BengalsDieHard1 Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 There hasn't been much talk on here about our need for a playmaking TE. (Yeah, I know I haven't posted for a while, I've been in remission since Carson's knee exploded.) Anyway, I know we need a big fat greek runstopping DT and smashmouth Fulcher type safety, but what about TE??? I'd give my left gonad for Vernon Davis if I had one......uhhh, sorry, that's my pup Robby, mine are still intact.....but Davis will definitely be gone by 24. Pope and Lewis seem to have huge upsides with their size and speed....but will they be available for our second round pick???...and will ML take that gamble?? I haven't really looked at the free agent TE market and from what I've heard it doesn't seem that impressive. Maybe trade down our 24th pick for a chance at Lewis or Pope????? Any thoughts on the matter???? Quote
HoosierCat Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Lots of good TE talent in the draft...but I have a hard time justifying a day 1 pick on a position the Bengals rarely utilize outside of the "extra lineman" role. Given the level of talent in the draft I have to think that's going to drive the cost of a FA TE down, and if they aren't going to make a big splash -- in other words, if they are going to stick to their normal strategy of spreading the money around versus going for one big-time FA -- then I wouldn't mind them going after Dan Campbell. Solid blocker and his hands are equal or better than Schobel's, IMHO. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I have to agree with Joisey on that one Quote
jbengals1 Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 We need a first day TE to take pressure of CJ, wether or not he is utilized just the thought will keep defences honest - as stated before i can see a caddy pulling up in cincinnati this april !!!!!!!!!! Quote
Kazkal Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 If davis is off board I'd risk trying get lewis or pope in 2nd if their both gone take best TE available in 3rd Quote
Spor_tees Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Having a god TE that can block AND catch will do so many things. Not only will opposing teams no longer know what type of play the Bengals are going to run (run or pass) by which TE is in the game (Kelly or Sherbert), but that also helps Carson AND Rudi because the defense has more indecision. A split second can go a long way on the football field. A good TE would also bring the Safeties up into coverage and allow more homerun balls to Chad...thus more endzone dances...thus more Bengal wins...thus more excitement! You would have to be un-American or a Steeler fan to not want all that to happen! Bunkley in the First, Pope, Fasanno, or Byrd in the Second! Who-Dey! Quote
ArmyBengal Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Agree with Joisey on this as well... Campbell isn't bad at all, but I still think unless we trade down to pick up an additional day one pick, I'd like to see all defense addressed rounds 1-3. How much of an impact will a TE do for an offense that can put up points at will already when our defense still sucks rhino balls ?? Don't give me that SH*T about our defense doesn't suck either. "WHEN AND IF" we address our defnsive line issues and they show it on the field, then I'll consider saying we don't suck. This sounds like a broken record, we have been having the same conversation about our defense now for the three off seasons I've been on this site. With Clemons being gone now, I can't see us not going hard for the D-line. C'mon Marvin build the D, build the D !!!DE-FENSE DE-FENSE !!!WHODEY !!! Quote
TJJackson Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Pope is lacking in the blocking department despite excellent size.Fasano is the best three down TE in the draft, and we should take him if he falls to us in r3.As far as a FA TE, my pick would be Jeb Putzier formerly of the Broncos Quote
TJJackson Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Another TE off the marketfrom kfflBills | Royal agrees to a five-year dealSat, 11 Mar 2006 13:06:54 -0800Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Buffalo Bills have reached agreement with free agent TE Robert Royal (Redskins) on five-year, $10 million deal that includes a $2.5 million signing bonus. Kochman Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 I want Shea. He is a solid blocker with good hands. He used to be the Browns H-Back before they got Terrell Smith. I think he would be a big upgrade over Kelly at the H-back role, He is more of an offensive threat.{when we go to the no huddle}. Quote

derekshank Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Joisey's got the right idea. Lots of talent in the draft equals a cheaper FA market. My preference would be Manumalena out of St. Louis. They seem to be looking in the draft for a TE... Manumalena is a great blocker(a lot like another lineman)... and ever bit as good a pass catcher as Schobel. If we can land him, we can focus completely on the D in the draft. Quote
