Do uniform #'s indicate anything?

Was just checking the roster #'s on the Bengals site and noticed that Thurman is taking the #45 instead of the traditional 50's linebacker #. Is this an indication that they may use him some as a SS? Does he have the speed and range for that? We know he has a killer instinct, could see him creeping up to the line on blitzes and being a Fulcher-like force in the middle. I just may be reading more into this.

Pollack is taking #99 (please everybody forget Buck and Big Daddy). Does this mean he will be used more in that pass rushing end/OLB spot than a drop and cover OLB? Of course he'll do both but the 90's # brings images to me of him blowing up double team blocks and eating divisional quarterbacks for Sunday brunch.

My real reason for checking out uniform #'s is that I'm ready to order my own Pollack jersey for 2005 tailgating. :D

The NFL is pretty strict and regimented about which position group gets what numbers. I think it is meant as an aid for fans, announcers and even the refs in knowing what position a person is playing. But as someone mentioned above, these may be temporary until the end of preseason and the final cuts. I would guess that the higher picks get first dibs on the available numbers then the FA's get what's left.

The LB numbers are usually in the 50's but they can also be in the 90's. I think Steve Foley was 97 when he was here. As for Thurman, my guess is they are out of numbers in the 50s and maybe even the 90's. Usually the 40s are for DBs or RBs.

This is true, but those rules don't apply to training camps. If he makes the team he will change numbers.

1-9 Quarterbacks and Kickers

10-19 Quarterbacks, Receivers, and Kickers

20-49 Running Backs and Defensive Backs

50-59 Centers and Linebackers

60-79 Defensive Linemen and Offensive Linemen

80-89 Receivers and Tight Ends

90-99 Defensive Linemen and Linebackers

If a player changes his position during his playing career in the NFL and such change moves him out of a category specified above, he must be issued an appropriate new jersey number.

Any request to wear a number for a special position not specified

(e.g., H-back) must be made to the Commissioner.

During the preseason period when rosters are larger, the league allows duplication and other temporary deviations from the numbering scheme specified, but the rule must be adhered to for all players during the regular season and postseason. Clubs must make numbers available to adhere to the rule, even if it requires putting back into circulation a number that has been retired or withheld for other reasons.

Thurman will be #51

Pollack could be #52, or #58

Who's wearing # 57 ..? Do we dare give Reggie Williams' old number to one of our new guys..?

Best linebacker numbers are always

56

57

58

Simmons is 56, a backup is wearing 57 So I say that's Pollack's number , ( gotta keep the 7 in it from his college days )

and give Thurman # 54.

See my post LANDON TO STRONG SAFETY

It might mean nothing, then again.......................

Sporting News thought he could play SS before he was drafted. I don't think the plan was for him to be the back up middle backer............ Caleb is too light to start.... we need some gal to cook him up a lotta steaks and beef him up

Pretty strict, my butt! Why the heck do half of the WR's have numbers in the teens? I'm sick of this "we're exempt from the rules" attitude that some of these players come to the table with--cough...Meshawn, Randy Moss...cough cough. In the Randy Moss situation, I recognize that 80 & 81 were not available (former HOFers's #), 84 is on Porter, and (I think) 88 was out. (Upon further review, 89 is Ronald Curry, 83 is a third year TE, 85 is Doug Gabriel, 87 is Alvis Whitted, so why not 88, 86, 85, or 82?)

Pollack is number 99.

Odell will get a new number.

PS,that or can some one please show me the article that states pollack will be getting a new number because I remember there being talk about Odell getting one (because he can't use 40-49)but not pollack I only read about them "giving" pollack 99

It said on Bengals.com that Odell would like to keep 45, but it aint gonna happen. He can keep 45 till training camp but he has to switch later on. What the number will be, we have no idea.

Someone said that Pollack would probably keep 99 because he's allowed and because they changed someone else's number to make that happen. That sounds like it makes sense.

QBs, WRs and Kickers are allowed to have numbers in the teens while Kickers and QBs can have numbers from 1-9.

I think Landon Johnson is going to play nickel CB, Pollack is going to play NT (thus Big Fatty's old #), Thurman is going to play FS and Brian Simmons is going to play SS.

They are also going to cut James and O'Neal to save cap space and convert all their extra LB's to DB's, Clemons will play MLB, and then convert to a 3-4 so they can also stick Miller and Abdullah in there too, what the hell.

You forgot the part where they are all going to be slot receivers on offense also.
