Assign the the kid a chauffer.

Defense.
Line:
Odom and Geathers at DE with Rucker and Fanene playing a situational role.
5 Man rotation with Peko, Sims, Shirley, Thornton and Fanene playing various roles.
In a 3-4 look they will play Sims/Peko at NT with Odom, Thornton, and Fanene at 3-4 DE
Odom will be on the field ALOT!
Linbackers:
Rivers is going to be the day one starter at MLB he will rotate to SAM when they line up 3-4. Rivers will play MLB because he is best leader on the LBer corp excepting Jones who will be a backup and leadership will be that much more important now that the MLBer will have the headset. Odell and Brooks haven't shown that type of decision making ability.
Thurman provided he makes the team will play on the weak side OLB to maximize his playmaking ability, Brooks will play the SSOLB position. Jeanty at SSOLB, Jones MLB, and Blackstock at WSOLB. Thurman will rotate to WIL in a 3-4 with Jeanty coming in to fill the fourth spot moving Brooks to WSOLB.
They are going to be big and fast the question is can they play disaplined defense and will the scheme maximize their potential. Of Course the ability to stay healthy and out-of-jail would be nice as well. Pass rush will come from Geathers and Odom and the OLBers goodness knows Thurman and Brooks can rush the passer.
DBs:
Safeties are going to be tough to predict. Ndukwe and Lynch are locks to make the team, White as well probably. I like the look of Hebert as well which leaves Daze-Jones and Busing on the outside looking in. DJax is history. Young and fast as well as deep and these guys (unlike the LBers) are also great character guys.
CBs are going to be J Joe and Leon Hall with Castille/Blue Adams playing the nickle. Deltha won't make this team after the problems he gave the coaches last year he will be part of the change in additude that Marvin was talking about last year.
We are going to be VERY young on defense but if we can stay reasonably healthy and Odell can keep his head on straight we will also be VERY athletic maybe the most athletic defense in the NFL and hopefully our new D-Coordinator can keep it simple and just allow his players to make plays

You guys think chad is bad wait for Jeremy, the man almost single handedly wrecked the Giants lockerroom.
-
STOP IT!
If Chad was going to be traded he would have been traded by pick #22 of the first round. Chad is a Bengal and will be a Bengal and the fans (as well as Chad himself) better get used to it.

I guess my grade comes down to this.
Would I have preferred to draft Rivers and Sims or Ellis. Had I graded this draft after Saturday I would have given it a C- but after watching the second day come around their strategy was clear, they weren't going to reach for a player just because of need (I think Simpson is a better player for the Bengals then Laws would have been) they were going to stick with their draft board and the way it unfolded they could have had a quality DT even if Sims had gone earlier. I like taking a character risk in the fifth because if it fails they are easy to get rid of and Shirley looks like a great prospect. I find it amusing that Florio is dinging the Bengals "Bad Character Draft" because of one 5th round risk. ILOVE the Lynch pick, I think he is going to be a starter and an impact player for this team and would not have been upset if they had taken him 2 rounds earlier.
Taking the draft as a whole I would give it an A-
Rivers, B
Simpson, A
Sims, B+
Caldwell, A
Collins, B
Shirley, A-
Lynch, A+
Sherry, C
Craig, B-
Urrutia, A

Yes I traded Chad Johnson for the #22 and #92 picks in the draft.
Dorsey went #2, Ellis went #4, I selected Gholston with the #9 pick and Limas Sweed with pick #22. It was only a 1st Round draft but I wanted to package the first 2 3rds to trade back into the second round to select Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina and Tyrell Johnson SS Arkansas St. With our selection in the Third #96 I wanted Rubin from Iowa St. Any of you have a problem if the draft fell like this? I had a tough time with #22 Sweed, Albert, and Stewart were all there I decided to go for the only remaining WR that carried a first round grade but not selecting Albert was tough.
-
Smart in the same way that the Bengals would be smart to cut lose Chad if they received an offer like that.
-
No. If the Cowboys were to offer both their 2008 picks 22 and 28.
-
I would eat chad's 8 million for 22 and 28 in a heartbeat. Who would you take if we had 3 first rounders.
Sedrick Ellis
Limas Sweed
Quentin Groves
and then Chris Johnson in the second, my god that would be sweet.

If the Rams select Gholston which is looking more and more likely (per Scott Wright at NFL Draft Countdown on his online chat with Clan Rams), the Falcons are taking a good hard look at Matt Ryan at #3 because of the number of picks means that they can re-tool their defense in the second and third rounds because this draft is so deep at the skill positions. LINK: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/hashmarks/0-6-1...-the-draft.html. If the Raiders pick Darren McFadden over Chris Long then the Chiefs will take Long with the fifth pick. The Jets, Ravens, and Patriots are not likely to take either Dorsey or Ellis and the Saints are not likely to trade up since on of the two is likely to fall past the Bengals so it could work out that both Dorsey and Ellis fall to us at 9.
Here is how that could work and the support for that position.
Miami: Jake Long, OT, Michigan: Already signed.
St. Louis: Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State: http://www.clanram.com/forums/f103/chat-tr...t-wright-29852/
Atlanta: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/hashmarks/0-6-1...-the-draft.html
Oakland: Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9011360?source=most_viewed
Kansas City: Chris Long, DE, Virginia: http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDr...harkush2302.htm
New York Jets: Keith Rivers, OLB, USC: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=65&f=18...5&t=2365843
New England: Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy State: http://www.fantasyplayers.com/nfl/HotOffTh...?NOTE_ID=465905
Balitmore: Branden Albert, OG/OT, Virginia : http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/foo...t_the_r_46.html
Dorsey could go to the Rams, Falcons, or Chiefs; Ellis could go to the Chiefs or Ravens but the likelyhood is that IF the Rams select Gholston at #2 as is being reported by Scott Wright and the Falcons decide that they must land a top QB in this draft at #3 as is being reported by Hub Arkush (both very reputable sources) then at a minimum one of the two will fall to us at #9 provided the Saints don't pull a trade with the Chiefs or the Patriots.
-
Need to have 22 not 28, it's only 6 picks but it could mean a world of difference in the type of player we get.
-
Good Luck David, we hardly knew ye!
-
Chad is about not wanting to be the second best paid WR on his own team.
When TJ's deal gets done that is exactly what he will be. That all this is about nothing more.
-
I Am seeing Dan Connor dropping like a rock, if he falls to the second and we pick Ellis or Dorsey would you consider drafting him?
-
I take Johnson because while he might not be a better all around back than Ray Rice or Matt Forte, he is a much better change of pace back, Again I expect Johnson to have an impact similar to Maurice Jones-Drew I think he is that kind of player and neither Rice nor Forte will have that kind of impact.
Jackson I selected because IF we lose Chad Johnson the Bengals DESPERATELY need a WR to stretch the field, no WR currently on the Bengals roster can get deep with regularity (Housh does it because defenses have rotated towards Chad leaving him one man to beat) and Jackson is the best talent available with the speed to get deep consistently.
As far as small school players, I believe that you get a better bang for your buck with small school talent in the later rounds than with bigger school kids because the bigger school kids are a more known quantity. With small school players their achievments often get overlooked because of the talent they have playing against, there is always a concern that their skills will not translate to the NFL but that is where the pro day and combine testing comes into play and if a kid has the athletic ability to match up with the other prospects it justifies what they accomplished on the field.
Before Hair starts railing on me for being inconsistent with regards to Leodis McKelvin, I believe in looking at small school prospects later than Rd. 2 unless they have had an exceptional career and they have tested very well, since Leodis McKelvin will be long gone by Rd. 3 and since he has had a very pedestrian college career I have taken him off my draft board. Rogers Cromartie had a much stronger college career but not a strong enough one to entice me to select him with the 9th overall pick. Again I go back to McKelvin intercepting all of 4 passes in his four year college career and having only 22 Pass Breakups in four years he simply was not an impactful player on the field and given the type of talent he competed against in conference (I recognize that Troy plays a brutal non-conference schedule) I expect much more production based upon his talent level.

9) Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC, so much has been said about this but the Bengals NEED a dominent player at DT and Ellis is perfect for that, wouldn't sneeze at Glen Dorsey either for the same reason. If not Ellis or Dorsey, Branden Albert, Derrick Harvey, or Phillip Merling. I wouldn't be too upset with Keith Rivers although I still believe he is more like Brian Simmons than Derrick Brooks. I am against Clady because I think he is lazy and not dedicated to the sport which is dangerous when all of a sudden you are rich and you still have to go out and get your brains beaten in every week.
46) Chris Johnson, RB, East Carolina, no he will never be an every down back and if Johnathan Stewart were to fall to us in the second I would take him instead but, he can catch the ball like a receiver, he is a VERY dangerous Kick Returner, and he is the fastest guy ever to play in the NFL since the combine era. This guy is a threat everytime he touches the ball, he demands attantion when he is in the game ala Maurice Jones-Drew. He will ease the load on Rudi Johnson so he can extend his career and yet defenses have to account for him. He will make our receivers better. His game tape is sick and many of those plays are against NFL caliber players.
77) Dexter Jackson, WR, Appalachian St. Yes he is small but he runs great routes can get deep on the edge and has the quickness to get loose in the middle of the field. Reminds me alot of Steve Smith at Utah and has had similar production.
Great potential as a special teamer as well.
97) Jeremy Zuttah, OT/OG/C, Rutgers, Best position might be Center but played Left/Right Tackle for Rutgers because of need. Smart and had on of the best interviews at the combine in recent memory. Very similar to Whitworth in that he can play at a high level anywhere you put him on the line.
112) Corey Lynch, S, Appalachian State, What's not to like, has the size, speed, and athletism to play at a high level, will be an instant impact player on special teams where he blocked 6 kicks in college. 24 Ints and 28 PBUs at App St. Besides we like to tag team players for the same school in the draft (see Chad Johnson and TJ, David Pollack and Odell Thurman)
145) Brian Johnston, DE, Gardner Webb, High production, outstanding athletism (comparable numbers to Vernon Gholston) VERY high ceiling. Actually had a better 3 cone and shuttle time than Gholston had at the combine with a .01 of a second slower 40. Is heavier and taller than Gholston and had 24 Tackles for loss last year.
177) Franklin Dunbar, OT, Middle Tennessee State, Great Athlete from a small school similar in size and ability to Stacy Andrews but with more polish.
207) Adarius Bowman, WR, Oklahoma State, yes he is a character concern but a late 6th round pick would work for a risk like that. Best WR I saw in all of college football last year. He slips because of the drug bust and slow 40 times but there is no doubting his talent, runs great routes and constantly can beat his man off the press.
244) Jeremy Geathers, OLB/DE, UNLV, Yes Jumpy's son and Robert's cousin. Good prospect, had good numbers in college good bloodlines. Smallish might be better suited for a 4-3 SSOLB probably where I project him for the Bengals at 6'2" 256 lbs.
Had a very slow combine 4.96 but a better 4.84 pro day still his combine effort pushes him down to the seventh.
247) Haruki Nakamura, S, Cincinnati, I just like the way this guy plays might make the team as a special teams ace.
That would be my dream draft and the players I would pick if I were the Bengals GM.

I will be thinking about how hte Bengals need to be more creative in being an active drafter rather than a passive one to make sure that you get the players you need. 2 drafts ago the Bengals targeted Manny Lawson as the guy they wanted but instead of making that happen they just waited to see Lawson drafted two picks ahead of their position in the first. This is not supposed to be a discussion of the ultimate results, certainly J Joe has panned out to be a better pro than Lawson at this stage in their respective careers more that the Bengals have always sat there waiting of a player to fall to them instead of targeting a guy and making sure you are in the right position to get that guy at the best possible value (either trading up or down) The Cowboys have done this constantly.
It still burns me that we selected a QB at #3 of the 1999 draft when we had all the flexibility in the world at our disposal if we had only taken the Saints offer.
-
Simon Castille, Cory Lynch, Tyvon Branch, Brian Johnson, Tyrell Johnson (although he may end up as high as 2nd), Beau Bell, Ahtyba Rubin, Kendall Langford, Ezra Butler, Zach Bowman. and Antwaun Molden are all mid-round defenders with alot of upside (mid round being third or later). Would take any of them. One prospect who is looking more and more like an undrafted free agent is Haruki Nakamura from UC, the guy is just a flat out good football player and he is worth at least a flyer.

"Pete Rose Jr anyone?"
You can't honestly be comparing baseball to football, can you? Baseball is all about ability, there is very little about the game that is cerebral outside of catcher and pitcher. Football is all about dedication and the ability to diagnose what going on around you quickly. Long was trained to be a football player from birth which is why is more technically polished than any DE to come into the draft in recent years. Again Long is much more David Pollack then Justin Smith. Again Smith dominated in high school and college by brute strength and superior athletic ability which can only get you so far when you are competeing with other players who are just as strong and just as athletic, Pollack and Long were craftsmen, study film working on their game, Justin just spent time in the weightroom which was good enough for him to be a good not great NFL player, both Long and Pollack had a love for the game and for the nuances of the game that drives them to be great and Pollack would have been great if not for a freak injury which could have happened to anyone.
Again Chris Long would be the #1 player in my draft he would be a perfect 4-3 DE in the Bengals scheme

Gosh, Cason had 71 tackles last year to McKelvin's 60. I just don't see spending the #9 pick on a guy who couldn't even dominate the Sun Belt Conference, this looks like another Fabian Washington to me.
Uhhh, Fabian Washington played for Nebraska...which pretty much invalidates your own big versus small conference rant. Plus, Washington was lightly regarded until he ripped off a spectacular time in the 40 yard dash. By comparison, McKelvin is the consensus highest rated CB prosoect....while even you have suggested Cason might be looked at as a FS.
Just saying...
My point is that he was a post-season workout wonder that stole the attention of scouts with his workouts and was a complete bust in the NFL. Nothing about small vs. big I just think McKelvin will have a similar career. Oh and BTW I am a big supporter of Brian Johnson (Gardner-Webb), Tyrell Johnson (Arkansas St.), Corey Lynch (App. St) , this is not about Big vs. Small this is Small with no production other than punt returns, Devin Hester was a second rd. pick so if you are picking a guy at #9 who can only show you punt return ability on the field you are better off waiting until the 3rd or 4th. Look at his game tape, 2 of the 3 punt return touchdowns have come at home vs. small school opponents, both of his INTs were gifts where McKelvin was essentialy out of position. He cannot claim ANY respectable production on defense for his entire college career and we are expected to take him 9th over all? He is not even the most athletic corner in the draft Tyvon Branch would get the nod as far as I'm concerned.

Is there a great deal of difference between Cason from Arizona and McKelvin? Yes McKelvin has a .07 difference in the 40 time but Cason is bigger stronger and jumps better. On the field, they are both excellent PR, but Cason had 5 Ints (15 Career) and 14 pass breakups vs. 2 Ints and 9 Pass Breakups for McKelvin oh and Cason was in the Pac 10 while McKelvin played for Troy St. I bring this up because we can likely draft Cason or Talib in the 2nd oh and Cason could play free safety.
Now I don't think the Bengals should draft either player and should wait to the third for Tyrell Johnson, Corey Lynch or Tyvon Branch. Branch for one is a better athlete than McKelvin and is bigger and stronger and will probably be available at our first pick in the third.
McKelvin for his career at Troy St. had 17 PBUs and 4 Ints, conversely Cason has 32 and 15, Talib 43 and 13, Porter 30 and 16. Porter had almost as many Ints at Indiana as McKelvin had Pass Breakups. All of these guys excelled as Punt Returners (all over 10 yards per return) and while none come close to McKelvin's production as a returner, McKelvin has never shown ANYTHING as a Cornerback to indicate that he will be an elite player and how much of his return ability came at the expense of barely D-1 grade talent in the Sun Belt conference?
The Bengals need to come out of the first round with either Dorsey or Ellis, the dropoff between them and the other DTs are significant and it fills the biggest need area the team has. If that means trading a 4th to New England to make sure, I am fine with that. If that means we have to trade a third to K.C., I am fine with that. Dorsey and Ellis (barring injury) will be pro bowlers in the NFL if that means sacrificing Frostee Rucker, Caleb Miller, Chris Henry, Kelly Wahsington, or Sean Brewer I am ok with that.
-
The big ? is will New England trade down with someone who will then pluck Ellis/Dorsey
I know the conventional wisdom is that Atlanta will take Dorsey at 3 but I just can't see it. That means Atlanta starts the season with Harrington, Redman, and Leftwich at the most important position...all of those guys have failed in the NFL. Ok so lets say they wait to pick a QB in Rd. 2. Ryan will be gone, I believe Henne and Brohm will also be gone so that means your taking Flacco? to groom as your starting QB? Again I think the risk is too great. The Bears, Vikes, Panthers, Bucs, Dolphins, Chiefs, Ravens and possibly the 49ers all need to come out of this draft with a QB. What happens if the Chiefs go Ryan, the Ravens go Brohm and the Vikes take Henne, then you roll around to the Dolphins in Rd. 2 and they take Flacco. The Falcons have a shot to take the best QB prospect in the draft, I cannot see them pass.
Miami: Jake Long
St. Louis: Vernon Gholston
Atlanta: Matt Ryan
Oakland: Darren McFadden (Al Davis will not pass on McFadden's speed)
Kansas City: Dorsey/Ellis (but could be a Tackle as well)
N.Y. Jets: Chris Long
New England: Leodis McKelvin
Baltimore: Brian Brohm (don't laugh, they have NOONE to play the position and cannot wait to the middle of Rd. 2 to find someone, they cannot go into this season with an ancient McNair, Boller, and Troy Smith)
Cincinnati: Sedrick Ellis
New Orleans: Dominique Rogers-Cromartie
That is how I see the top ten going
Undrafted FA Signings Begin

Being a Nebraskan now, I can say that the media here likes the kid alot and he just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time he also needs to stay away from Carl Nicks who has been there twice instigating the problem.
