Bengals | Ridgeway Claimed Off Waivers

Wed, 31 Aug 2005 13:37:52 -0700

The Cincinnati Bengals have acquired WR Dante Ridgeway off waivers of the St. Louis Rams.

According to KFFL...whoever the hell he is.

ala Bengals.com

Bengals acquired rookie Ball State wide receiver Dante Ridgeway on waivers from St. Louis and cut tackle Belton Johnson to make room. The 5-11, 212-pound Ridgeway gives them two sixth-round receivers from this year's draft. The Rams picked him two slots after Tab Perry. At Ball State, Ridgeway set school career records for receptions (238), receiving yards (3030) and touchdowns (22).

I cannot believe they cut Belton Johnson. Are they insane? Now, for sure, Crazy Marvin must be held accountable! If someone would be so kind as to draft a petition seeking this insane man's removal, I will have Belton Johnson sign it!

This is a somewhat interesting move but proly results in him being released.

It looks like the Bengals are concerned about slot receivers. Despite the depth they got at the position, after Housh they fall off at slot.

K-Dub has proven over and over again that he doesn't get good separation over the middle and isn't a reliable target as a possession receiver. K-Dub primarily runs split w/ sideline gos and other deep routes or quick outs for YAC, sideline outs, and stops. Walter pretty much has been running what K-Dub ran.

Henry looks like Chad's backup to me, which makes Russell expendable since that's all he was other than a very mediocre KR.

So if it's just 6 WRs, that leaves Perry, Broussard, and now Ridgeway. Broussard has impressed me out of the slot so far this pre-season, including the near TD he snagged in the red zone that was called Inc. Plus, he looks like he could develop into a pretty wicked PR.

Perry has done next to nothing but did look the part as a KR who might be able to transition to a big target slot WR.

The Bengals need to try to rotate these 3 in the slot as much as possible vs. Colts to really gauge much. But Ridgeway will proly be fairly safe on the practice squad, more so than either Broussard (who Carolina plucked last year) or Perry.

W/o question Housh is their slot receiver.

It's after Housh where slot falls off.

Nice to have the luxury of thinking about who's the back up slot receiver, though, ain't it? B)

Based on the available receivers, I'd say the best backup slot option is actually not a WR at all, but Chris Perry or Kenny Watson. Maybe even Matt Schobel.

That 6th WR spot seems to ultimately boil down IMO to a combination of slot receiving and return skills. Jamall Broussard as a PR or Tab Perry as a KR.

Keiwan sure looked like the PR late last season. But KR should be up for grabs if Russell is viewed as expendable as I'm thinking he is.

The edge for the 6th WR goes to Tab Perry, but a great receiving effort by Broussard vs. Colts could significantly factor into that decision.

After Broussard got snatched off the practice squad last year by Carolina, all he did was return punts. Fox & Company obviously didn't think much of him as receiver and he's got to prove himself a capable enough of a receiver to make the Bengals roster this year.
