Stripes
Oh, silly Hobson, trying so hard to make news of nothing... Reminds me of B/Sing an essay on a history test. Nothing? Nothing??? Come on, man, we're talking specifics here (generally speaking, of course)! They're meeting to set strategies! And don't forget we've got Jamie Martin coming in today, too! Yessiree, busy, busy, busy... Oh yeah, the teapot's really whistlin' now! Washington and Cleveland just don't know how to pace themselves, they'll be pooped out by the draft! membengal
All the names we've been talking about for the last two months or more are dropping like flies.Yup. Other teams sign players, while the Bengals (per Hobson today):plan to get more specific with their [the safeties who have visited so far] agentsWell, that's good. Glad to hear they're getting into specifics. At this rate, I'm sure they'll be able to knock out a first offer by, oh, end of the week, maybe next Monday latest? Also on their plate today, per Geoff, is to:set a strategy with the reported signing of restricted free agent Kevin Walter in Houston.Busy, busy, busy, eh? I guess no one thought to ask a crazy question like, what do we do if our RFAs get offered, before FA began, but now that it's happpened it's good to see they're right on top of it. Time too schedule a meeting. Develop a strategy. Order in some LaRosa's.Joisey, this off-season, I am with you. Now that the team finally made the leap that a lot of us thought possible, it's time to try something a little different in free agency, and it is already clear that they will not.To clarify...when they were around .500 (or just trying to get there), I thought the best move was to develop from within, and not hamstring the future budgets trying to get to mediocre or just above. BUT, now that they are at a 9-12 win level, NOW is the time to get the key pieces you need and make a run at it in the next 3-5 years. That's what teams at this level do. Or are supposed to do. This kind of sitting around bitching about how expensive it is to do business has no place for a team trying to make the final leap. This really does piss me off. Like I noted elsewhere, all the tea leaves said that it was going to be (non)business as usual. And you have to admit it's been good for a couple laffs, like having their "big first signing" Sage Rosenfels taken down by Houston before he even got to town. And then just clicking on bengals.com to see a big picture of...Jamie Martin!!! Hooboy...gotta love dem Bengals!

HairOnFire
Not to rub salt in an open wound, but maybe you guys should come to grips with the way the Bengals approach free agency. Most of you know their habits well enough to bitch about free agency before it even starts, so why not accept the merits of their strategy and adjust your emotions accordingly? Or do you really believe that the Bengals are going to pocket their available money instead of spending it? No, you know better than that, don't you? Yet the bitching and moaning always comes, right on schedule, before FA even starts, and continues even after the Bengals cross from their shopping list everything they told you they were after. Backup QB. One or two 2nd tier veteran defenders. Contract extensions for their own offensive lineman. They even tell you right upfront that they probably won't be active early. So why the gnashing of teeth? Is constantly gnashing your teeeth more fun than it seems? Perhaps I should give it a try. Is it time to panic yet? Is it time to panic yet? Is it time to panic yet? That's awesome.I think most of the fans (myself included) would like to see the Bengals bring in a big name player for once. Seriously, when I was younger I was excited because they signed Ashley Ambrose.... Ambrose coming to Cincy was a big deal to me. That's pathetic. All I really want, this year is a player who can come in and make an immediate impact. if that's Dexter Jackson, so be it, but these"projects" with "potential" have not exactly worked out well in the past. Think of some of the recent signees:Tory JamesJohn "Stool Pidgeon" ThorntonBryan RobinsonNate WebsterCarl PowellDuane ClemonsIfeanyi Ohalate Kim HerringI mean, do I need to go on? How many of those players have made impacts? Granted, Tory is a pretty good player, but he's far from elite. He'd be the third or fourth defensive back on most teams. Bryan Robinson? He's really not that good. He's the type of player you'd like to have subbing in for your star DT for a few plays.(On the flip side of that, you have the draft. You could argue that the Bengals have drafted better than any other team in the last four or five years. I really have no point here. Just rambling/venting.)I guess what I'm trying to say is if you want potential stars, look to the draft. If you want to make the leap, look for a PROVEN impact free agent or two. He was a role player for Oakland's defense. Kim Herring was coming off a year where he literally played zero downs of football. Those guys were both role players. I'm talking about a big name player who would create a buzz around Bengaldom and could come in and dominate.

Had we signed Sapp, people would have complained because we overpaid him, especially when he sucked. No matter who we sign, there will be whiners. The only buzz around here is whining. With the signing of Jackson and there being no chance of getting another safety in FA, can we consider this topic CLOSED ???WHODEY !!!What makes you think there is no chance of getting another safety? ArmyBengal
Why not another safety in FA ?? With the looming offer sheet for Walter, the backup QB situation, the possible extensions for the O-line, and the fact we just signed one, I think we are done for safety in FA. Now the draft is another story. I say we still draft another safety, but no more in FA. I could be wrong however...WHODEY !!!

I don't mind the rambling. It proves you know what the strategy is. My question is why so many of you are so quick to blow a forehead screaming for things the Bengals don't have on their shopping list. It's not like they're saying one thing while doing another. Sheesh, they lay it right out there. A cheap backup QB. One or two 2nd tier defenders at positions of need. Any big money tossed around will very likely fall at the feet of their own offensive lineman. And if enough of their own guys don't bite...maybe they'll engage in some very late shopping. There it is. Everyone please adjust your foreheads to match the plan. And while you're at it....mark off one of the items on the shopping list. (2nd tier defender at a position of need.)
