semiotter
Well im almost a half a century old now and it isnt really that hard for me to pick the"GREATEST" team of my time here on earth. No doubt its the 1970 Baltimore Orioles, hands down the "Greatest " team from top to bottom ive ever seen. They had it all Pitching, fielding and batting. They had a great Manager in Earl Weaver and this club was unstopable. Check this out!!!!!!!! Their record was a amazing "108-54", thats a winning % of .667 wow!!!! This was done against teams with the likes of the greatest players playing in the modern era of baseball. Players such as Tony Oliva,Frank Howard, Harmon Killerbrew, Carl Yas., Catfish Hunter, Micky Lolich, Jim Perry etc.etc. you get the idea. Lets see they had three golden glove players Davey Johnson(2b), Brooks Robinson(3b),and Paul Blair(cf). Brooks is the and will be the greatest 3b of all time. No one ever played 3b like him I can still see the REDS throwing up the hands in anguish (Bench) after some of the plays he made against them in the WWS. Paul Blair would play so shallow and dare players to hit over his head, no could go back on a hit ball like him. The Pitching had (2) 24 game winners on the staff Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally and Jim Palmer won 20 and these guys could pitch. this was a time when the pitcher would go 7 , 8 innings all the time. The the Division playoffs they drilled the TWINS 3-0. And that set up the great battle against the BIG RED MACHINE...The REDS with a impressive reccord of 102-60 were unstoppable in the N.L. they destroyed every team in its path they were loaded with great players such as Johnny Bench, Lee May, Tony Perez, Pete Rose, Bobby Tolan, Hal McRae, Tommy Helms, Dave Concepion, Don Gullett, Clay Carroll and many more. This could very easliy be the best team ive seen but for one thing, they didnt beat the "ORIOLES" that year in WWS. The Os went on to win in 5 games and made there mark in history as the best team of the 70s and for all time. So if and when you bring on your team to try and beat this club (you know they cant) bring some good ammo cuz they will need it.( oh and I guess you can tell im a ORIOLE fan). bengalboomer7
Sadly, I go with the 80's Niners. Montana, Rice, Craig, Romanowski, Lott, Bill Walsh. Tough team all the way. That's in my lifetime, I guessBest team ever, you could make a case for the Big red machine. Rose, Bench, Perez, Morgan, and the lot. redsfan2
Orioles had a fine team and there's no disputing that. Having said that .... I still have to go with thee one and only ............ Big Red Macihine. They were called that for a reason. Yanker fans were hooting a couple of years back when the Yanks broke the record for wins in a season. None of them seemed to notice it was due to an extended post season. And you probably guessed that I'm .... a Reds fan .... too
skyline
I'm not going to say they were the best, but I loved the Michael Jordan Bulls team that set the single-season record for wins. They were so much fun to watch...
Ox
1996-7 UK Wildcats national champions. I swear there's no team in the history of college basketball that equaled that Rick Pitino teams talent. They were freaks of nature.
bengalboomer7
Which team is that OX, not the Mercer team? You're joking right, I know your a UK homer and I'm sure you know I'm a UK hater. So, none of UCLA 10 championship teams aren't better. Even though they didn't win the big one, wasn't the fab five better? Even though I hate them too, what about the Dukies with Jason Williams, Dunleavy, Boozer, and co.I'm just pickin on ya cause you put a UK team up there, As a mod, I feel it's my duty to not allow that kind of language around here
Ox
All I'm saying is that there is no team that comes to mind that had as much TALENT as UK did that year. I mean their entire starting lineup is still in the NBA right now. Hell, their walk-on's would have been full scholarship players at most schools. Pitino willingly gave up the chaampionship the next year (97-98) by not playing Derek Anderson in the finals v. Arizona. Those teams should have been back to back to back champions. No wonder you hate the big blue! It's alright though. The LAST thing I'ma do nowadays is run UK smack. We suck this year.
BengalszoneBilly
Since this is the BASEBALL forum, I take this to mean the greatest MLB baseball team. The 1975-76 World Series winning Cincinnati "Big Red Machine" hands down! They played far better teams then those old Yankee teams did, (Honestly back in that era there was just 3-4 quality teams in the league.) and they did it in a small $$$ market unlike the New Yankees team did. There wasn't an easy hitter to pitch to in the entire lineup, with the exception of the pitcher, and sometimes even he wasn't an easy out either!! semiotter
I wish you could put your team in a computer against my Oriole (1970) team just for fun to see the out come. But I know they both were GREAT teams. And yes I did mean baseball teams but I didnt say that at the beginning ,but Ilike all the other coments the guys made for football and basketball. But seeing as how American League pitchers aren't enough of a man like every other player has to be to hit for themselves and puss out for a DH (reminds you a lot of kid's playing sandlot football using that cheesy "steady quarterback" rule doesn't it?) to do it for them, I cannot take any AL team seriously. Get rid of the gimmick DH rule, then come talk to me.And this ain't a "hate N.Y. thing" either. The Mets play real ball, and I got no problem with them. Their World Series Win in '69 was an awesome thing to watch!
NYBengalfan
But you talk about them not hitting for themselves...... true, I was a pitcher in HighSchool.... a damn good one I might add! But I always hit for myself.... but thats beside the point I am trying to make. How come pitchers that Pitched in the NL come over to the AL and are struggling. They are facing tougher lineups. For example, great pitchers when they were in the NL Carl Pavano, Javier Vasquez and Kevin Brown, they didnt do squat when they switched leagues. The AL has the toughest lineups in all of Baseball. Therefore AL pitchers face harder lineups than NL pitchers. The NL pitchers face 8 man batting orders, there's that one automatic out!To me pitchers have to be mentally tough to be successful. It is much easier with that automatic out in the NL, it kills rallies, gives pitchers confidence. AL pitchers dont get that break. Look at how when Clemens went to the NL he tore s**t up with his sub two ERA. Rocket was a great pitcher anyway, but that automatic out made him that much better. That automatic out helps a lot!I dont see it as an I hate NY thing. It is an I hate the Yankees thing. Its a lot of people in this country. I may love our bengals in football, but I was born and bred a Yankee fan. Im a hometown boy as far as baseball.....NYY season ticket member since 1990. BengalszoneBilly
That automatic out helps a lot! That "out" isn't always as automatic as one might think. Randy Johnson, (while pitching out here in Arizona for the D-backs) was always a threat with the bat. Especially with men in scoring position!I dont see it as an I hate NY thing. It is an I hate the Yankees thing.I don't hate the Yank-me's, (a silly name ingrained in me from a previous room mate who was a Mets fan through and through) I hate the DH. But considering the overall way I feel about the game right now, it's definitely one of the lesser hates I'm holding. There's at least 4 to 5 others above the minor DH.Sad. I used to LIVE for baseball. Now?
NYBengalfan
Im just "Yankin" ur chain BB, truthfully i dont like the DH either, I was just backin the league My team was in. I was a pitcher as well, and would hate it when my coach would have a DH for me........ Especially because a f**kin Red Sox player won MVP( David Ortiz) because he was just as good a hitter as my boy A-Rod who was a by far better all around player than him.In my opinion they should make 2 awards: Most Valuable Hitter and MVPAnd I agree, baseball used to be my favorite sport to watch.... but Steroids ruined the integrity of the game.....it is very sad.If you think about it, Its kinda like all of the cheaters slapped all of the greats of the past that never used steroids. its like picturing,( Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Canseco, Palmiero and others) slapping Greats like (Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Bench, Maris, Jackson, etc.) RIGHT IN THE FACE!!! and then SPITTING ON THEM while theyre on the floor. There is no integrity and respect for the game and all of the greats whoever put on the uniform.NO RESPECT AT ALL!!!!!!!! The one true hitter that I respect of my time has to be one of my all time favorites.....Ken Griffey Jr.he earnes his home runs and every other stat he gets. bengalboomer7
I'd of voted for Papi as MVP last year just based on clutch. He had like 20 game winning hits last year, and even you probably can't defend the choke artist that is A-Rod. THne again, maybe you can

Stripes
Best baseball team ever?First, I hope nobody says any team from the 50s or before, because none of those great teams would fare well in the least in the modern game.I'll give the title to any of these three (that come to mind immediately)... '75/'76 Reds, '98 Yankees, '70 Orioles.

'75/'76 Reds, '98 Yankees, '70 Orioles. This conversation comes up every so often .... not only in baseball, but all sports. Ali couldn't have beaten Joe Louis etc etc etc ad nauseum.Rather than debate the point, try looking at a few alternatives. ( for baseball only of course )Take away the DH. Put 3 inches back on the pitching mound .... and make the pitchers pitch 9 innings ... yep No relievers or closers. Make the distance to the wall in all ballparks that which is called for in the rules books. ( No 3' walls either ). Get rid of those " golf ball " baseballs that go an extra 50 or 60 feet. Go back to " standard ' lenght and weight for bats too. Shorten the season and post season to original. No wildcards. Make all the teams take trains for their out of towners. and last but not least get all the players off steroids. There ....... Now that they are playing under the same set of rules and conditions ..... Let them play. I'd say that there are plenty of players and teams from that era that would flourish against todays teams. I'll grant you that todays players are bigger, stronger, & better conditioned than those of yesteryear. Having said that though the numbers in todays games are inflated due to all the items I mentioned above. The 40's, 50's, and to some extent the 60's ( thanks to Mantle and Marris ) were a quantum leap from the 1900's to the late 20's.I think it's be great to see not only the modern day guys play in the old style, I'd also like to see how the " Old Gize " would benefit from all the " advances ". Bet it would not only be entertaining .... but surprising too. Griffey had a chance to heft one of Ruths' bats and said something to the affect that he wouldn't even think of trying to use it in a game because he didn't want to pull a muscle. Said it was like swinging a telephone pole.

The 1976 team ranks up there with the all time greatest teams ever. If they had better "name" starting pitching, they might be the best ever. Although a staff with Nolan, Gullett, Norman and Billingham was still pretty impressive.I think the Oakland A's of the early 70's should be considered up there as well. While their best known players were Fingers, Reggie and Catfish, they won a lot of games and three titles between 1971 and 1976 when free agency broke them up.In football, I think it is a toss up between the early 70's Dolphins and the rest-of-that decade Steelers.
