rumor make more sense now ?? I'm not sure...WHODEY !!!
Stripes
I'd say trading down makes more sense now. If the 49ers rob us of one of the few worthy defensive prospects, then the top of the second round will suddenly look very good. Getting another third rounder out of the deal would be even better. Oh, don't get me wrong, I've mentioned trading down to get more day one picks (thus a TE becomes more appealing) for a while. The mention of a trade up rumor just has me thinking if the Bengals are targeting someone specific, would this now make this more of a possibility ??I still don't like the trade for many reasons, but it was good for the Broncos, make that GREAT for them !!!WHODEY !!! Yeah, I gotcha. I don't see Marvin setting his sights on any one player so much that he thinks trading up might be necessary or to the Bengals' benefit. The man loves his drafts picks, and so does TDB. That's why I think this trade sucks for San Fransisco. They need those first day picks more than Denver does. But you're right, Denver isn't likely to give a crap about any of that... They got a great deal.

If the Bengals are really in love with a particular DB or DE they may look to leapfrog SF. OTOH, the Niners draft strategy might change now that they have 22. With Pope almost certainly still on the board then, they could decide to go DE or DB (can u say Michael Huff?) at 6. In which case the threat level at 22 falls, tho they still might grab a DE. But they have to give Smith some weapons...don't they?In a related note, score one for Great Blue North. The site just did a trade-filled alternate mock yesterday, and via one of the scenarios the had the Niners with the 22nd pick! GBN gave them Santonio Holmes (and also has them taking Cromartie at 15).http://www.gbnreport.com/tradeprojection.html
princeton
I figure that Denver is going to move up from the 15th spot using those extra picks. Maybe for Vernon Davis?

HoosierCat
I figure that Denver is going to move up from the 15th spot using those extra picks. Maybe for Vernon Davis?Maybe...but if so, the 15th and the 22nd would have been more than enough value, per most draft pick trade value charts, to move up to 6, maybe even a spot or 2 higher.I think it may be more likely that the Broncos trade down from 15 on draft day. There was talk earlier this year that Denver was trying to unload its first round picks this year in return for picks in 2007, because they were so tight under the cap that they would have to cut vets in order to make room to sign their rookies. BTG
What if, and this is a big what if, but what if they trade both picks to the Texans and nab Reggie Bush? It's possible. I wouldn't do it, but it's possible.
Section 310
East Coast Sports updated their mock this afternoon as a result of the trade and had the Bengals selecting Thomas Howard LB, UTEP. They had SF going defense right in front of us at 22.

TecmoFever
This trade certainly doesn't help us at all, I don't like Denver getting more picks because they are already a good team in our conference that we have to play away from home, and I certainly do NOT want Thomas Howard, LB, from UTEP. Yeah, looking at that list you provided, the Davis / Simms combo seems like a winner to me !!!It gives A. It's hard to say which players they may be targeting, but they need everything on both sides of the ball. Alex Smith needs weapons at WR, RB, and TE and he could use more blockers too. The defense has a gaping hole at one CB position, they lost their two best LB'ers, and a scheme change muddies everything everywhere. My crystal ball says they go LB. HoosierCat
My crystal ball says they go LB.The guys at nfl smackdown and about.com agree. They are among the 9 mocks I've been tracking that have updated in the wake of the swap. They have Sims and Greenway, respectively, going to the Niners. Two other mocks have the Niners directly f**king the Bengals at 22. east coast sports had Wimbley going to us, while sportsline's Clark Judge had us taking Marcedes Lewis. Both now give those players to the Niners, and give us UTEP LB Howard and the ever-popular Nick Mangold, respectively.Of the other five, two have the Niners going RB at 22 (white and williams), 2 DE (lawson and kiwanuka) and 1 CB (hill). schweinhart
I'm going with Manny Lawson at #22 over Greenway. He should give Nolan the most options in the 3-4 if he can cover in short area at all because he can definitely rush the passer -- probably better than ever -- wider out of a 3-4.Sure looks like the Broncs have fancied themselves 1 of the top 2 WRs. But I'm doubting they get either at #15 and wind up with a 2nd option like Laurence Maroney. For all the ballyhoo about Super Mario being the lock #1 overall in the draft if there was no Reggie Bush (Texans Charlie Casserly) and the Saints urgent shift of Jammall Brown to LT to presumably lessen the need for an LT like D'Brick and make way for Mario, I'm not buying it yet and still will speculate that Mario winds up with the Niners at #6 instead of Vernon Davis. Sure, the Jets would consider Mario but not if they really think they got a future franchise QB on their hands with a pick at #4.
ArmyBengal
The guys around the office are thinking the 49er's are going to package their two 1st's to move up and get Bush. I could see Bush being a target of the 49er's, but that would be a lot to give up in order to move up and take a RB... I think the V. Davis / E. Simms combo would be big for them.WHODEY !!!
