MNF 2-fer Sept. 19

In my opinion, NOT even close to a good move by Tagliabue and the NFL. Not only do the Saints lose the homefield (or any chance of) advantage, but the game could have been used as a pick-me-up for all the Saints fans down in Louisiana and surrounding areas who could have made the trek out to San Antonio or some place close. How are those people going to watch the game, and shouldn't that have been considered at all?

Does anyone know who, or why this decision was made? I just don't understand the logics behind it at all.

From what I heard on the news, the Louisiana Superdome will have to be scrapped and rebuilt. As far a moving the game to where their fans might still attend, I'm just not so sure many Saint's fans are even thinking about football right now. Maybe in a month or so, but right now most of these folks have nothing. If I had nothing, until I had secured food and lodging, and a job, going to any kind of game wouldn't close to making it on my intinerary. Besides I could never enjoy it until these basic needs of life had been resolved. Could you?

You think the NFL could have talked with Dallas or Houston about hosting the Saints' game ... Even if the Cowboys or Texans were home that weekend, they weren't playing on Monday night. I don't understand the move to Giants stadium either.

You think the folks with the Nokia Sugar Bowl are a bit frazzled, too. The Super Dome is host to the New Years' weekend game. and where might that game land now that the Super Dome is unavailable? Gee, you think Giants stadium is available that weekend? BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

They're playing the Giants as it is. At least one of the teams should play it at home, although I guess it's a crappy way to get an extra home game on the schedule. I hope the majority of the gate reciepts for this extra home date will be donated to relief agencies. It would be the right thing to do don't you think?

I totally don't understand the move. By doing this, the Saints will start the season with three road games. It appears that the NFL is more interested in money from an extra Giants home game than giving the Saints some stability and their fans something to cheer about.

I don't care if the Saints wind up in San Antonio or in Baton Rouge or Houston or wherever, but please let them stay somewhere close to home. The weird thing is that San Antonio is ready to for the Saints. The evacuees from New Orleans are at Kelly USA, a former air force base, not the Alamodome. The Saints are already practicing here. There are people here who've already said that they'd go to games and support the team. The team is already up-rooted. Let them find a spot near home and settle the matter. Yeesh. Stupid NFL.

The evacuees from New Orleans are at Kelly USA, a former air force base, not the Alamodome.

There are huge numbers of evacuee's from New Orleans scattered all over the country right now, and more are being flown to new places as we speak. I'm sure Kelly has a good percentage of New Orleans former population there, being so close in proximity, and I also agree the Saint's should eventually relocate there until things are resolved in Louisiana, and it is a disadvantage to lose a "home game," but it's a decision with many other factors that will be made in due time. I'm sure moving it to the Meadowlands was a cinch with one team involved already contracted with the site to play it's games there during this time frame.

But all that stuff aside, do you honestly think most of these people give two s**ts about something as comparitively meaningless as a football game right now? From what I've seen these people talk about and countless statements they've made to the media, the only thing they're ready to cheer about is the next meal they get, the next shirt on their backs, and the next roof over their heads.

Personally, if I was in the boat these people are currently in, and will be for some time into the forseeable future, (they just mentioned on the news it may be MONTHS before New Orleans is drained of all the water that's flooding it!) there would be things much more important than going to a football game. What good does it do anyway? Once the game is over, they're still homeless aren't they? They need solutions, not diversions.

My point is I just don't see these people as ready to cheer about the Saints, or any other sporting event right now. They will be eventually of course. And hopefully when they do the team will be temporarily settled in San Antonio (BTW is that where they hold their training camp?) and ready to accomodate them in all the cheering they can possibly do.

From what I have been hearing on TV, it seems as though the NFL may use this game as a mini-telethon in order to make money for disaster relief. That is why they start it on ABC and move it to ESPN

I don't know how true that may be, but I don't know if that's a good idea.

I realize that most of those fans won't be going to the game because they have much more important things on their minds. But atleast you can agree with this. The Saints players have all their families down there too, and so do a lot of people in the organization. What you're doing by taking them away from New Orleans is separating families. It's a tough thing to do is play football a thousand miles away from home when all you can think about is your family and all the other people you left behind. I just don't think it was right from any perspective to take the game so far away when there were a couple other choices much closer. Who cares if it sells out? The fans and players of the NFL certainly shouldn't, and shouldn't that have any affect on this decision?

Needed to be scrapped before the storm...Ever been to a game there? Not a good venue.

But my people on the ground in the NO say it will just be totally refurbished over a period of 2-3 years.

So what does that mean for the Saints on the meantime???

They are getting the NFL shaft...

Saints fans are an interesting breed. That town is 100% football....Just ask the Hornets...

True, people have died and the basics are thin, but a couple more "home" games on the road and you'll be hearing from Saint's fans.....

Look, this game, and every other game this season, cannot be played at home. Sorry, but the stadium is fubar. Play the games where you can.

The Saints are a road team this year, period. They may end up playing EVERY game away.

The league, and the owners, should refund ticket owners money, and let them use it to rebuild their homes.

I see them playing in Baton Rouge by half way through the season....

Where? Does the city have a stadium they can sell tickets for?

Are people who are in the midst of rebuilding their homes going to take the time to drive several hours away to watch a game? I doubt it.

I totally realize that many of the fans have other things on their minds, and have lives to rebuild. I know that there won't be spending their money on a Saints game. However, there is a value in keeping the team in the general area. First, the players need to be able to be with their families and not spend their entire season on the road. The situation is hard enough as it is, and it'd only be worse for those families to go without their husbands and fathers for days on end at a time like this. Second, there's pride in seeing the team be able to go on somewhere in the area. Just seeing something that simple is able to boost spirits and give some hope. Even if it is only a diversion, sometimes that's what's needed -- just something to take your mind off things for a while. Down here, we've gotten requests recently for books, coloring books, etc for the kids so they'd have something to do while waiting. It's good for the adults as well to be able to get their mind off of things if but for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon.

I don't believe that Baton Rouge is a good site for the games. Baton Rouge is on the front-line of the relief effort and that city is already dealing with a lot. For them, I see it as more of a burden rather than a benefit, at least right now. Dallas, Houston and San Antonio should be able to provide for and support the team. It just seems to me that moving the team to a far away location for this season or having them play all their games on the road is just like kicking someone who's already down. Sigh.

P.S. To whoever asked, the Saints are practicing here right now, but their regular training camp is somewhere else.

Thank you. I just wish that the people in charge would realize this. It's certainly the least they can do.
