Of the 32 teams, the Packers have the fifth most available cap room based on the 40 players under contract for next season and additional charges. Leading the way is Arizona ($25.6 million of room based on the $85.5 million ceiling), Cleveland ($24.3 million under), Cincinnati ($19.9 million under) and Minnesota ($18.5 million under).

saw that off lance mcalisters website. hadnt seen it anywhere so i thought i might post it

Marvin Lewis has been very careful the last couple of years to put us in a good cap situation. I wonder what the strategy will be. Will he go out and try to get a couple big free agents (i.e. Chris Hovan, and Corey Chavous), or will he continue to extend our current players, and keep this team together for years, while we continue to build through the draft.

One way probably makes us the team to beat next year... the other way might give us longevity like the Patriots have had. I really want to win now… but the Patriots never went out and signed big name free agents (with one exception in Dillon). Maybe we’ll continue being safe with the cap, and create depth on the roster, rather than getting those big name guys.

Wow, I knew we were in good shape cap room wise, but I didn't realize we are in the top five. This is great. We're better already than all those other teams listed by far. With a playoff berth, free agents won't shun us anymore (at least not the big ones). I think we'll land one big signing at least, but other than that, I think it'll be the same story as usual... draft draft draft.

Add 2.5 if we cut Thorton, So I bet we go after a DT and sign Smith,Levi, and Simmons. We draft a SS and a gaurd to get Boobie out of there. I bet they draft heavy on D. For Safety depth and dl. If we sign a strong safety we might draft2 dlinemen in the first two rounds. Mw and KW one year. Polak and Odel another. A decent SS would come alot cheaper than a DT.

Since we do seem to be in such a good position with the cap... and our team is headed to the playoffs, we should be able to land a big FA this year.

I visited a TB fan forum, and they attribute their good TB rushing defense almost entirely to Hovan... and for whatever reason don't think that he will stay in Tampa for more than his 1 year contract.

He is from Ohio... does this seem to make sense? We could sign Hovan... release Thornton, draft Rod Wright, and play Robinson on 3rd down (Hovan is mostly a rushing down DT)... and off to the superbowl with us!

That would be Geathers, Hovan, Wright, and Smith on the line... and the rest of the team we just continue building through the draft, and signing players to extensions.

One big FA is not too much to ask, especially since we are doing so well cap wise that is shouldn't hurt our long term plans... or am I all wet?
