IckeyShuffle Posted April 26, 2005 Report Share Posted April 26, 2005 Was just checking the roster #'s on the Bengals site and noticed that Thurman is taking the #45 instead of the traditional 50's linebacker #. Is this an indication that they may use him some as a SS? Does he have the speed and range for that? We know he has a killer instinct, could see him creeping up to the line on blitzes and being a Fulcher-like force in the middle. I just may be reading more into this. Pollack is taking #99 (please everybody forget Buck and Big Daddy). Does this mean he will be used more in that pass rushing end/OLB spot than a drop and cover OLB? Of course he'll do both but the 90's # brings images to me of him blowing up double team blocks and eating divisional quarterbacks for Sunday brunch. I think it is meant as an aid for fans, announcers and even the refs in knowing what position a person is playing. But as someone mentioned above, these may be temporary until the end of preseason and the final cuts. I would guess that the higher picks get first dibs on the available numbers then the FA's get what's left.The LB numbers are usually in the 50's but they can also be in the 90's. Clubs must make numbers available to adhere to the rule, even if it requires putting back into circulation a number that has been retired or withheld for other reasons. Why the heck do half of the WR's have numbers in the teens? I'm sick of this "we're exempt from the rules" attitude that some of these players come to the table with--cough...Meshawn, Randy Moss...cough cough. In the Randy Moss situation, I recognize that 80 & 81 were not available (former HOFers's #), 84 is on Porter, and (I think) 88 was out. (Upon further review, 89 is Ronald Curry, 83 is a third year TE, 85 is Doug Gabriel, 87 is Alvis Whitted, so why not 88, 86, 85, or 82?) He can keep 45 till training camp but he has to switch later on. What the number will be, we have no idea.Someone said that Pollack would probably keep 99 because he's allowed and because they changed someone else's number to make that happen.
