Healthy Perry an asset

Lewis pleased running back has strong showing vs. New England

An "I-told-you-so" expression rose ever so slightly on Marvin Lewis' face late Friday night when the topic turned to Chris Perry...

Perry thrilled the large Paul Brown Stadium crowd with his rare combination of quickness and power...

"He's such a talented football player with his ability to make people miss," the Bengals coach said of Perry. "He's a big and fast man. He can cut with the football. He's impressive."...

He joins an already potent offensive array of skill players...

Perry is LIGHTNING to Rudi Johnson's THUNDER...

As Perry kept trying unsuccessfully last season to get on the field - he would wince in pain trying to run and cut with the ball during practice - many Bengals fans kept track of the running backs the Bengals could have drafted instead: St. Louis' Steven Jackson, Detroit's Kevin Jones and Dallas' Julius Jones...

The Bengals never lost faith in Perry, and the tailback's early showing in training camp and the preseason justifies the confidence...

Perry impressed his teammates, but not himself. He said he's not yet in good football shape and doesn't have his legs under him...

"... I need to make the second (defender) miss. The first guy is pretty easy. The second guy gets a little more difficult."...

Johnson and Perry will present problems for defenses. Johnson ran six times - primarily between the tackles - for 40 yards...

It's not difficult to envision a ball-control offense in which Perry and Johnson account for 40-plus touches a game...

"I know he was excited to get out there," Johnson said. "Everything he did in training camp, he did out there tonight."...

It's up to offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski and quarterback Carson Palmer to distribute the ball to the skill players...

"It's great. It's a great change of pace," Palmer said. "You've got Rudi Johnson that gets in there and just wears the defense out. He's just so physical. Then all of a sudden you have Fast Jack Back that can run on the outside and run outside the backfield. He can get the ball to the edges of the defense."

Perry provides a taste of his talent

By Chick Ludwig

Dayton Daily News

CINCINNATI | When he's healthy, Chris Perry is more than a tailback. He's a blur — running, cutting and racing downfield, and weaving through traffic like the lead sedan in a car chase in a Steve McQueen movie.

The Bengals' 2004 first-round draft pick showed tantalizing glimpses of what he can do, and what he means to the club...

Thought to be damaged goods, he's proving to be a devastating weapon...

Perry said he's only "75 or 77" percent in terms of his conditioning. "I'm still trying to get my legs back,"...

What's it going to be like when he's 100 percent?

"I don't know," he added. "I'm looking forward to it, too. So be on the lookout."

His teammates are looking forward to Perry's presence and production in the lineup. With his size, speed and slashing running style, an ability to cut back and keep accelerating, he's a complement to sledgehammer Rudi Johnson.

"It's a great change of pace for us offensively," quarterback Carson Palmer said. "You've got Rudi, who gets in there and just wears the defense out. He runs guys over and is just so physical. Then all of a sudden you have a fast scat back in Chris that can run routes on the outside, run routes out of the backfield, run the ball out of the backfield, and get the ball to the edges of the defense. He's just so explosive."

The Bengals used to deploy what they called a "Jet Package" that featured two tailbacks at the same time.

There was Ickey Woods and James Brooks, then Corey Dillon and Ki-Jana Carter.

Next up: Rudi & Chris. Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Thunder and Lightning.

"Part of our job, as coaches, is to get those guys on the field at the same time," running backs coach Jim Anderson said. "That's the thing about our offense. We're creative enough and innovative enough to do it.

"Chris has excellent hands. But the thing we can't forget, too, is he's an extraordinary runner. When we get him doing both, he can really help us offensively and balance our attack."

Sounds good to Perry.

"Whatever they need," he said. "I have no problem lining up back there with Rudi. That's the coaches putting their heads together and getting us out there for the betterment of the team. Hopefully, it'll come true. But if it doesn't, I'll take whatever role they give me."

Sorry about starting a new thread.

But I am a just sick and tired of people pitting Rudi and Perry against one another.

Just think right now, how much better off we would be had we not resigned rudi johnson, and had instead used the money wisely, getting a DB or DL in his place. Or better yet, traded him, we would have been talking super bowl right now. But no, they listened to the fans, and now we are talking about how to split carries between 2 RBs that would be starters elsewhere.

Maybe we should sign Drew Brees next year, and split time between 2 qbs!

So the only real question mark remaining about Perry then is what Carson Palmer thinks of him. Is he Fast Jack, or merely fast scat? Let the debate begin.

I think we are better off with both because Rudi really isn't breaking the bank, and no other teams can claim 1-2 punch like this..It is somewhat similar to what ATL tried but they failed greatly

The man that started this thread said he was sick of the anti Rudi or anti Perry banter. You are excluded.

Rudi and Perry the best 1-2 punch in the AFC North? You betcha.

Jerome and Duce who?

It's too tough on fans to live in the past. I'm sure that the plan was to have Perry play well last year, let Rudi walk, spread his salary money on the D, and watch Perry grow into an all-pro. Life and football are never so simple.

Let's just be glad Perry is playing at last. I would be interested to hear the thoughts of the first poster if Perry rips another hole in his stomach next week. It sure will be nice to have a bell cow in the backfield instead of relying on Watson, Wilson, or whoever we could pick up from NFL Europe.

Remember: Depth is never a problem as long as a team is winning.

I can't believe that this can be seen as a bad thing. One gets injured, GREAT replacement. We're in a position to kill some time cause of a lead, incredible ability to do so. We want to run a sweep, Perry, we want to run up the gut, Rudi, we want to make the other team think we're running a sweep and instead we go up the middle, Perry. Visa versa, Rudi. 4 man reciever set with a fifth reciever in the backfield, Perry. Oh wait, there's always the possible threat in Jeremi Johnson too.

And as far as DBs (other than SS), I'm pretty confident in Deltha, Keiwann, Madieu, Tory and even some of our other guys like Brandon Williams.

And as far as the D-line goes, why don't you wait and see how Askew, Justin Smith (yeah I know, but now he's on his natural side), Langston Moore and Bran Robinson pan out before thinking that an incredible 1-2 offensive ground (and now air) punch is a bad thing to have.

they listened to the fans?

that's a new one, pushy

1 preseason game a 16 game starter does not make.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bengals 2-back attack offense turn into mainly a rushing oriented, ball control type unit, with the occasional deep pass to keep the other teams defense from stacking the line!

I wouldn't mind! Whatever it takes to put more points on the board than the other team does is good with me!! Both Rudi and Perry get 1000+ yards? Hmmm. I like it! :player:

I don't care what anyone says, the possibilities we have with our WR's and our RB's makes our offense wicked hard to plan a defense against. Where do you start ?? How are you going to cover all of our WR's in a four WR set ?? (Deep, slant, who knows) Who's going to run the ball in a two back set ?? (Power, quickness, screen pass)...

God please let our Defense get better, please put the killer instrinct into them !!!

WHODEY !!!

I wouldn't say they failed greatly, they had the #1 rush attack last year

I'm having fantasies of 12-minute, 90-yard drives, alternating between Rudi and Perry, without a single pass thrown.

Great Pittsburgh-like mindset.

All Hail 5 pass a game Big Ben.
