schroomytunes
This is just my opinion but here is my key goals and targets for the 2006 offseason. In order for us to gain more flexability we need to release a few players so this is where I'll start:1)John Thornton-saves us 2million in cap room and can be easily replaced by the free agent market and the strong group of DT in the draft.2)Duane Clemons-cap hit of 1.350million and hardly played last year, he wont be missed.Total savings=3.35million + the 4-5 million we already have = @ 8million for free agents.I then look at the free agents that are available, and ask what is our biggest areas of need and can we address them wisely and economically. So here goes:1)I avoid big name free agents like the plague, and instead focus on building through the draft with emphasis on getting better overall depth.2)On to the FREE AGENTS:-I like Lance Legree(NYJ) he can play DE/DT and gets inside pressure and has good size 6'1 305 for the DL he provides a replacement for Carl Powell at @ 2yr 2 million.-I also like Sage Rosenfels(MIA) he can be a viable young backup who knows his role and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to be surrounded by this offense. He can be had for @ 3yr 2.9million.-then I would use Marvins influence and land big Sam Adams, he's a 330lb guy who can clog the middle and take pressure off our lb's he would sign here at a reasonable price at @ 2yr 3million.3) sign the OL to extentions:-both Levi and Steinbach must be signed to extentions so we need to save some $ for them.4) THE DRAFT-after having addressed some needs on the DL, we can now look at other areas in the draft.1st rd) Ashton Youbouty-(CB), he learns the system for a year and maybe even replaces T.James a year earlier than expected.2nd rd) Ko Simpson(S)- I think he will drop into the 2nd round and he will team nicely with Madieu in the secondary, if he's gone then I go Greg Blue(S)3rd rd) Joel Klopfenstein(TE)-we get Kelly's eventual replacement and a guy that can come in on 3rd down passing situations in the red zone.4th rd) Fred Matua(G)-we get some depth on the OL to replace either Braham or Williams in 07.5th rd-7th rd) focus on best available players regardless of positions that's my offseason wishes. Whur CHad At?
If Ko Simpson drops to the second round, he won't fall to the Bengals. And I would say no to Greg Blue, we have to avoid him at all costs. I like Youbouty, but I don't like takin him in the first. Either big Ko or a DLineman will prob. be selected with the pick. But with Marvon...you never know
turningpoint
there's better then youbouty at #24, out of the corners especially since he came into the combine only 5'11.
NYBengalfan
I like the Idea of Lance Legree, I saw him play and he is a sleeper. But I would like Kiawanuka from BC in the 1st round.
bengalboomer7
Don't doubt Youboty. OSU has a history of bringing out good corners, especially ones that can tackle
TecmoFever
I totally agree with the FA's. I'm not so sure I'd like Youboty, though I would like saying that name. If we got Ko Simpson in the 2nd round, I'd ecstatic. Overall, I like the plan, especially Rosenfals and Adams. Those are the two names I've been throwing around for the last week and nobody's with me.
TJJackson
I still prefer Arizona's Josh McCown as our FA qb signee, if Kitna is dead set on not returning (which is 99.9% certain, but I like my last shred of hope that God will tell him - "oh wait, I meant stay with the Bengals")

ArmyBengal
Rosenfels wouldn't bother me that much. Come to think of it, I like him more than Kitna, so bring him on !!! WHODEY !!!
TJJackson
McCown is not a bad qb....check out his career stats...and keep inmind what kind of supporting cast he has had, particularly on the OLHe's also the same model of qb as Carson....big, strong arm, decent mobility.I don't think this guy expects to start anywhere he goes, BUT would he not jump at the chance to run the Cincinnati offense, behind the awesome cincinnati OL, for the first 6-8 games of the season while Carson is still recovering? Put yourself in those shoes, and think on it

Put yourself in those shoes, and think on it I get what you are saying, but I can't see the Bengals organization throwing money at QB only to have him disgruntled in his backup role for the next few years and then leave. McCown would be my first choice, but don't see it happening, that's all... WHODEY !!!
TecmoFever
I've been plugging McCown for a while, but I, too, don't see him wanting to jump in line behind a perennial All-Pro for years to come (assuming the leg's gonna be all right). I do think that Rosenfals may realize that he's not a starter in this league. Therefore, it's more plausible that we could get Rosenfals to come here. TJJackson
I guess that's where our opinions differ...I think McCown would willingly accept a backup role in Cincinnati wherea) it is LIKELY he'll see playing time this year, and even better, some starts early as Carson needs time to recover still he has a chance to show what he can do with a much, MUCH better offense around him, ala "here's how good I would have been had we had a decent offense in Arizona"So yeah, it comes down to me believing he'd want to come here and others thinking he is looking for a place where he can start. Stripes
thank god, we don't have to talk about him anymore. I think we could work out a trade with the Rams and still get him! Maybe send Madieu and Odell to them, with our second round pick.

Once again, I see where you are going, but once he's under contract and Carson comes back, then what ?? He's no longer the starter and he's back to square one, a backup. You can't believe the Bengals are just going to let him walk because he proved something to the rest of the league in regards to his starter "potential"... Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have him as well, but just don't see it happening...WHODEY !!!

Maybe more if the injury doesn't heal - maybe even the entire seasonCarson has not had a full year uninjured yet, so he'd likely get starts in other years as well. After playing well in these starts, 2-3 years down the line, he'd be in line for a HUGE day on the FA market. So that's why I can see it happening. He wants a chance to prove he is a legit QB, and would get that chance in Cincinnati

I believe some of you think it is a big secret that he has played pretty well behind Arizona's O-Line. People this one is not going to happen. He is going to get paid starter money by somebody and with Carson's new contract among other things it WILL NOT be us. That is nice wishful thinking, I would love to have him as our number 2, but it simply just won't happen.
walshfan
So are we down to guys like Patrick Ramsey ( good arm but TD-INt ratio is mediocre) Jay Fieldler ( another smart guy but weak arm ), or possibly dare I say it Jeff Blake ( dont really want him back but what other options are there ?)
Stripes
I wouldn't object to the Patrick Ramsey idea, but I don't expect the Bengals to be in the running for him either. He has a good arm, and is talented enough to succeed behind our o-line and with our talent at the skill positions.
walshfan
There really isnt any strong armed QB's aside from Ramsey that would make defenses respect the deep game out there in free agency is there?
