  1. I am as big a fan as anyone of Odell Thurman the DROY candidate at MLB.

Since then (possibly earlier, but at least since then) Odell has had a substance abuse problem severe enough that even when he was cleared to practice, Marvin did not allow him to....now, several weeks later, he has shown clearly that his statement that he was going to clean up his act ws just a sham, a lie. Put yourself in marvin's shoes - can you in the salary cap era continue to keep a player on your team who eats salary cap but cannot be relied upon to get on the field due to an inablity to stop drinking and/or abusing substances? For my part, the answer is no - once I deal with the anger and frustration of the loss, I move on and start over with another new player. I also don't waste practive snaps getting the fellow ready to play - I save them for players I can count on.

This is what Marvin did - he brought in Ahmad Brooks, and limited Odell's practice time.

    Marvin has moved on.

The main thing Marvin will have to deal with is the others who were in the car with Odell. Going out and drinking with Odell Thurman is a bad, bad idea; and he will make sure they know that in no uncertain terms.

To answer an earlier statement: yes, he is needed. His presence would have helped a lot this year. Would have, could have. No doubt. But you have to get on the field to help. He won't get back on the field this year. Next year, maybe - but almost assuredly (barring injury) it'll be with another team...plenty of teams out there who will be willing to give him a second chance (and a protective incentive-laden contract) because of his ability on the field.

  2. i believe this is why they took brooks this year

To replace Odell? Your crazy man, sthu! He was up for Defensive Rookie of the year dog, doesn't mean anything. Just b/c he hasn't played for 3 games I guess he sucks now. If we cut Odell, do you think he'll go to another team and suck, NOT! HE's a beast and he'll go to another team and blow up even more.

Yes, he is a beast....if he can get onto the field......but right now I'd say he might well never see the field again. In two weeks, he was going to be eligible to rejoin the team, yet he couldn't even keep himself clean (or at least pay a ~20 dollar cab fare) for that short a time.

Marvin has in fact written him off because he cannot trust that Odell will make it onto the field due to ongoing substance abuse problems. That was never more evident than when Marvin did not allow Odell to practice at the start of camp even though he was eligible to do so.

He's done here. I don't like it, but there it is.

The easy thing to do then is ask.....why hasn't Marvin made the same decision with Chris Henry. Two things, one factual and one speculation

    1) Fact: league rules are much harsher re: substance related issues than they are for most of Henry's offenses (other than, of course, the DUI in Clermont County). Much more likely that a regular substance abuser will get suspended than someone performing other criminal offenses.

    2) Speculation: I think Odell's substance issues problems are far more severe than anyone (including Odell) has admitted to, but I think marvin knows how bad the situation is

  3. I was unable to watch this game due to a family committment, so I have a few questions that hobson's summary did not help me with

    1) How did Ghiaciuc do, overall?

    2) I heard Levi went out and Whitworth came in as left tackle....tackle, not guard.....how did this work out? At what point in the game did this occur? Did Levi return?

    3) How did Kenny Watson look returning kicks in Tab's place?

    4) Was Graham putting kickoffs in the endzone or outside the 5?

  4. Can't cut Johnson til you know McNeal can run the offense as the emergency QB....we're probably a season away from that or more. I see Johnson on the roster throughout 2006

Another possibility - didn't Wright sign a one year deal only? If so, if McNeal shows anything in practice this year, he'll battle for the 2-3 spot with Doug in camp 2007, and Wright will likely be gone

  5. Ritchie Braham is a player who I have nothing but praise for. Tough, smart, and a gamer. I think he's been a good mentor to the two young centers as well.

That said, his contract is up at the end of this year, so it is in a sense a good thing Ghiaciuc is getting playing time, as he is to be our starter at Center (Wilkerson's knee is still holding him back) by the 2007 season opener anyway. Would we have preferred his playing time come later in the season, in mop up duty when we are significantly ahead late in th 4th quarter? Probably. But the game snaps he got last week and from here on - for a while at least - will be of enormous value come 2007.

Would I have preferred it to come more at home against a lesser defense? Yeah. But at some point, you've had enough practive, and it is time to see what you can do.

    It's now

He's the player I will be watching closest come Sunday.

  6. Well, these guys are all on IR for 6 weeks, then the team has 21 days more to take a look at them and make a decision on what to do. So that covers fully half the season -- and a lot can happen in that time. It could easily be that we have had a couple guys injured (not that I hope that happens, but it's likely) and that could open spots for the returnees.

I think the more pressing question is, what do we do when Odell is eligible to play again? That's just 3 weeks away. At this point I'd say Wilkins is toast.

Nope - AJ Nicholson will be the one let go because 1) he is eligible for the PS and 2) because Nicholson doesn't play ST while Wilkins excels at ST play

  7. You've got three players on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list right now

    OT Adam Kieft

    DE Jonathan Fanene

    RB Chris Perry

As I understand it, they are out 6 weeks sometime thereafter (there may be some roster exemption time and etc delaying this a week or so more) a decision has to be made to either

    a) add the player to the roster, waiving another player to create a spot

    B) put the player on season ending IR

    c) trade the player (unlikely)

    d) waive the player

so...for each of the three players, what do you anticipate happening? I realize this can all change due to injuries over the next month and a half, and so we can update our takes as we go along.

    my current take

    Kieft

I don't think he'll be healthy enough to go, so he'll go to IR, ending his season again. Given the emergence of the other young OLs, I don't understand why he was PUP'ed instead of IR'ed in the first place

    Fanene

Honestly, who do you let go at this point to give him a spot? In my dream scenario, Rucker is waived and signed to the PS, but I think he'll be waived if healthy, IR'ed if not.

    Perry

I think Quincy Wilson heads back to the PS to make room for Perry, and the PS will release WR Holt, TE Ghent, or FB Tahi. Yeah, I don't like the guy, but the Bengals seem to like him pretty well

  8. I'm not sold on any of them, but

Joseph - one average quality game, not bad for a rookie in his first appearance

Whitworth - probably inactive on Sunday for the rest of the year unless there are 2 or more injured/out players on the OL. Not sold on him.

Rucker - hate hate hate hate hate this pick. hate it.

Peko - first round type production. outstanding.

Nicholson - waived as soon as Odell comes back. No value from this very bad pick

Reggie McNeal - not good enough to make the team as a returner, wr, or qb. another poor pick.

Kilmer - I still haven't seen enough of this guy to make a judgement. To get value, he needs to replace the hard working but vastly undertalented KK

Brazell - injuries happen, but why did we draft 3 WR's (yes, I still include Kilmer) when this is the deepest position on the team? Looked good in reseason, obviously. More value here if we can get a trade for Henry or KW....CHad, Housch, and Tab are too valuable.

I'll add here that I really, really hated the pick of Tab Perry last year, but the guy is a machine - wr, h-back, return man, special team tackler, blocker, you name it. So maybe just maybe Frostee can be that kind of guy as well. For now, I doubt it. He sits idle, probably walks with Two Carry to the bank to cash his check.

  9. Ive been a bengals fan all my life.WHY SHOULD I BE TREATED LIKE THIS!!! I may be a girl but I know more about football than probably 90% of those on here!!!!

    No problem....prove it....

Go post some actual bengals-related thoughts (you know, on the actual Bengals forums and in Bengals-related topics, not this intro crap) if you expect to be taken seriously.

If you can talk Bengals and football, I don't care what gender you are, and I doubt most of the non-trolls care either. So go do it. Leave this thread behind and show us what you are made of, and I ain't talkin pictures.

Even better....drop this alias and register a new one that does not include the word "sexy". If you want to be taken seriously here, that's your best first move. If on the other hand we keep seeing you post weepy drivel here as sexywendy, then yeah, you're a poser looking for attention.
