Blown calls happen. How often have we complained about bad calls and non-calls? But the bottom line is that call had less to do with why Pitt is teetering on the edge of the playoff cliff than their loss three weeks ago to the putrid Ravens did. And that points up what I consider the true question for Pitt in the next few seasons: is Big Ben really Brittle Ben? Ben hasn't really gotten knocked around that badly this season...certainly not as badly as someone like David Carr, who gets slammed to the turf every other play, or even Carson last year. Yet he's missed games, had ankle and knee and now thumb injuries. (And didn't he claim a foot injury late last year that hampered him in the playoffs?) It's starting to sound to me like he's another Chad Pennington...

#1. That forum is pathetic. Is it just me or was the supposed "video proof" inconclusive AT BEST ?? You can't even see Ratliff and regardless, one play doesn't equal the game or your team really does SUCK !!!

#2. Talk about a QB taking shots, Favre got his asspiece handed to him that whole game !!!

#3. Kyle Boller still SUCKS !!!

WHODEY !!!

On the Steelers last scoring drive there was a play where three offensive lineman jumped the snap by almost a full second. Despite the blatant penalty....nothing was called. As I immediately looked over at one of my friends, a guy who just happened to be wearing a Steeler jersey, he sheepishly said...."They're playing in Pittsburgh. Whadda ya want?"

What about the last call the Bengals had on D when Ben threw his 4th interception of the game that was returned for a TD? The Steeler fans were so quick to jump on the Ratliff fumble, but no mention of Big Ben's Int at the end of the game.

That was some great video 'evidence' wasn't it. He circled the ball, but you couldn't see any part of his body to see if he was down.

My thoughts exactly!

For starters, the Bengals simply out played the Steelers. You create opertunities when you play your asses off and that's what the Bengals did. The Steelers deserved to lose all three of the past games.

Second, Ben has taken some really nasty hits this year. Did you see that one in San Diego? How many QB's do you know would have gotten up after taking a helmet directly to the knee that hard? How about the one Bengal who purposely went right for Ben's knee this Sunday at full speed and twisted Ben with his feet planted.

The Steelers O-Line is having a real problem keeping the opposing defenses off of Ben's blind side because they've had to resort to starting a rookie there. He's getting hit almost as soon as the ball is hiked. IMHO so far Ben's injuries has little to do with Ben and everything to do with the blocking. He's getting knocked down way to much and way to fast.

Blown calls even out over the season....Good teams overcome the refs!!!

BINGO!!!! Bad teams use the calls as excuses.

Well, that's usually the case. But the Steelers really aren't doing any worse, at least in terms of sacks allowed, than they were last season (15th allowing 36 last season, 15th allowing 25 so far this year). But that's kind of beside my point, since even one hit can send those brittle types to the showers.

Note I'm not saying that Ben isn't tough -- anyone who goes out and plays pro football is tough in my book. But some players, whether by some freak of physicality or simply bad luck, seem to "break" easier than others. Pennington is one example. Akili Smith, who was constantly suffering from a turf toe or pullled hammy or gawd knew what, was another. Only time will tell if Ben has the same problem or if this year was just a rough year for him. However the season turns out, if I were a Pitt fan one of the top things I'd put on my list of things I'd like to see in 2006 is, "Ben plays a full 16 (and hopefully more) games."

Marvin specifically mentioned that in his press conference. He had to be careful what he said, for fear of fine, but he was upset that Thurman was tripped and still called for the penalty. I don't agree with Ben not being tough. That shot he took in SD was borderline sickening. I wouldn't trade Carson for anyone, but if I had to choose another qb, Ben would be high on the list.

Again, just to be clear, for me it isn't a "toughness" issue. I can't imagine that the last few games have been anything less than physically painful for Ben, what with a cracked thumb, a pair of iffy knees and a fouled ankle. Clearly the kid can play through adversity. I'm not saying he's a p*ssy or anything like that. My question is just, is he one of those guys who is going to spend one or two or three (or occasionally more) weeks out every season because of nagging injuries that can't be played through or which require minor but multiple-game-missing surgery to overcome?

Last season Ben played 16 gaames, including the playoffs, and reportedly had some sort of foot injury that contributed to the final Pats loss. Now he's gone through 8 games in season two and has banged-up knees, an ankle, and a thumb. All that in 24 games in which he hasn't taken -- at least based on sacks allowed -- an abnormal pounding.

Maybe it's a fluke. But again, if I were a Pitt fan, I'd like to see the guy spend a full season healthy under center.

Ben has certainly had his injury issues this year, but I'd wait one or two more seasons before I compare him to Chad Pennington. I am sure that's what you meant anyways, JC.

Carson missed some games in his first year on a fluke injury, and this year has managed to stay perfectly healthy. If Ben contiunes this act in the near future, then Pittsburgh fans will certainly have cause for concern.
