Some relevant stats for the Steelers game

I was just curious to see how our teams match up so far this season in the stats. Some are surprising.

Time of Possession/Game

Cin: 33:02 (4th), Pit: 28:44 (25th) (this one surprised me a lot)

Yards/game

Cin: 381 (2nd), Pit: 322 (18th)

Passing yards/game

Cin: 257 (7th), Pit: 202 (21st)

Rushing yards/game

Cin: 124 (10th), Pit: 119 (13th)

Points/game

Cin: 25.8 (5th), Pit: 24.4 (10th)

Yards allowed/game

Cin: 317 (16th), Pit 295 (8th)

Passing Yards allowed/game

Cin: 200 (15th), Pit: 205 (17th)

Rushing Yards allowed/game

Cin: 117 (21st), Pit: 90 (6th)

Points allowed/game

Cin: 14 (4th), Pit: 16.4 (5th)

I've also heard that our scoring stats aren't impressive because of the teams we have faced. Here is how that breaks down though.

Pittsburgh's opponents are allowing 23.9 points/game. Since Pittsburgh is scoring just 24.4/game, their offense is basically average. Our opponents are allowing only 21.4 points/game, but we are scoring 25.8/game.

Pittsburgh's opponents are scoring 20.4 points/game... so it is impressive that they are only allowing 16.4/game. Cincy's opponents are scoring 15.8 points per game, so us allowing 14 points/game is slightly less impressive.

When it comes down to it, these teams are pretty evenly matched. We are 6-1, and the teams we have played have a total 12-21 record (36%). Pittsburgh is 3-2, and their opponents are 12-18 (40%).

All in all, I'm not sure how much these stats tell us, other than our offense is a lot better than theirs, but their rushing defense is a lot better than ours. I'd give us the edge at this point because it is in Cincy, and If that TOP stat holds true, we win this game.

I agree. TOP is a top stat for this game. Whoever wins it will do so because they can run the ball.

If we can run, we can pass and that adds up to points. If they can run (and I believe this is their game plan, to run the bus over and over till we stop him), then our O is sitting.

Bend/Don't Break D works if the other team is passing cuz the field eventually shrinks. Not so much in the running game.

Of course there is the turnover stat - one missing in your astute analysis (and one I believe we hold a LARGE advantage in). If we can keep the TOP stat close and win the TO battle, we win without question. If they dominate in either of these areas, we faulter.

Yes, I meant to include the turnover stat.

Cincy is 1st in the league with 21. 14 interceptions and 7 through fumble recoveries.

Pittsburgh is in a 5-way tie for 11th with 11 turnovers, 5 interceptions and 6 fumble recoveries.

On the other side of that we are tied for 2nd in giveaways with 5. 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles

Pittsburgh is 4th with 6, 3 interceptions, and 3 fumbles.

However, let it be known that before Roethlisberger got hurt, they had 0 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Maddox accounted for 4 of their 6 turnovers... in one game! So don't think that turnovers will play a huge part in this game. I doubt they will make many mistakes... and we haven't made mistakes either, including only 1 fumble lost in our last 14 quarters, and 0 interceptions for 19 straight quarters.

No none of those stats mean anything because the Bengals haven't "played anyone yet".

None of these stats mean anything as they're derived from games that are now long since past. Any given Sunday etc etc.

PS Cincyhokie - I saw the Dropkick Murphys in Edinburgh in March. They were OK but I thought the Bouncing Souls were much better. The God Awfuls were good fun too.
