schnarfer Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 We need to get a force on the D-line now or else we are going to get dominated upfront...It is time to use our equity and quit playing for the future...Lewis will make the change my next week... Quote
Dadraftnick Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 If the Eagles want more for Corey Simon and are not sure about Warrick's health what about trading them T.J.---If the Bengals pick Simon up they will have to cut salary anyway.--What about DT Thornton OR Robinson and T.J. for DT Corey Simon and (S Sean Considine or DE Jerome McDougal or DE Hugh Douglas S Michael Douglas.----Or Trade T.J. straight up for DT Hollas ThomasT.J. has not looked that good in pre season anyway and the Bengals have too many WR's Between--Kevin Walter,K-Wash, P-dub,Russell, Henry they can find someone to play WR across from Johson. The defense needs a guy like Simon or Hollas and its smarter to pay the money to a DT than a WR when you have so many good WR's Quote
JPW Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 We already had a Simon for picks deal worked out about a month ago, the rub was that Simon wouldn't agree to a reasonable contract. Quote
JPW Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 WTF is with all these Simon threads ...We had a deal worked for him and so did the Ravens, his CONTRACT was the Problem in both cases. The guy wants to break the bank of whatever team he plays for.And by the way the deal we had involved giving them a draft pick for him. CantStop85 Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 the Bengals have too many WR's I think this statement ruined the credibility of all your prior and future statements. Quote
CantStop85 Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 There's no way we could get a "reasonable" contract worked out for Corey Simon. Besides, I don't want the DT version of Corey Dillon. Quote
andybren Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 ...its smarter to pay the money to a DT than a WR when you have so many good WR's How many good WR's do we really have? And by good, I mean could be #1 or #2 for a team that didn't already have CJ and TJ.Warrick? Washington? Henry? Walter?Which of these guys is a legitimate starter by Sept. 11? For all the talk of a deep talent pool at the position, the argument has always boiled down to who was going to win the #4, #5, and #6 spots. That hardly means we're in a position to trade TJ. Quote

BlainThePain Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 I'm sick of seeing these threads about us offering a kings ransom for Corey Simon. We had a deal worked out and he wanted too much money. I think the Eagles offered him 5 mil a year and he turned it down. Simon isn't worth anything more than 4mil a year and even that is alot. He always comes into camp out of shape and sucks for the first 4 or 5 games of the season when we would need him the most, he busts out in the middle of the season and plays at probowl form, but the last 4 or 5 games of the season he wears out and goes to s**t again. I remember seeing someone say we should offer Housh for Simon. Whoever thinks that should be hit in the head with a tack hammer and put out of their misery. Quote
turningpoint Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 well if we wanted 3-5 mill a season i wouldn't mind us trading simon for hoosh. Quote
Stripes Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 I don't want Simon at ALL. UGH, we don't need a DT! Quote
PhillyGirl Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 notice neither played tonight.....something is stirring in cincy uhhhh, nice try. Simon has held out all camp. He'll be back to play for week one. Possibly back this week. Quote
InsultComicDog Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 It is not inconceivable that the Eagles will release Corey Simon outright at the final cutdown.Let's look at the Eagles' situation for a moment.Darwin Walker, Sam Rayburn, and Hollis Thomas are all starting-quality. Mike Patterson was the Eagles' first round draft pick this year and looks like he will also be in the rotation. That's really all they need right there, though they also have the older veteran Paul Grasmanis (probably soon-to-be-cut and picked up by someone who needs a decent backup DT) and they have 7th-rounder Keyonta Marshall who seems to be practice-squad-bound. Corey Simon is the best of the group, when he is in shape and playing at his best. But is he in shape? He has a reputation for reporting overweight and not in good playing condition, then taking five or six games to get his game on.They aren't going to keep him around unless they feel he is critical to their Super Bowl aspirations. If the Eagles feel that Corey Simon isn't worth the $5M+ franchise tender, he is a spare part. Why would they keep him around? I suspect they have other uses for the money and the cap space. If nothing else, they just use the money to frontload some new contracts for players they would like to re-sign such as Westbrook, Michael Lewis, etc.Furthermore, cutting him loose would also be a signal from the Eagles to the team that a franchise tender is no guarantee of a job if the tendered players don't sign and report. HoosierCat Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Score one for the dog (see previous post):Eagles | Remove Tag from Simon; He's Free NowSun, 28 Aug 2005 17:27:15 -0700The Philadelphia Eagles announced they have withdrawn the franchise tag designation on DT Corey Simon. Simon now becomes an unrestricted free agent. "We appreciate all that Corey has done for this organization over the last five years," said head coach Andy Reid. "With the great amount of depth and talent we have along the defensive line, we chose to give Corey an opportunity to sign with another team." Quote

HoosierCat Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I would love to add Simon. He's not Superman, but he's definitely better than anything we have. Or at least he is when he wants to be.However...at last report he was basically demanding to be the highest-paid DT in the NFL. The Bengals, Ravens, and Biills were all supposedly interested in trading for him, with both Cincy and Baltimore both reaching agreements with the eagles -- but both unwilling to meet Simon's terms.I don't see him in stripes. schnarfer Posted August 29, 2005 Author Report Posted August 29, 2005 Bengals need to shake things up...Sign Simon no matter what he takes...His presence in the middle unprecedented...our run and rush defense is terrible..more pressure up front means less time to pick us apart...We have athletic corners not neccesarily great cover corners..quick throws will mean that they can make plays...It is time Marvin Lewis landed a quality free agent just to give us some street value as a place to play....This would be a great move and incentive for the Bengals defense.. walshfan Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 uh, can he play safety too???He's going to want to much money.....the next round of cuts might see a safetly emerge that can help us..Id rather fill that position first... Quote
redsfan2 Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Browsed the Eagles message board the last time this came up, and non of them seemed too terribly upset at the thought of Mr. Simon departing. Just me, but if his own team ( and fans ) don't care if he leaves then why would we want him ........ no to mention the fact that " it takes him 5 or 6 games to get in shape " ... and we're looking for way to get off to a fast start. Just doesn't sound like a match made in heaven to me. Quote
walshfan Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 next round of cuts grab a safety....thas what we need. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Simon could be great but it will cost and there's risk w/ him. He'd be an immediate upgrade over what the Bengals got now if he gets on the field. But I don't see it happening unless his price comes way down to about $5 mill to sign spread over 4 yrs and a $1 mill salary for this year.Safety ought to be targeted, especially if Herring is gone for the year. And proly even if he isn't. The Bengals had a shot at Aaron Francisco off the wire but let him slide and the Jets grabbed him.I haven't seen any other potentially good safeties pop up yet. I belive Tony Dixon and Antuan Edwards are still out there, but I can't see where either of them helps much over what's there now. Quote

Because there is still a pretty strong demand for DT's around the league, he won't come "dirt cheap" but he'll play somewhere, and for a lot less than he thought he was going to get. His previous outrageous demands no longer apply. Quote

Keep in mind that the Eagles are loaded at the position so they really don't need Corey Simon and are just about as good without him.But most teams aren't so blessed and Corey could help a team like that. InsultComicDog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 If I had to lay odds on it I would guess that the team that is most likely to sign Corey Simon is Baltimore. Quote
