The Reds are only 9 games away from reaching .500 again.

They're also only 9 games out of the Wild Card race!!!!

Okay...I have to ask, why has this transpired? Have the Reds improved, or have other teams gotten worse? I know the Reds just took a swing through baseballs worst division, the NL West. Let's see 'em do the same in Atlanta!

Both. The Reds have definitely improved, they have been dominating on the road recently, winning 10 out of their last 11. Certainly better than the 7-28 record they had on the road at one point. They've improved the pitching in all areas and are hitting with runners in scoring position. At the same time, the Cubs and Pirates have been playing badly, allowing the Reds to sneak into their current position.

JERRY NARRON and VERN! Since the Miley, Gullet firings, the Reds are 25-20. Need more, look at the pitching. The past 30 days, Ramon Ortiz is 3-2 with a 4.01 ERA, the relief pitching has allowed 2 walks in the past 42 innings (not researched, read in the Enquirer).

Is this all a Honeymoon? Well, check this out the bullpen has FIVE rookies with Homer Bailey who's killing the minor leagues with a 97 MPH fastball.

Then check this out via Cincy Enquirer:

The Reds' top 10 pitching prospects in alphabetical order:

RHP James Avery, 21: No. 5 pick in this year's draft. Is 0-1 with a 2.12 ERA at Rookie Billings.

RHP Homer Bailey, 19: Held his own competing in a league more geared toward 21-year-olds. Throws up to 97 mph and makes it look easy.

LHP Phil Dumatrait, 23: Came over in the Scott Williamson deal in 2003. Coming back from Tommy John surgery. His 3-11 record at Double-A Chattanooga is a result of the tandem approach. His 3.59 ERA is more indicative of how he has pitched.

RHP Justin Germano, 23: Obtained in the Joe Randa trade. Probably the closest to the big leagues. Is 8-7 with a 3.60 ERA at Triple-A Louisville.

RHP Rafael Gonzalez, 19: Fourth-round pick in last year's draft. Was overmatched at Dayton (3-5, 9.35 ERA) but has been good at Billings (3-0, 3.29).

LHP Tyler Pelland, 21: Throws up to 96 mph and he's left-handed. That's a good combination. Has struck out 85 in 841/3 innings at Sarasota. Obtained in the Scott Williamson trade in 2003.

RHP Elizardo Ramirez, 22: Pitched briefly with the Reds this season with mixed results. He's 7-4 with a 3.33 ERA at Louisville. Not overpowering - 123 hits and 67 strikeouts in 108 innings.

RHP Allan Simpson, 27: Numbers (3-4, 4.99 ERA) at Louisville aren't good, but his stuff is. Has struck out 71 in 521/3 innings. If he develops better control, he can help the big-league club.

LHP Phillipe Valiquette, 18: Has struggled to compete in his first year of pro ball. Went 2-5 with a 6.30 ERA at Dayton before being bumped down to Billings. He's 1-1 with a 10.03 ERA there.

LHP Travis Wood, 18: Throws 92 mph with a big-league changeup. Second-round pick in this year's draft.

The point? O'Briens method of rebuilding the farm will make this team great again!

Get on-board now because seats are filling fast. :D

That is some good stuff Kirk, especially with no mention of Howington, Gruler and Basham, or Josh Hall. If those guys ever get healthy, the ptiching depth in the minors may start to show up. We already know the Reds can hit and have young players capable of hitting, quality pitching=playoffs. Just ask Oakland

I'm fired up about this team. Hell, can we win 80 games this season? We'd have to go 26-19 -- very reachable -- but hell of alot better than I thought about a month ago.
