The thing about Mike is that while he has been a very bad owner in terms of the product on the field, he is by all accounts a genuinely good person. And I think we sometimes underestimate the value of that. Whatever else we have to live with as Bengals fans, we don’t have to deal with an owner who is a complete ass personally as well as professionally.

Yeah, the nickel has been effectively their base for a while now. And that’s just part of a league wide trend.

One further problems with signing anyone, regardless of position: they really don’t have much space to add anyone. They’re just $3.6 million under the cap at this point. Typically they hold back more like $5 million for an injury pad but they cut into that when they claimed Scharping at $2.5 million for one year back in August. Not that they couldn’t redo a deal to free up space but we know that’s not the usual MO.

If your whole strategy is, Joe will save us, why don’t I take your salary and put it toward his giant second contract? Tell me what, exactly, YOU bring to the table, Zac? I freely admit that’s unfair, Zac clearly has a solid grip on the locker room and the players love him, he is not without value. But it highlights his limitations. Imagine Joe with a Bill Walsh or a Sam Wyche or a Bill Belicheck etc. to raise him up. This team would steamroller the league for a decade. As it is we are struggling to stay at .500.
