HairOnFire Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Odell isn't playing this game. Crap. I think I knew that but had somehow repressed the memory. Perhaps I had just read one of Black Jesus's post as was still suffering from one of those small strokes they cause. Who knows, but since I'm in a yammering mood let me add one more to the list to replace my O'Dell mistake. I'll be watching to see if the Bengals can take advantage of that rubber mechanized Rockette leg by blocking a punt. Quote
BENGAL Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 I heard that Tab Perry is injured therefore not playing in tonights game... Quote
Semper_Fi_Dawg Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Fully expecting for Pollack to make a sack from the sideline. Anything less and I will be disappointed. Quote
HoosierCat Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 But truth be told I think Palmer leans too heavily on his connection with Chad and I'd like to break him of a bad habit. Having said that I will now put my helmet on and await the word bombs that are sure to be tossed in my direction. :player: No bombs here, but I don't see it as a big issue. Palmer was kind of Chad-happy the first half of last season, but if you look at the last few games he played, esp. the Baltimore and NE games, he was starting to spread the ball around a lot more. That said, I have no problems with resting Chad tonight. Quote

It was also Palmer's first game as a starter. The next week they blew the Patriots out at PBS. A similar result tonight would make me feel alot better about this group as a whole. Quote
jditty47 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 i just want to see warrick play, pollack if he does play - which im guessing he wont, palmer not throwing a int. that is all. Quote

schweinhart Posted August 19, 2005 Report Posted August 19, 2005 Time to knock off some Deadskin heads and watch the Bengals O get the flash of dominance back they showed in the 1st half last year at Fed Ex.The Skins are poised as the heir apparent of futility in the NFL and it should be no different tonight. But this game should be a good booster to get the offense on track.Defense wise, just give the effort. The team they're playing isn't indicative of the tests that await them. But it'll be interesting to watch strongside LB and the DTs. Jumpy Jr. vs. Samuels should be a good battle. Some of the Snyderbrenner casualties that ML picked up should come out strong for this one -- Kenny Watson, Rashad Bauman, Cliff Russell, Kori Dickerson, and Greg Scott as they battle for roster spots and PT.Oh yes....above all else -- the return of P-Dub and a chance for a shot to either lay out Sean Taylor or spit in his face. thepudgester Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 I'm watching all the rookies and 2nd year players in particular. If I was to put them in order I would have to say...1. Odell Thurman2. Chris Perry3. Chris Henry4. Carson Palmer (2nd year in action)5. Quincy Wilson (I'm pulling for him to win the #3 job)Well as a little prediction, Bengals 24 Redskins 20Also as a note: Next week I will provide a lot of coverage on the Bengals @ Eagles game, I am lucky enough to be making the trip down to the Linc for that one. 3 points off... HairOnFire Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 What I'm looking for? Vast improvement from Kyle Larson. Marvin pimped him as one of the most improved players from last season and he responded with a miserable effort against the Pats. I haven't seen anything that flat since my first date. More of the same from the starting defensive line. Seriously, I had no complaints with any of the starters against the run or the pass. Please step it up O'Dell. You looked great against the Pats only if the viewer didn't look closely. Eliminate mistakes. I want to see Pollack on the sidelines wearing a Bengal uniform but no pads. A view Askew? This guy needs to start showing something and if he does the long-term outlook for this defense improves dramatically. As for the offense, I'd like to see Kelley Washington have a big night, P-Dub doing enough to put our minds at ease, and I wouldn't mind seeing Chris Perry flash a move that injuries one of the OTHER teams linebackers. If I quote myself do I have to write in the 3rd person....'cause HairOnFire doesn't do that? Larson - Much better but not there yet. In fact, I'd keep the name of the Redskins backup punter on file. Starting D-Line - Not as much consistent pass rush as against the Pats. In fact, it was pretty poor at times. Thornton seems much improved from last season and Robinson continues to look like a substantial upgrade. Both DE's looked like they were held in control for the most part. Smith continues to shine against the run and his backside pursuit is pretty remarkable. Best of all if the graphic shown at halftime was correct the Redskins were held to just 37 yards rushing. O'Dell - Bobcat lied to me. O'Dell played and IMHO was much improved. He seemed to be everywhere in the early going but looked to be playing under much better control. Pollack - Nothing to see here. Please move along. Askew - Didn't attempt to zero in on him but wasn't impressed by what I saw. Couldn't have played more than a few snaps and looked like he was being tossed around. Washington - Nice. Would have loved to have seen him get more chances but he made his presence felt and the squirrel managed to do what Housh couldn't. Warrick - The Titanic probably isn't as rusty as P-Dub. Nice to see him out there, but it's hard to say more than that. Perry - The screen pass has finally returned to Cincy after a prolonged ten-year absence. About time! Perry still goes down as if he was shot upon first contact, and he had no more luck running between the tackles than Rudi did, but he's flashing the speed needed to get to the edge. Best of all for two weeks in a row he's managed to stay off the injury list. All things considered I'm betting it won't be long now before the most girlish of Bengals fans moisten their panties over this kid. Quote

HoosierCat Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 Best of all if the graphic shown at halftime was correct the Redskins were held to just 37 yards rushing. Given that Portis was sidelined for this game I wouldn't get too excited about that...our best ought to be able to stuff their backups.Had Ramsey been a touch more accurate he would have shredded our starting secondary. I kept hearing Kim Herring's name being called in bad contexts, and it sounds like Deltha reverted a bit to his old "risk-taking" behavior. K2 appeared to have a mixed night as well.Odell definitely showed improvement, which is precisely what I wanted to see.The starting o-line...ugh. Yes, Palmer stunk early but he seemed to have Redskins in his face every play. At least it appears his new more svelt, nimble self is better at avoiding guys who are coming in unblocked...sheesh.Good night for K-wash, K-walt (if K-wash is the squirrel, does that make K-walt the chipmunk?), the TEs, Perry. Good to see Ghaicuic come in fairly early and get some experience, sounds like things picked up once he came in, tho I don't know what was left on Washington's defense by the second quarter. All in all...better than last week...but still a lot less impressive than I'd hoped. Whur CHad At? Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 I saw Pollack in pads with Odell and Jumpy. He was with them all night, cuz they are prob. his only friends. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 A view Askew? This guy needs to start showing something and if he does the long-term outlook for this defense improves dramatically. It looked like he has some push on pass rush, showed adequate balance and pursuit vs. run, and got his hand up on a pass....But i had a hard time telling when Askew (96) and Shaun Smith (66) were in. Askew is taller but they've got similar build. More Askew is needed. Quote
schweinhart Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 Perry - The screen pass has finally returned to Cincy after a prolonged ten-year absence. About time! All things considered I'm betting it won't be long now before the most girlish of Bengals fans moisten their panties over this kid. I wouldn't let Perry hit their G-spots just yet.....Based on how the personnel were used last night, Rudi is the starting RB and Kenny Watson is still the 3rd down back. Perry backs up them both.I will say the screen pass is a nice addition. It was rarely used last year by CP. Perry is effective at it but should watch the tape of Watson's 39 yard screen pass play last night and compare it to his own 16 yd screen pass catch vs. Patriots last week. Got to wait for your blockers downfield then make the cut back inside instead of sprinting for the sideline if you want that extra 20 yds.Perry is not effective at running between the tackles yet and won't ever be unless he improves his leg drive and foot work in traffic ala Willis MacGahee and picks up much greater leg strength. He's another 2 years away from contending for a starting job but will most likely be an adequate 3rd down back at some point this season before taking over the role completely next year. Quote

Now I probably won't get any at all, right? Let's all admit it, the kid is Chad-happy. I don't know about flak, but Chad has been open deep whether doubled or not whenever Palmer threw to him. If Palmer makes the kind of throws to Chad that he did back-to-back to Housh and K-Dub, Chad scores 20 TDs this year. I think the problem is that it's harder to time the throws to Chad because he flat out flies. As long as there's no contact after 5 yds in NFL, no one can cover Chad Johnson. Quote

At least it appears his new more svelt, nimble self is better at avoiding guys who are coming in unblocked...sheesh.I was very afraid of our secondary. Deltha O'Neal looked confused, giving up a long, floater completion that should have easily been swatted. That long touchdown by Ramsey early was a complete breakdown. The safety play looked bad overall. THankfully, T. James looks fine.I don't know how much to blame the O-line, the Redskins were blitzing constantly. Don't know 1) how much of the problem was Palmer's responsibility to shift protection at the line, and 2) how much is just unavoidable because of how many blitzers the Redskins were throwing at him. He better get used to it, because he'll see it a lot in the AFC North. You beat it by getting rid of the ball quick and calling the occasional screen, and both approaches worked for the Bengals last night.I'm more worried about his timing with CJ - there were two throws where he was open, and it didn't happen. The first throw to CJ looked like it was over the wrong shoulder, but the long bomb at the end of the 1st quarter, Chad just didn't get to the right spot. He seemed to be having too much fun running a triple move route.Hopefully it's all kinks that get worked out now. I'm glad the Redskins blitzed Palmer like they did. Quote
