oldschooler
Jeremi Johnson signs dealBY MARK CURNUTTE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITERThe Bengals today signed fullback Jeremi Johnson to a one-year contract.Johnson, a three-year starter, was tendered a one-year deal for $712,000. As a restricted free agent, Johnson could have signed an offer sheet with another team, and if the Bengals chose not to match it, the Bengals would have received a draft pick as compensation.Johnsons tender called for a draft-status pick, meaning the Bengals would have received a fourth-round pick for losing him.Instead, Johnson will be back for his fourth season with the Bengals. He plays a vital role as a selfless lead blocker in the run game and has been productive as a receiver. His 12 pass receptions last season included three for touchdowns.Running backs coach Jim Anderson said he would like to see Johnsons role expanded in the offense as a receiver and on short yardage. The Bengals have re-signed two of their four RFAs. Johnson joins offensive lineman Scott Kooistra as a returning player. Wide receiver Kelley Washington remains unsigned, and wide receiver Kevin Walter received an offer sheet from Houston that the Bengals chose not to match, so Walter is now with the Texans.Running back is a clear position of strength for the Bengals. Rudi Johnson has rushed for more than 1,450 yards in each of the past two seasons. Backup Chris Perry accounted for more than 600 yards as a receiver and runner in 2005. And the team re-signed valuable veteran free agent Kenny Watson to a one-year contract earlier this week.Jeremi Johnson has five career receiving touchdowns and one rushing in the NFL.He has started 30 games and played in all 48 possible since joining the Bengals. Also today, quarterback Carson Palmer said he has begun throwing. He continues to participate in workouts with teammates three months after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery to repair two damaged ligaments.Palmer is wearing a sturdy brace on the knee, and he jogged through the locker room this morning on his way to the weight room for a workout.http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art.../304130015/1066And an article from Hobson on the same topics...http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5196
Stripes
Good news on both accounts. I've been waiting to hear about Carson jogging, and here it is. Hobson keeps getting my hopes up that he'll be ready for week one, so he better not crush 'em later!
ArmyBengal
I'm not sure if this is me being apprehensive about the "jogging", but I read that to mean he jogged through the locker room, "on his way" to work out, but not jogging as in on a track or field for any period of time.Either way, it's more than good news and if anyone can clarify, I would like to hear more as I'm sure we all would !!!WHODEY !!! ShulaSteakhouse
Yeah the great news is he's apparently ahead of schedule, having no set-backs, and is on track to return approximately the 1st home game.Nice to see Jeremi back, one of the best young FB's in the NFL. (and his salary is starting to reflect it).I don't know if he'll be around for 2007 though, if he has a good season this year.
Larry
Bengals.com said they are working on a long term deal with JJ. Lets hope.
Stripes
Bengals.com said they are working on a long term deal with JJ. Lets hope. Agreed. I wanted more than a one year deal. He will probably keep improving, and I'd like to have him locked up before he gets too expensive for us.
ArmyBengal
I can't say as I'd mind having our FB wraped up for as long as Rudi at a minimum. It would be one less thing to worry about, but the o-line has got to get closer to being completed as well...WHODEY !!!
MacD BengalFan
This is all good news as it shows Carson is improving and just might be ready for the season opener. And signing Jeremy again adds to the stability of the team, limiting unnecessary turnover. This is something that wasn't happening until Marvin became coach. NYBengalfan
I liked how Jeremi decided to stay here for less money, it just shows that 1. He wants to win, and 2. He is a dedicated player to the organization.

HairOnFire
I hadn't thought much about the one-year deal because I wasn't all that certain about what the Bengals long-term plans for the FB position were. But based upon the comments made by his position coach and Rudi there's actually a possibility the position may get more attention....especially in the passing game. Nice, nice, nice. HoTbOy
Good news on both counts, glad that JJohnson decided to stay i think he is worth more than the pick we would've got...the CPalmer news was GREAT if true, when DCulpeper said he may miss season i thought about Carson... BengalszoneBilly
Yeah the great news is he's apparently ahead of schedule, having no set-backs, and is on track to return approximately the 1st home game.OMFG!!! Do you know what that implies!?! Carson Palmer is obviously carried on a better medical plan than the one Chris Perry had!
Stripes
More on Carson from bengals.com I'm sure Marvin is going to say we need to go into our bye 4-0," Palmer said Thursday after his weight-room workout. The guys we've added and with the draft, as long as we play well as a team, then it doesn't matter," Palmer said. "It's not about one individual player, or one position, as long as we're playing well as a team and we're coming out of training camp confident, we can go into that bye undefeated. It looks like the Bengals may be getting ready to resolve this backup quarterback thing one way or the other, and it may be Jamie Martin sooner than later since there is a thin quarterback draft crop. But Palmer admits he's selfish. He wants to be the guy Sept. 10 in Kansas City. But he says Krenzel (3-2 in NFL starts) has been in the system for a year and is comfortable enough and that Johnson (2-9) has been in enough offenses that he can pick up this one quickly enough to provide the Bengals with a comfortable quarterback. That's not the same sort of quote from Palmer or the Bengals I have gotten used to seeing this offseason. He seems to be acknowledging the possibility that he might not be back for week one, though he is still optimistic. I guess I'd rather him be realistic and honest during a Hobson interview than just blindly shout that he will be ready.
redsbengalsbucks
So far so good. This season FA maybe kind of slow and boring but I think the team has improved greatly by keeping the players that were good, getting rid of some dead weight and signing a couple of starters on D.
ArmyBengal
I'd say the FA has been very SOLID, getting two "solid" players for our defense, and signing two more "solid" players on the offense. While it might not be big and juicy, it's more than "solid" !!!WHODEY !!!
derekshank
I'm not sure if this is me being apprehensive about the "jogging", but I read that to mean he jogged through the locker room, "on his way" to work out, but not jogging as in on a track or field for any period of time.Either way, it's more than good news and if anyone can clarify, I would like to hear more as I'm sure we all would !!!WHODEY !!!You're right... this doesn't say that he is running yet. However, If he is jogging through the locker room unsupervised by trainers, my guess is that he has begun running on supervised. That would be dumb if he hasn't gotten the okay to run on it, but is jogging to a workout. He's smarter than that.I still say he'll miss a couple games... but the idea that he might be there for the opener is becoming more possible in my mind. ArmyBengal
As long as he doesn't rush it and reinjure it, I'll be ok... If it means he misses a couple games, just to make sure he's not rushing, then I'm ok with that to !!!WHODEY !!!
HairOnFire
I mentioned this in another thread, but Chad Johnson stated in his NFL Network interview that Palmer had started slow jogging. He quickly added that it was "very slow jogging"....but the implication was that it was indeed a scripted exercise program and not just an example of Palmer moving through the lockerroom at a brisk pace.
