HoosierCat
Setting aside the issue of whether taking a running back in the first round of the 2004 draft was the right move or not, a cardinal complaint about the pick was that the bengals had the opportunity to take a better back -- namely Stephen Jackson (now a Ram) or Kevin Jones (selected by Detroit). Why, many draft pundits around these parts wondered, did the bengals select the third-best RB available? The question lingered last year because Perry, sidelined with a sports hernia, could only watch as Jackson and Jones showed their stuff their rookie years. Now, with a quarter of the season under our belts and all three RBs playing, we can start to look at the numbers and see if the bengals really did pick the wrong guy.On the ground this year, Perry (3.5 ypc, 19/66) is averaging right between Jackson (3.7 ypc, 59/219) and Jones (3.3 ypc, 45/147). Through the air, Perry is averaging 7.4 yards per catch (16/119) vs. Jackson at 7 (11/77) and Jones at a tad under 5 (3/14). The one place he trails noticeably is TDs, where Perry has 0 vs. 3 for Jackson and 1 for Jones.Looks to me like the jury is still out... skyline
It is still out.I think Jackson is suffering at the hand of Martz, though. Last week they threw the ball 62 times and only rushed 15. What a moron...

Williams' suspension isn't going to help that, either. But Perry is holding his own so far, I think.

While the other two are being hampered by various situations, Perry is also being slowed down by the fact that he's not the starter on his team.I'd call it dead even thus far... Stripes
I'd say Jones and Jackson are both currently ahead of Perry, because of their performances last season. I don't think that if Perry were a starter, that he would have the same success they have had, despite the given statistics. He seems to be a lesser but good Brian Westbrook, but I don't know if that would work as well as a starter as the other two.
AGrizzlyBaer
can we toss the two jones into the debate, julias and greg, just thought i might bring them in
ArmyBengal
You have to take into consideration the fact that those other backs might not bode so well in the AFC North either. Perry will do well and maybe even better in the long run due to the fact that he has a bruising between the tackle back like Rudi to help out and confuse opposing defenses. I think the jury is still out, but I'm glad he's here !!!WHODEY !!!
Stripes
can we toss the two jones into the debate, julias and greg, just thought i might bring them in From what I have seen so far, Julius would go right at the top of this discussion, but Greg hasn't really been up the level of the other four. schweinhart
Looks to me like the jury is still out...Both Dillon and Bennett were gone by the time of the draft. Rudi had proven himself but not completely and certainly not as a receiving threat. But RB in the 1st was still the wrong pick in that draft IMO. They could have had Meldewe Moore or Michael Turner later.Dealing down and passing on Jackson worked well for the Bengals. But if it was an RB, Perry made the most sense as a 3rd down back w/ some change of pace. As for as every down runners, all 3 Joneses and Tatum Bell should prove to be better runners than Perry, especially between the tackles. As for Greg Jones not being at the level of Chris Perry....definitely not as a receiver but I think blocking wise, we'll all get a get look at what that 250 pound mouthsmasher can do as a FB. Greg Jones might not evolve into the feature back in Jacksonville but he'd be an interesting one in the AFC North. But on the whole, the receiving threat of Perry is a boost for the Bengals offense. He's got great hands and is a mismatch vs. LBs
