andybren
I'm just glad this debate is even occuring. When's the last time the Bengals brought in a stud FA, even a year or two after his prime? Who M*****F***in' Dey!

derekshank
I know a lot of people want Milloy... but chances are that his name will carry a big price tag. He would probably be worth it... but we really do seem to be getting younger and younger... and this would be a step in the opposite direction. My bet is that we don't land him.But by the looks of it... we will continue to use FA simply as a means of getting depth... and use the draft as a means of getting starters. Not a bad strategy in my mind... but we damn well better use all that cap money to extend Chad and our O-Line if we aren't going to land any notable FA's.I could be wrong though. Lance Schulters and Idrees Bashir are still out there... and would probably play just fine, and not carry that big name recognition price tag. Milloy is only 32, so if you are going by age you should just X both of them out. But we can't settle for an average safety. We tried that, and the guy got hurt. And the other guy just flat out sucked ass. You need to go for the best, someone who is truly dominate. I realize Milloy is old, but he still plays like he is young, and is one of the best safeties in the league. We have $7.5 million, it is time to spend some of it. The Bengals made it clear that they will not spend a lot of money on a back up QB(which is smart),and there are no real good DTs out there, except for Adams who will prob land in Miami. So, instead of letting that money waste, go out and sign a stud. Can't settle for average anymore, you gotta go for the best.Milloy will probably be cheaper then you think considering he is pretty old and in general older players wouldSacrifice Money for Winning since he most likly has enough Money to retire right now if he wanted besides a 3yr 8 mil deal with 3-4 mil up front would not be bad. we would still have enough to sign a backup and extend our O-linemenExcatly. We have $7.5 mill to spend on FA(we prob. won't even spend it all), the other 9.1 million go toward our O-line and Rooks, plus whatever remains from the FA money. I wasn’t attempting to claim that Lance Schulters was a spring chicken… rather he’s just more the kind of guy the Bengals would be willing to sign. He won’t cost top-dollar like Milloy will (and before you claim he will be willing to take a pay-cut… we all know from just a couple years ago that Milloy does care about money. He won his championship with NE, and is probably looking for one last pay day)So, you can lecture all day long about how signing Milloy really makes sense when you look at the numbers… but it goes against two fundamental principles the Bengals have abided by since Marvin took over… that is building through the draft, and using FA only to fill short-term holes and establish depth. This was the point of my previous post.Milloy is old, and there is no guarantee that he has several more years to give. Also, he is the biggest name out there are far as safeties go… so guys like Bashir and Schulters are more the Bengals speed if we are looking to fill a hole until a younger draft pick can take over. We always get guys like Kim Herring instead of guys like Milloy. This may not be sexy… but it is what you do when you are building through the draft. So give me all the financial figures you want, and the logic to back it up as to why we should sign Milloy. Hell, you might even convince me that it’s a good idea. My only point is that it’s never gonna happen. It’s not our style… and if it was, I’d prefer a big name DT. A starting safety would be easier to come by in the draft.

TJJackson
I do still want to see the Bengals get a good DT in FA. My flavor of the moment is Seattle's Rocky Bernard. The Bengals do not have a good history of finding or developing good DTs, so imho, we need to get one in FA. I'm all for drafting one as well, but it is time to find someone who can step right in and fill in the gap (literally) for a while while we continue to try out the Askews and Fanenes. He had 8.5 sacks last year... and that is huge for a DT. In my opinion, our biggest need on the D-Line is a pass rush. Our rushing defense is actually not as bad as most people think... and if we could get a decent pass rush, opposing offenses would not be able to score nearly as easily. Unfortunately, we don't appear to really be in the mix for any of the premier DT's right now.

I would love to have him, but the negative side to Bernard is that is sucks against the run. He also needs to be consistant. He didn't have one sack in any of the last 5 games of the year last year.I wish friggn Hobson would update the site to let us know how the visits went today

Another year in Bengaldom. If they can't bring in Milloy, I'd really like to see them take a look at Charles Woodson. He could be moved to safety if need be and shouldn't demand too high a salary thanks to his injury problems the last few years. If they are able to sign him for around two or three million a year for three or four years, the potential reward could well be worth the risk. Think about it, he's going to be really motivated to prove himself after a few sub-par years and this is a guy who was one of the best in the league a few years ago. He still has the talent, and if he can stay healthy he'll have a monster year. Let's also not forget he's an Ohio kid & has ties to Chuck Bresnahan. I wouldn't mind signing him for a fair price, but I honestly don't see it... Injuries or not, he's a Heisman winner and has been considered among the cornerbacking elite since he entered the league, at least by a lot of folks. I imagine he'll come with quite the price tag.A guy to think about for safety who could be cheaper due in part to injury is Will Demps of Baltimore, as mentioned in the thread title. HoosierCat
All the names we've been talking about for the last two months or more are dropping like flies.Yup. Other teams sign players, while the Bengals (per Hobson today):plan to get more specific with their [the safeties who have visited so far] agentsWell, that's good. Glad to hear they're getting into specifics. At this rate, I'm sure they'll be able to knock out a first offer by, oh, end of the week, maybe next Monday latest? Also on their plate today, per Geoff, is to:set a strategy with the reported signing of restricted free agent Kevin Walter in Houston.Busy, busy, busy, eh? I guess no one thought to ask a crazy question like, what do we do if our RFAs get offered, before FA began, but now that it's happpened it's good to see they're right on top of it. Time too schedule a meeting. Develop a strategy. Order in some LaRosa's.
