San Antonio Bengal
I didn't see the game, so I'm curious... why did they bring Flutie in to do a drop kick? Was it a just for fun kind of moment or what?
Stripes
I'm not sure what we're talking about here.... drop kick?
Green 66
Yeah a drop kick is legal in NFL football, though as mentioned above not used in some time. If i remember Flutie and some kicker are the only ones still practise the art of drop kicking. the use of a holder is there to make sure that the ball is down and in position for the kicker, he is however not required to kick field goals or extra points. All the ball has to do to be a legal kick not a punt is to touch the ground. So the kicker lines up like a punt recieves the ball then drops the ball to the turf. When it bouces back up he kicks it. Its all about timing, just like volley shots are in soccer. Its funky but effective, the reason teams went away from this type of kick is that there is way too much to go wrong, bad bounce, missed kick, etc... the key is i remember is that the tip hits the turf not the ball body. Anyways good for flutie. I wish i had seen it instead of the blood letting in Arrowhead. Mike GreenWaynesville Ohio

turningpoint
wow i was wondering what the deal was, and why more teams didn;t do this.like they could go for 2 if it aint there just kick the thing through the fg posts, but damn you have to kick it off the ground and hit it in mid air, craziness. Stripes
Well that seems rather pointless if all they wanted was an extra point. It was cool to see on Sportscenter though.
BengalByTheBay
My favorite aspect of this was that it gave the fawning ESPN crew yet another reason to call Belicheck a genius. I swear to God they did -- verbatim -- for this novelty kick. Unbelieveable how hard they jock this team. After all, what was it really except an example of playing around during a meaningless game? How in the world does that make Belicheck a genius? I imagine it happened something like this:Flutie: Hey genius, can I do a dropkick -- I'm just about to retire and I always wanted to do one during a game. Remember during two-a-days when I wasn't taking any snaps, but was just kinda fooling around kicking them?? Pllleeeeeaaaaassee.Genius: WTF?? Okay, go ahead.Flutie: You really are a coaching genius -- Schottenheimer never let me do one...not even during practice.Am I the only one that would be thrilled by a huge Jacksonville win at the razor??[EDIT: BTW - don't get me wrong, I don't think that Belicheck did it in order to be called a genius. I think he did it b/c he didn't give a crap. But, whereas most coaches would be called wacky (it kinda sounds like something Wyche would do doesn't it?) Belicheck is a genius for it. I'm just tired of all the helmet polishing of the Pats for Belicheck, Bruschi, Brady, yada yada yada]
Green 66
Well i cant claim that i know that on my own, i saw one of those NFL films shows on kicking and they had a segment on the drop kick. its really old film too. It was compiled during the 1990's if i remember. That is the nice thing about those NFL Films they do try to educate on the little know aspects of the game, which is nice for a novice like myself.Mike Green
