HoosierCat
from PFT, quoting other sources...MULARKEY OUT . . . HAZ IN? Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports that Bills coach Mike Mularkey has quit as the team's head coach. Glazer says that Mularkey made the decision on Wednesday. The leading candidate to replace Mularkey is former Saints coach Jim Haslett. Haslett played linebacker for the Bills, and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 1980 and 1981. Haslett recently has interviewed for head coaching vacancies with the Lions and the Jets.Earlier...POSTED 5:02 p.m. EST, January 12, 2006 MULARKEY QUITTING? ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Bills coach Mike Mularkey met with team officials on Thursday afternoon, and that the meeting could lead to his resignation. Mort says that it is believed that Mularkey is meeting with owner Ralph Wilson and new G.M. Marv Levy. Per the report: "Sources said that, because of family considerations, Mularkey intended to walk away after only two seasons, but felt that he needed to meet with Bills management before he formally tendered his resignation. Mularkey had lengthy meetings with Wilson last week as the Bills owner dramatically reshuffled the football operation." We think there's a lot more to this one that someone calling Mularkey Jr. a bad name at school. The "family considerations" would have been more pronounced during and/or immediately after a disappointing regular season. So why not quit then? It could be that Mularkey opted to say nothing until Wilson decided whether to fire him. After all, NFL coaches who get fired while under contract still get paid; guys who quit don't. It's also possible that Mularkey didn't take kindly to the termination of multiple members of his coaching staff, or that he already has tired of hearing Levy say words like "overofficious." Or it could be that one of the other teams with a head coaching vacancy has come sniffing around, quietly and discreetly. Surely, Mularkey isn't going to retire from the profession. With vacancies in New York, Oakland, New Orleans, Detroit, and St. Louis, maybe someone put a bug in Mularkey's ear that if he can get out from under his current contract he might have a shot in another city.Wow... HoosierCat
Our f2fa.com partners at Bills Daily are all over this, of course...they don't buy the family reasons BS either...Disagreements Cause Resignation: ESPN reports that Mularkey has indeed resigned as head coach. They say the reason is because of disagreements on the direction of the organization. The report states Mularkey didn't like the setup for hiring assistants and recruiting free agents were conducive to winning. It appears earlier reports that he was resigning for family reasons aren't true, it was professional reasons why he is leaving. Reportedly he had two days of meetings with Ralph Wilson and Marv Levy and terms of the settlement of the remaining three years of his contract were not disclosed. Mularkey apparently will look for a new job next week.

Why? In December he said he is happy about his decision and had no regrets. I wonder where he ranks on the list of guys that have never played in the playoffs now that Richie and Willie made it? HoosierCat
I wonder where he ranks on the list of guys that have never played in the playoffs now that Richie and Willie made it?Oh, he's young, he has a ways to go. Just 114 games w/o a playoff appearance. Willie had 158. But the Bills front office seems to be doing all it can to help him break that mark...yikes.Good friend of mine is a Bills fan...the minute he heard they brought Levy back he told me he's bet they would roll "his rotting corpse" out on the sideline "so they could lose four more Super Bowls." (Yeah, he's a bit bitter.) I told him he was nuts but now I'm not so sure...
WillisXPress
honestly....MM was probably not the best candidate to begin with, he wasn't gonna win us a championship so its time he moved on....I'm of the opinion that we have to, yet again, start over.,.....everyone starts fresh...including former #1 QB draft picks, career backups QB's, and everyone else...i'll give you guys Losmans knee for Carson for a first in 06....deal? AMC
Plain and simple, he didn't want to work under Marv Levy. Can't blame him for that....

I do think that he was having a hard time finding assistants because he's on thin ice as is....what OC or DC would want to move to a situation that could get blown up in a year..... Lewis had made great strides.... the Palmer thing might set him back if he doesn't return to form..... I think he'll be back, but next year might be a slight setback
