BoilersAndBengals Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Due to our safety situation:If we get ahold of Thomas Davis in the first round instead of Pollack, does the Colts game/season turn out any different?I know Ohalete's season would have been affected...maybe flipping burgers in Arizona. walzav29 Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Since I have been wrong every time I have 2nd guessed Marvin, I will say no. Pollack is going to be a stud. I was one of the guys who questioned drafting Perry, and he looks good. I will admit it. Marvin knows more than me. Unlike LeBeau, Coslet, and Shula. Don't give up on the season. Whacky things happen. Being 7-3 is alot better than 4-6. We're in good shape. Quote
Bengalbob Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Statistics aren't everything, but here's Thomas Davis' line so far . . . Year Team G Total Tckl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def2005 Carolina Panthers 10 22 18.0 4 1 0 0 0.0 0 0 0And DP's . . .Year Team G Total Tckl Ast Sacks Int Yds Avg Lg TD Pass Def2005 Cincinnati Bengals 8 14 13.0 1 1 0 0 0.0 0 0 1Very similar. My guess is that they both will become difference makers in their careers, but both are rookies and aren't ready to be destroyers . . . yet. Thomas Davis wouldn't be any better than Ohalete as a substitute for Madieu this year and I think David Pollack will definitely be better for us long term. Quote
bengalindian Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 I think Thomas Davis would have been a Bengal had he been there, but its in the past, and either of these players would have been the right choice. Would Thomas Davis be better than Ohalete? We don't know, and its pretty tough to assume. Quote
AGrizzlyBaer Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 i wanted one or the other, as of now idont know if it matters, btw boiler are you a purdue guy too? Quote
schweinhart Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Anytime you got your starting safeties out for the year on IR, anyone helps. Obviously some would help more than others.Despite all his very numerous eff ups so far this year, Ohalete isn't the sole reason the Bengals have lost the games they have this year. He sure hasn't helped, especially with the missed tackles in all three losses. Still, given the way things want down right before the season started with Herring going down for the year, he's the best they could do and I'm not going to b#tch about him because, believe or not, he has played well at times. But Ohalete is a situational safety at best. If he is a Bengals next year, he'd have to be what Mitchell is now. They need to get another safety of the Madieu type -- one who can cover like a CB and hit like a mini-linebacker. Good luck to the Bengals with that. Those types are few and far between. Quote
bengalindian Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 If Troy Polamalu played for the Bengals, the Bengals would be 9-1 right now. I love to dream. Quote

bengalboomer7 Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 From what I've heard, Davis has struggled mightily at the safety positon and is going to LB.Can't remember whre I heard that, though Quote

Fortunately the Bengals are winning, the boilers are having a rough one. Quote

From me. Quoting Len Pasquarelli. Davis was not going to solve this teams S issue, he was going to be a LB. Quote
AbeVigoda Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 Thomas Davis, SS+OLB, GeorgiaHeight: 6:00.6 Weight: 231 Negatives... Plays with reckless abandon, but needs to improve his plant-and-drive, as he will get a little too reckless and over-pursue. ... Shows good lateral agility, but is a little stiff in his hips and this is noticeable when he tries to change direction taking on the inside slot receivers. ... Adequate at timing his leaps, but struggles to look in the ball in over his shoulders or when his back is turned to the ball. ... Seems to want to attack and punish the ball carrier too much, taking away from his primary assignment -- searching out the ball.http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/20...OLB-Georgia.htmSounds alot like what we're running out there at SS every Sunday. BULLDOG28 Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 Thomas Davis is a player who was a good collegiate safety who is and will continue to be a pro linebacker. In my opinion, we're OK at linebacker and at this point in his career, he is not a better 'backer than Landon Johnson or Brian Simmons. Davis, was an "in the box" safety in college and was strong against the run, but was only marginal in pass coverage, which is a lot like Ohalete is now. By the way, OHALETE IS THE WORST STARTING SAFETY EVER FOR THE BENGALS! His coverage ability is terrible, his tackling worse and the penalties that are becoming weekly events have been a problem since he's been here. There is a reason that he was cut from the Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals in the past 16 months, two teams that finished at or near the cellar last year. Anthony Mitchell, who was a major factor for the Baltimore Ravens on defense, deserves a shot, at least by default. Hell, he's tied for the team lead in SACKS which shows he can at least make plays, sometimes. Quote

Hell, he's tied for the team lead in SACKS which shows he can at least make plays, sometimes. Not by a long shot is Ohalete the worst starting safety the Bengals have ever had It's no wonder why fans say he sucks because he's done some stupdi sh*t that's more highly visible than getting pinned by a block on a long run or getting torched on a pump fake for a long ball. But try watching what he does do when he's on the field and I think you'll be surprised by just how much he actually does do. He should play as well this week as he did last time vs. Ratbirds. It's easy to bash the safety when he's the last man standing between a ball carrier and a TD or big yardage, just like it was with Kim Herring when he takes angles that made him look like THE WORST STARTING SAFETY EVER FOR THE BENGALS. And there's no way in hell Mitchell remotely resembles an improvement over either of them. Quote
jjakq27 Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 http://www.nfl.com/draft/drafttracker/round/round1This is the third year in a row that the Bengals first round pick has had little or no impact on the team. Hopefully Pollack can show something before the end of the year. Lap said the other day that he's not sure if they will keep Pollack at LB or move him back to DE. He would have to gain weight to do so. He missed so much time this year and he guessed that they will give him another year of minicamps and training camp before they move him back to the line. Marcus Spears sure would look good in the middle though. Quote
