Safety Mega-thread

I read this review of Jackson on Scout.com

Dexter Jackson UFA Buccaneers – Once considered one of the better free safeties, Jackson spent half of the 2004 season on injured reserve due to a back injury. He was released then rejoined Tampa Bay to finish out the season. At his best, he’s an instinctive safety who has a good feel for the position. However, his man-to-man cover skills are lacking which is why he needs to play in a cover-2 scheme.

A couple things of concern here. Firstly... he's a FS. We need a SS. Secondly... he has trouble with man-to-man coverage. Wasn't this the biggest problem with Ohalete? Something tells me this guy is not the answer to our safety problems... since we don't play a cover-2.

Another S snapped up...this time Archuleta's replacement:

Rams | Chavous signed to five-year deal

Sat, 11 Mar 2006 11:59:32 -0800

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the St. Louis Rams have signed free agent S Corey Chavous (Vikings) to a five-year contract. Complete financial terms were not disclosed, but he will average about $4 million a year for the first three years of the contract. Counting bonuses and base salary, Chavous' compensation for the 2006 season will be between $6 million and $7 million.

Pretty sizeable deal for a safety...

Better idea...

Bengals | Demps will visit team Saturday

Sat, 11 Mar 2006 11:14:47 -0800

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports free agent S Will Demps (Ravens) will visit with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, March 11.

He's supposed to go on to Minny Sunday. I say: don't let him get on that plane.

Jackson would potentially free up the draft, allowing the Bengals to either pass on selecting a safety altogether or draft a lower rater player who could step in later rather than sooner. Face it, this is a playoff team right now and signing a safety with experience makes sense. The move would also allow the Bengals to put a bullet in Kim Herrings left ear.

What you'd expect Joisey. This is free agency and the Bengals don't play this game very well. Even though now I found out this couldn't happen, but this is exactly why I wanted a labor deal AFTER free agency. Now, instead of competing with 6-10 teams, the Bengals are competing with 32 and everyone knows how Cincy gets used for leverage.

I would LOOOOOVVVVE to wee Will Demps in stripes

I'm all for signing a safety but IMHO Jackson is at best a marginal upgrade over Ohalete, and his only good point vs. Herring is that he'd probably be hurt less. Gimme Demps and I'm a happy camper.

Herring would be a good backup.

Sign Demps or Jackson. Get Madieu healthy. Keep Herring and KK as backups.

Then draft the next generation of CB's.

BTW, add McCree to the list...

Curnette:

Since 3:15 p.m. today, agents for former Buffalo safety Lawyer Milloy and former Carolina safety Marlon McCree confirmed that their clients will be visiting Cincinnati.

Of the remaining safeties, McCree is the one I am most interested in....far and away better than the other candidates

However....count it up.....all these safeties are visiting....

W Demps

L Milloy

D Jackson

M McCree

Any one of these would be a good signing for Cincinnati depending on the money and the role...McCree as a starter, Milloy as a veteran backup who could help develop the rookie we'd draft high.

It's clear from this list that Marvin is as serious as it gets about upgrading at safety this year. Have you ever heard of so many players at one position coming for a FA visit to Cincinnati? all at once? Outstanding!

I think this also all but guarentees we will take a safety no later than r2 in the draft.

Interesting that there's no word on Chris Hope.

Scout.com has him as the #4 safety, while Demps and Jackson are #10 and #12.

Incidentally, they've got Ohalete and Mitchell as #14 and #15.

I think this also all but guarentees we will take a safety no later than r2 in the draft.

I think the pick will be for a CB, assuming a good one is available.
