We have to draft a quarterback, just in case

The Patriots didn't get lucky. They're one of the teams that follows the Ron Wolf draft strategy of looking in every draft for a QB with the physical tools required to start that can be selected on the 2nd day. Wolf has conceded that most drafts fall in such a way that the team can't actually pull the trigger on a new QB year after year, but you always target the position and you churn the backup QB position whenever possible. Wolf proved in Green Bay that if player developes as intended you've either got a top backup or valuable trade bait. The Patriots gained from many of the same things, but in their example Tom Brady provided them with a better player than Drew Bledsoe who was also a less expensive option as a starter.

Everything you say is true, except that the Pats didn't get lucky. What round was Brady, 4th...5th? They got a 2 time Superbowl MVP. That's lucky.

But the fact that Brady is a two-time Super Bowl MVP doesn't dictate that the strategy is lucky or not. It's simply a sign of how sound the draft strategy is, and how big the potential payoff might be. If your coaching staff is good enough to develope the 2nd day talent you stock the position with you're going to hit big on a player now and then. And by hitting it big I'm not talking about winning the Super Bowl MVP award. It's more than enough to find a quality starter good enough to make Drew Bledsoe expendable, and a quality backup to fill the role Brady vacated.

IMO we should Grab Kurt Warner, we have the O line that can give him time to find the open WR, he'd be the perfect fit here.

Well living out here in Arizona, I don't see Dennis Green letting Warner get away from him just yet. From all indications so far from the Cardinals organization, they plan on keeping him for at least another season.

Gotta agree with Hair on this one. The idea that a strategy worked better than in their wildest dreams doesn't make them lucky... it merely reinforces the fact that the strategy does work. The same with the Broncos taking 6th round RB's all the time. They get a Terrell Davis every once in a while. Not every time, but often enough to make the strategy worth the gamble.

Taking a 1st day QB with the intention of him starting for us, either short term or long term, ends the '06 season for us. They didn't start Carson Palmer his 1st year, and he was the #1 overall pick. You think a 2nd or 3rd round pick will warrant starting when Palmer wasn't ready?

We need someone to fill in for CP that can hold down the fort short term this season if he's not ready to go. Drafting another high-priced QB regardless of what Palmer's status is unwise. In the long term he won't be good enough to take Palmer's job, and in the short term will play very poorly as a rookie until Palmer gets back. It's a wasted pick.

If Palmer is really so injury prone that we need another starter quality QB behind him, then not only was it stupid to re-sign him, but we need to cut ties with him as our franchise QB. If he can't be relied upon, we need to go another direction.

I personally don't think that one knee surgery is cause to panic in this regard. If we had Mike Vick as our franchise, I'd be concerned about his injury history... especially considering the way he plays the game. Palmer is a pocket QB... and I'm just not worried about him being the kind of QB that is always sitting out because of bumps and bruises. He had a very serious injury... and my guess is that this will be the end of it. Look at his history before this knee injury... he's tough.
