backerman
I saw that Odell had a great game and NFL.com said Pollack recorded 6 solo tackles. I know he doesn't start (yet), so in what situations did he play? 3rd downs, nickel packages etc. And how did he look? Did he make anyplays that meant anything or do anything impressive? Or were is 6 tackles just a result of him being unblocked or what.?Any information would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

I wasn't watching just one player, either when watching live or when I watched the tape, but I know Pollack played both DE and OLB. He looks to be a split second behind everyone else because of the holdout, but he still tied for the team high in tackles and pressured the QB at least one time. In my opinion every play means something and it's not very often a player will go unblocked at any point during the game, so I'd say he had a decent first game, all things considered. I just love the fact that two rookies led us in tackles. That bodes well for the future of our defense.

derekshank
I think this is huge and a great sign on whats in the future for this defense. No doubt. When you consider the fact that this was the very first NFL game for both of these players, they will only get better. They will still have momentary lapses, but it looks quite promising. I don't expect them to really start playing well until mid-season. But if they can get there by week 6 or 7, and pull off wins by this inferior competition early, we could be looking at a very good team... THIS YEAR. No more "Wait until next year" crap... although, we will probably have to wait until next year to see a real superbowl drive.
walshfan
Just a clue on how fast a learner Pollck is is the fact that he's playing right now after that long holdout... The Vikes drafted Erasmus James and he isnt playing due to his long holdout and is behind in the playbook and learning their schemes.. backerman
Thanks for the info guys. I hope Odell can remains consistent. Just as a word of warning however, when at Georgia he was known for being outstanding at times while disappearing other times. Hopefully he won't follow suite with the Bengals. Maybe Marvin can keep him more focused on a week to week basis. I always felt that coach Richt didn't get everything he could out of the talent he had. If Odell can keep his level of play consistent he should be a Pro bowler in the not so distant future.
dave
As for the future of the D, you can take it a step further: the four leading tacklers were first- or second-year players who combined for 25 tackles and two interceptions (Odell, Pollack, Madieu, Ratliff). Sweet.

Sweet.the mark of a good defense is when the tackling is spread out.. We had 5 or 6 players with 5 or more tackles... Id rather have that than one guy with 10 or 12 tackles....It means everyone is producing ...
Chucktkd
After them came 5 db's ranking 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th in tackling. That says 2 things: First there are too many tackles being made by the db's and second that the two, Thurman and Pollack did signifcantly better than the rest of the lb's and dl's. Rodney Harrison leads the Pats in tackles most of the tlme...tackles depend on what scheme the defense plays most on a given day.. I thought our defense adjusted well after the first series and held their own outside of Thurman's mistake..As for the DB's making tackles .. Browns were behind and thowing allot so the DB's will make allot more tackles than if we were behind right?

Sweet. Does that paragraph get anyone else completely jacked up? Geez, we actually have a great future to look forward to! On both sides of the ball! I don't know how long some of you have been diehard Bengal fans, but for me it's been since day one. I have a photo of me taken in 1968 when I was 5 years old, standing beside our mailbox in Germantown, Ohio, dressed in a complete Bengals uniform -- pants, jersey and helmet. That's how long I've loved the Bengals, which means I've endured some hard times. But that's all in the past now. WHO DEY!!!
