Spain Posted October 29, 2005 Report Share Posted October 29, 2005 OK ,Bengaldom Im tired of this player sucks , castrate this guy! Every time sunday roles around and we are gettin spanked on D. The problem with this D is that for the last 10 years we have been trying to run the three four. the 3-4 is a great defense but you need more special players to run it. We have been drafting LBs forever and we only hit on one of those draft picks. That was Takeo. Smith was drafted for the three four. Most of our high draft picks before Marvin were drafted to play the 3-4. This guys are not fitting Marvins new scheme.(justin Smith). Marvin has stated he is making this the Joker D, he just doesnt have his guys in there yet. Smith is probably the only guy that would start on another D line. It's not about strikers & midfielders, dude. We haven't been running a 3-4. We have been running a 4-3 since the earth cooled. We don't have a nose tackle. I think weve been leaning that way with all the LB's we've drafted these past 2 years. How many first day picks have we used? It seems like a fair fit to me. Landon Johnson and Brian Simmons were their only noteable backers, and Landon wasn't drafted to necessarily start, like Miller, they were drafted for depth and special teams, and are fast.A straight 3-4 defense takes a long term commitment, although the Bengals use variations of it like most teams against certain opponents and in certain situations.The Bengals' defenders aren't necessarily being used correctly IMO, and are not responding for whatever reason to the way they're being coached.They need to find a better way to use Landon, Simmons, Geathers and Justin Smith - they are all having down years and that just seems a bit too coincidental to me, to be a pure talent issue. Sox Posted October 30, 2005 Report Share Posted October 30, 2005 I think the D is easy to diagnose.We are two players short.The Bengals need a better SS,(and Madieu back),but even more importantly,they need a DT that can not only hold the point of attack,but get a push into the offensive backfield.Marvin Lewis likes athletic fast linebackers.That's fine,but if your DT is getting(Thornton)pushed 3-4 yards back,your linebackers are not being freed up to make plays.Be it free-agency,the draft,or trade,the Bengals MUST get better at DT in the off-season.
