Mariucci Fired

I don't think that even having their cheerleaders perform on the sidelines naked could inspire the Lions. And inspiration isn't the problem anyhow, they have a truckload of bad personnel, starting with their QBs.

Can't say I'm surprised Mooch got the boot, but really it wasn't his fault. Matt Millen is a complete doofus, and the Ford family makes the Brown family look like a model of football management excellence.

It makes you wonder. Guys like Mariucci and George Seifert had great success in SF but were unable to replicate it elsewhere. So were these guys just a product of the system in SF or are they good coaches in a bad organization?

I mean look at Dave Shula....he's doing well now..... just kidding.

Seriously though compare them to guys like Marty and Parcells who have won everywhere they have gone. Even Coughlin has the Giants going in the right direction.

And they've obviously got some serious locker room problems.

Garcia and Bly have both publicly pointed the finger at Harrington, and Garcia went on to say that he doubts the organizations ability to recruit and draft decent players.

Not that any of that is surprising, but to have players say that to the media points to some really big issues going between the players.

I saw the Dre Bly interview on Total Access, frankly I'm suprised it hasn't gotten more attention. He said in no uncertain terms that Harrington sucks and that its his fault the Lions have done poorly, not Mariucci's.

I remember the Giants firing Dan Reeves in large part because of the ineptitude of the infamous Dave Brown...the front office didn't want to admit their mistake on the player and made the coach the fall guy. Damn shame...

Mariucci took over a good team in SF and rode it into the ground before he left.

In Detriot he took over an average team and rode it into the ground before he left.

It is my hope that his next stop is Pittsburgh after Cowher falls dead from a heart attack during Chad Johnson's third TD reception celebration.

What?

1. Only two losing seasons in six seasons. In 1999 he had a 4-12 record due to a career ending injury to Steve Young -- that kinda changes things. And in 2000 their defense blew chunks while the offense was #6 -- offense is his specialty.

2. His final season, the 49ers were 10-6. Since then, through two head coaches they are 11-32.... can't say I blame the coach, but the management instead deserves much criticism for the SF fiasco.

3. Gets to Detroit and has to fix the mess left by Marty Mornhinweg -- the guy that drafted Harrington who's also Millen's guy, who it seems to appear, is the ultimate blame for the Lions fall into a river of crap.

Anyway, how was Detroit average? The two seasons prior to Mooch being hired as head coach they compiled a 5-27 record?

I just don't see why he ran either into the ground.

The problems in Detroit start higher up than the coach. During Matt Millen's reign, Detroit has had their worst record ever! That's saying something, especially considering some of the talent on the team. While I don't think Mariucci is that great of a coach, Matt Millen should look in the mirror when he talks about the problems the Lions are facing. Instead of growing into the role of GM like Ozzie Newsome did, he was promoted and totally skipped a lot of the front office stuff, scouting, etc. and this shows. Many of his decisions just leave you scratching your head.

Anyway, I don't believe that the firing of Mariucci is going to have much impact on the Bengals game in a couple weeks. The Bengals are simply too strong, even if the Lions play inspired ball for some reason.

I agree, b/c the only time adversity like this helps a team is if the players actually unite together. They are playing the blame game with their quarterbacks and now are really divided (well, as the media is projecting it).
