Ref in controversy has house vandalized

FOXSports.com

Posted: 1 hour ago

NFL referee Pete Morelli is having a rough week.

On Sunday, Morelli made one of the more controversial calls in NFL history, overturning what appeared to be an interception by the Steelers' Troy Polamalu. On Monday, his Stockton, Calif. home was vandalized, according to police reports.

Lieutenant Thomas Wells of the Stockton Police Department told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer that a police report was filed after a rock was thrown through Morelli's living room window late Monday night after Morelli and his wife had gone to bed. Lt. Wells emphasized that police had no suspect and no motive in the case and could not say with any degree of certainty whether the act of vandalism was related to Sunday's call.

"We are aware of the situation and we're cooperating with police in any way we can," said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello.

On Monday, the NFL admitted that Morelli had erred when he used instant replay to overturn the interception. Mike Pereira, the league's VP of officiating, said in a statement that the call on the field should have stood.

"He maintained possession long enough to establish a catch," Pereira said. "Therefore, the replay review should have upheld the call on the field that it was a catch and fumble."

Fortunately for Morelli — and the Steelers — while the botched call allowed the Colts to eventually pull within a field goal, it ultimately did not play any role in the outcome of the game, which Pittsburgh won, 21-18.

Feel bad for the guy, had to be steelers fans though...how classless

NFL official's home vandalized after Steelers call

ESPN.com news services

Someone threw a rock through Pete Morelli's window in Stockton, Calif., on Sunday after the NFL official's crew made a controversial call in the Steelers' win at Indianapolis.

During the game, an apparent interception by Troy Polamalu was reversed on replay, allowing the Colts to score their second touchdown during a frantic but failed rally in the fourth quarter. The NFL issued a statement Monday that the interception should have stood.

"It's kinda suspicious because of its close proximity to the game, but he doesn't know if it was related to his duties as a referee, his job as a high school principal or if it was a random act of mischief," Stockton police Lt. Thomas Wells told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Wednesday.

Morelli, a high school principal, and his wife were upstairs getting ready for bed when they heard a loud crash and ran downstairs where they found broken glass and a rock, Wells told the paper.

Joey Porter, a Pro Bowl selection and one of the Steelers' co-captains, criticized the crew repeatedly during a series of postgame interviews following a 21-18 win in the AFC divisional round. Among other comments, Porter said, "The whole world wanted Indy to win so bad, they were going to do whatever they had to do."

NFL spokesman Steve Alic said there would be no fine for the remarks.

During his news conference Tuesday, Steelers coach Bill Cowher called Porter's remarks "ridiculous" and said, "Our officials are doing the very best that they can do."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Let's not act like Steelers fans are the only people that would engage in this activity... Remember when Buckeyes fans sent death threats to that tight end after the Texas game?

Agree, this could happen in ANY city... In an attempt at being unbiased, you can DEFINITELY at Cincinnati to that list. How many wanted to KILL someone when they saw Carson laying on the field, knowing he wasn't coming back ??

WHODEY !!!

Typical Squealer faithful - two bit criminals and nothing better to do with their lives than cheer dirty hits, whine it when it happens to them, and vandalize a ref's home even though they won the game.

I'm not sure there's a dirtier, scuzzier, more low life group of people and players than the Steelers and their fans. :)

I hate them all.

There's no proof that a Steelers fan did this. Why would you speculate on such a thing? Granted, it was suspicious considering the timing. The guy shouldn't be working in the NFL, but whoever did this should be thrown in jail.

I honestly don't think there need be any doubt that Steelers fan(s) are responsible for this. That said, the same would happen out of any fanbase. Saying otherwise is pointless.
